The largest bier garten in the world…read more.. While Hofbrau Haus gets all the attention in München, the Koniglicher Hirschgarten is a must stop when visiting, especially if staying on the West end... Known for its 8K seat wooded bier garten, KH is all things Bavarian. It's frequented by locals and some tourists, but English is still widely spoken. KH offers several types of local biers (the best being Augustiner, according to locals), a huge Bavarian menu (the food was good, but not great), and enough space where you don't feel crammed and your personal space violated. We visited on a Saturday night during Oktoberfest, and while it was busy, there were still tons of open seats. The cool thing about KH is they have a full-service seated area and also a self-serve area too where you can choose from different food and bier stand options. We elected for the full-service, which was good, but the server was a bit rushed based on it being an Oktoberfest Saturday night. All-in-all, great authentic Bavarian experience though. If you like the Oktoberfest vibes, but don't want to deal with the rowdiness and drunken debauchery, KH is the place to go when visiting Munchen.

My wife and I were in Munich, Germany for five days and my friend recommended this neighborhood…read morebeer garden. It was HUGE! My wife said they have the best pretzel she has ever had. The Germans eat pretzels like crazy. (They even put mayonnaise on their fries. Yucch.) My wife stood in line for about 30 minutes for a whole mackerel fish, I am glad she did, it was delisch! There are a few beer stands and they serve great Helles beer, I loved this place. There were at least two thousand people enjoying their friends and drinking beer at this beer garden. You have to go. We visited the concentration camp and it is a quick stop on the way back to the train station at Munich.

I found out about this cafe because a friend of mine lived upstairs. He's been bragging about this…read morecafe for days. Finally a sleepy Sunday rolls over and a visit seemed in order. I was jealous... ...from the moment I walked in. If I had this cafe below me, I'd be a happy camper (and perhaps a little rounder). Cafe Ruffini has two parts: it's split into a "take away" portion where you can point at a window and take cafe eats with you if you're on the go. OR you can grab a seat inside. I was here midday and it was packed! We had to wait around for a little bit. There was something for everyone whether you were sitting for a cappuccino & a cake or there for a whole meal. Upon entering, you'll see an enticing case of pastries. As a non-German speaker/ tourist, I was pretty reluctant to ask, but there was charming man, that spoke enough english to help me with my curious sweet tooth. I picked the walnut cake (see pic). It seemed like the popular thing. By the last bites of it, I saw 2-3 others had ordered the same. If you want to spruce up your normal coffee routine, get the amaretto latte. It's a bit sweet, but a treat to top off a meal along with that walnut cake. Ok...I think I've just convinced myself that I need to go back soon. Walnut cake + amaretto latte. One more thing, I think they screen films there at night and/or have live music too. This might be another excuse to go back. They have an extensive wine list available online. Too bad my friend moved back to Los Angeles. :(

One of my favourite cafes in Munich, run by a self-managed cooperative…read more The cakes are awesome, you can also buy them in their little store at the corner. Good wine selection and good food (organic if you care), in the summertime the rooftop terrace is usually open (self-service though, but very nice for sundowns or breakfast). Often quite full, especially on weekends - if you want to come with 4+ people better to reserve a table. Be aware though, that the many good reviews received by this place not necessarily mean that this is a perfect cafe. If you see it from the outside or take a quick first impression look inside you may wonder if this is the right place - I think the reviews just show that people like to hang out here, the atmosphere is nice despite the dated interior. :-)

California done better than California itself - in the heart of Munich. Visiting Munich - seeing…read morethis place as a breakfast choice was fun - and honestly I wasn't initially enamored as I expect something like this to be a caricature of the real thing maybe. But the menu felt unique and interesting enough to visit. I got the Apple Almond Affair - stacks of pancakes, roasted apples and almonds - interlaced with vanilla cream, whipped cream and a side of vanilla ice cream. The Palm Beach - a coconut infused chia pudding with fruit. And - the Hermosa Beach - hash browns topped with mushrooms, onions, egg, bacon and cheese. Additionally - coffee! I was very satisfied with all the flavors - as I mentioned - better than California actually offers. The apple pancake dish was decadent but not over the top intensely rich as one may expect it to be. The hash brown dish was super flavorful and pleasantly presented, with fried eggs perfectly adorning the stack. And the chia pudding was also delicious (covered in bananas - which I removed for myself but were eaten by my companion). Currents and other fruit was atop this dish - a lovely flavorful pudding. Service was outstanding, welcoming. Seating - busy morning but no real wait. Cash only on this day due to network issues but that was ok. Just a very inviting space with lovely people and uniquely outstanding food. Must visit in Munich no matter where you are from!

We ended up at California Bean since it was one of the few places open on the Assumption of Mary…read moreholiday. It's very interesting/confusing to see other Californians review this place AND say that it is authentic to their experience going to a diner back home. Our table ordered omelettes with toast, OJ, and coffee. While the latter were fine, I take issue with the main dish. Every diner I've been to back home has Heinz ketchup and perhaps a hot sauce like Tabasco or Cholula. Every other table in sight also lacked these items, which definitely made my meal less enjoyable. We need seasoning beyond salt and pepper if we are going to call this place California-inspired. Service-wise....it's Germany, not California. Leave your expectations for cheerful and attentive service back home. It ain't happening here. Lastly, cash only? Even cash only joints here tend to post a sign somewhere to alert you in case you don't know. We found ourselves scrambling due to this policy. Ambiance and decor was boring and I have definitely seen something like this in California. SKIP California bean (unless you're in a bind like we were)
