After receiving a bid for $550 to soft wash moss from my garage roof and one side of my house, I did a little digging. Soft wash means spraying a chemical on the roof using a sprayer and a hose. There is no scrubbing or removal. The spray kills the moss without scrubbing. Dead moss slides off the roof in a week or two on its own. Given the size of my job, it would be impossible to spend more than a half hour wetting the roof with spray. The chemical can be bought at Home Depot for $23.80. It's called Moss Out! One 6lb. box covers 6,000 sq ft. A sprayer can be bought for under $20. If you want to go into business doing this, a professional grade sprayer is $99.
I declined All Washed Up's offer. After buying a box of Moss Out! for $25, the remaining $525 would have gone to a half hour of labor--a rate of $1,050 an hour. At $1.050 an hour, I would have paid three times more for spraying than I would have for open heart surgery.
At 73, I still have a pretty good head on my shoulders. If you do too, I suggest that you do a little research and determine for yourself whether the price is justifiable. I believe in paying good money for good service. At the same time, no one can expect a thousand dollars to fix a flat tire. Prices do need to reflect reality. read more
