I had a very strange experience with Marcelo Botelho at All Pro Painting. After having 2 ice dams fixed and the ceilings in those two rooms, repaired and touched up, we wanted a second coat of paint to even things out. I have a painter whom I love, but he was busy for the next couple of weeks and my husband was itching to have the work completed quickly. I contacted Marcelo through Facebook messenger as he has a very strong social media presence and I'd seen him post 'before and after' shots of jobs he'd done in the area. I like to try and give business to local companies and after checking out his positive reviews, I messaged him regarding the ceilings. Without seeing them, he quoted a price that was literally double what we were quoted from our usual painters. I thanked him for the quote but stated I wouldn't be using him (although I didn't mention that it was because his quote was so unreasonable) and he wrote back, dropping the cost significantly and stated he could be there the next morning (Monday). Bidding without seeing the job and then dropping the price so drastically should have been my first red flag. The job was still $160 above my usual painter's quote but having it done quickly was worth it to us. His workers (Daniel and Kidu (sp?) showed up on time and completed the job in 3 hours. (The stars are for them). We had some larger jobs we wanted quoted, one being the interior of our garage, and later that day, Marcelo quoted us $699 for the job (competitive with the one our painter gave us and based on what his painters saw when they were working at our home) so we agreed and he stated his painters would be back 8:00 am the next morning (Tuesday). My husband moved everything out of the garage and in to the driveway but no one showed up that morning. After waiting 45 minutes, I texted Marcelo to find out where the painters were and he told me that his painter stated it was raining (it wasn't, nor did it rain until that evening) so he couldn't do the job that day but would come back the next morning (Wednesday). My husband then moved the contents of the garage in to our foyer. Needless to say, 14 minutes before the scheduled arrival time on Wednesday, I received a text from Marcelo stating his workers would not be there that day but could come on Friday or Saturday that week. I told him I'd have to keep him posted (as we were expecting company for the weekend). My poor husband....he moved everything back to the garage again. The next day (Thursday), I contacted him to let him know that our weekend plans fell through and if he could still come Friday or Saturday, that would be great. He stated Saturday would work....and then sent an additional text, increasing the price of his original bid by 11.52%. Now mind you, we had insulation blown in from Mass Save earlier in the month and the original quote included some sanding at the spots where holes had to be made and patched, and in my prior communication, I let him know that my husband had done all of the sanding so that all we'd need was the painting (less work than he bid on) and I did not haggle with the original price...I never questioned him about the $699 we agreed to. I was just happy the job was going to get done quickly. Somehow though, even with less work needed than he quoted for originally, the price mysteriously went up to $790. When I questioned him about it, his response was "it's a lot of work".
I was so disappointed. Both my husband and I are in Real Estate for over 20 years and my brother renovates homes in Brookline and Needham. We've given our HVAC person, Tile person, Painter (whom I reviewed here years ago) Roofer, Contractor, Electrician, etc....so many referrals, that they've discounted work we've needed done (without our asking). I take great pride in the people I refer which is why I am writing this review. I could not in good conscience, recommend All Pro after seeing their dishonorable business practice. If I ran by business this way, I wouldn't have any business. I assume the run-around was because he lined up larger jobs since I saw him posting on Facebook with more 'before and after' photos. I never put my bigger jobs above my smaller ones once I've commited myself. Commitment, communication and honesty are things I value above all else.
As a side note, although our original painters stated they could come within the next 2 weeks, and a third painter who had given us a competitive quote, stated he'd feel more comfortable doing the job once the outside temperatures reached 60 degrees (with the way this spring is going, that could have been June), my husband became so frustrated, he decided to do the job himself. Luckily for me, he is meticulous and by the end of the weekend, the garage was painted (which included the floor which we had not intended to do originally) and as of this evening (Monday...one week since this whole mess started) everything is now back in its proper place...and it looks fantastic! read more
