Drost Park aka "Dead Children's Playground"…read more I watched an episode of a paranormal show once and this location piqued my curiosity. I googled to see its location and we included it in our itinerary when we visited the South. The area is somewhat hidden and if you're not looking for it you won't be able to find it. We drove past an old cemetery to get to the area and the first thing we noticed is a covered section with picnic benches... like a picnic area. The playground area is in a little cove, not very deep, just slightly below, and there are steps to take you down. The locals call it Dead Children's Playground. There are rumors of the playground being home to spirits, dead children spirits. It's been investigated by many paranormal groups, from amateurs to pros. I can't remember the show I saw this episode from but if you search YouTube for "dead children's playground" you'll find other people's video clips and "investigations" posted on there. Supposedly, (from the paranormal show and internet stories) that in 1960's, a series of child disappearances cases were reported in Huntsville. With none of them turning up, it was suspected that an unknown person from the neighborhood killed the children. According to the local legend the spirits of children buried in the cemetery come out late at night to play on the playground. Swings move on their own, ghostly figures are seen on the equipment, and disembodied voices, laughter, and screams can be heard. They're especially very active between 10p to 3a which was well past most kids' bedtimes. Is it haunted?? The verdict: So far, I have not been able to document or find any proof that there is activity in the playground because none of the children came out to play with me. I'm sure Ryan M (San Antonio TX) can! Still fun to visit, though. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Happy "ghost" haunting! Review #1859

Place to picnic and the kids to play, not really in the cemetery. Fun little stop and the cemetery in spring is lovely. A fun geocache isn't far away.

I was really impressed by the Athen's Sportsplex! It's really sizeable, ya'll. We visited the All Kids Park which is onsite at the Sportsplex last Sunday which was really nice, too. Back to Sportsplex. I did not enter the building itself; however from the exterior it was really modern looking and nice! I think it houses the swimming pool(s) which I am told are really nice, too! I explored the numerous batting cages trying to figure out how they worked because they aren't the typical ones where you put $ in and a machine delivers the pitch to you - they were *not* automated. Hmmmm. How the heck do they work? They were in nice shape, though. Also, their tennis courts were in excellent shape! Lighted, wind screens/covered changeover areas and nets, all in great shape, with excellent signage and no pits/ruts on the hard surfaced courts. They have 2 baseball fields; 3 baseball/softball fields, 3 soccer fields; an 18 hold disc golf course (which I did not see), I did see a plain ole wide open field where parents and children were just throwing balls and playing. Ball fields and soccer fields are available for rent by the public and for tournaments. Their website indicates they have 2 sub facilities: an Athens Greenway Trail and Athens Sportsplex Track; which I didn't see. Per the website the Athens Sportsplex Track is a 1.2 mile track that connects the Sportsplex to Lowes on Hwy. 72 in Athens, it is "mostly shaded" and appears to have a really cool looking covered bridge, too.

Brahan Spring Park has been here forever, ya'll. Since the 70s at least. It used to be home to the…read moreHuntsville Tennis Center, which the city moved to Airport Road - it was city owned and operated and public. They replaced the tennis courts with sand volleyball courts. The Park has the 2nd oldest disc golf course. It has at least 1 18-hole disc golf course in super-tall pine trees on the east side. You can fish here. The water features are on the south and north sides of Drake Avenue. People catch big mouth bass and catfish here. They have vending machines where you can buy food for the fish, ducks, and geese. There's a free splashpad here, and I think it's on astroturf that's open from Open Memorial Day - Labor Day, every day from 10:00AM to dusk. It closes very Tuesday at 5:30 PM and reopens on Wednesday morning at 11:00 AM to allow for maintenance. There's not a lot of shade near the splashpad, so you may want to bring an umbrella or some type of covering to get some relief in the hot summer months. I can't think of many restaurant options in the immediate area, except for the McDonald's which is just east of the park, the food court at Parkway Place Mall, the City Cafe Diner east of the park on Drake, a walk-up Taqueria El Cazador at Drake, and Triana and another Mexican place closer to the park on Drake. In other words, pack a lunch to enjoy! Covered pavilions are available to rent for events such as parties and reunions. We grew up playing ball in the ball fields at Brahan Spring. It looks like they offer flag football, soccer, and softball and baseball now. Personally, I would limit my visits to daytime/morning hours if I were taking children to this park. Also, the restrooms aren't very convenient to the splash pads and are often locked.

Quick Take: Playground was nice, lots of places to play. Easy to find off Memorial…read more Review: Playground was really great and a very good size. Lots of swings and such. I would take my kids back. Area seemed okay in terms of safety but I'd only go during the daytime!
