They recently had a beer tasting after the Sunday 5:30 mass, which is excellent. They also have things like spaghetti dinners and theology on tap etc. They have a new deacon that is spearheading reaching out to boston college and community of st. ignatius. I think he's doing very well! I haven't attended the 11am mass, but I've gone many times to the 5:30pm mass. At this mass, the priests and deacons give good sermons, and people attending mass respond and are friendly. They open with greeting people and end with a good song. The music is very good -- they have about a 10 person choir and guitar, piano, harmonica etc. They sometimes have a choir leader with a guitar that looks like a spanish parlour guitar -- the music he leads/sings is really great. By far, after trying so many zombie-Catholic churches in the Boston area -- with people that aren't friendly and don't speak responses in church and priests that are "difficult to appreciate" as my refined southern mother says -- this church is one of the best if you're looking for catholic and community.

This Episcopalian church is an American architectural gem and National Historical Landmark. You have to pay a $10 entrance fee to view the interior, but it's worth the expense if you enjoy history, art, or architecture. Alternatively, you can skip the interior and visit the Boston Public Library instead (which has no admission fee). Completed in 1877, Trinity Church is an architectural masterpiece of Henry Richardson who pioneered the "Richardsonian Romanesque" style of clay tile roofs, colorful interiors, and stone-faced exteriors with arches. You can see examples of this building design in Minneapolis, Detroit, Chicago, and Albany, NY. The interior has magnificent stained glass windows and a unique colorful design. One interesting fact from the Self-Guided tour booklet is that Boston's Back Bay was originally a tidal mud flat. So the heavy stone of Trinity Church rests on 4,500 wooden piles, which were pounded through 30 feet of gravel fill, silt, and clay.

When last in Boston, there were renovations being done to the interior. There were no tours or services at the time, but there were windows made available to look in and get a glimpse. I am afraid that during the service, I could not help but take in every detail of the interior. Of course, I didn't feel like I should take any photos at that time (my next visit). This is the national headquarters of my favorite holy order in the Catholic Church, The Oblates of the Virgin Mary (OMV). They have a strong devotion to the exposition of the Holy Eucharist. For those of you that don't know what that means it's when literally a communion wafer is enshrined in something called a monstrance and it is set on the alter and the faithful adore it with song, prayer, or mostly just silence and reverence. Perpetual adoration takes place here, I believe, meaning the Host is always exposed (except during the sacrifice of the mass). For people into Ignatian Catholic meditation it's a great place to do your daily holy hour. Since I'm from California this place looks like Sleeping Beauty's Castle but I'm sure even to someone used to beautiful old buildings this structure is exceptional. The seminary where the Oblates get their remarkable devout formation is next door so this place should be on your list of "must sees" for Boston if you are a Catholic, or interested in what makes Catholics tick.
