I hadn't been to a haunted house (or town/forest in this case) in years when I was invited to experience terror town. I was encouraged to purchase a yellow (no touching allowed) bracelet and after experiencing terror town I wish I would have braved the red bracelet! Terror Town was such a unique experience for me! I really enjoyed that you are able to have an immersive experience or just eat and drink while you wait to enter the haunted forest instead of waiting in a long line like most other haunted houses. The town was ultimately my favorite part as opposed to the actual forest. I enjoyed seeing the theatrics of the cast members and the public humiliation of people who dared purchase the red bracelets all while drinking a beer and shopping at the gift shops. There is action galore! Can't wait to come back!

This place is beyond amazing! Most complaints seem to come from folks who didn't read the millions of posted "RED BRACELET WILL GET YOU DIRTY AND MESSY!!" almost like the owners should make you do a red bracelet recital "with this red bracelet I understand that I will be touched, drug off, possibly forced to my knees, and covered in blood. I also understand that this isn't WWE smackdown and I will not try to fight the actors." The intention of the red bracelet is clear as day and some of you guys ruined your own time by getting the red bracelet that you were not prepared for. That's on you. Also! The vendors are amazing! Most everything is handmade in the town! There's handmade brooms, ring games, chocolate, kettle corn, photo jewelry, real bone art, even somebody doing forging, handmade teddy bears, lots and lots of food vendors! You would almost have to try to have a bad time here there's so much to do! The owners and staff are beyond helpful and beyond reasonable in getting any issues that you have resolved!

Super scary, well done. Loved the kettle corn and Gatling gun. Will definitely make this an annual tradition.

I first heard of this…read morefest through Family Friendly Cincinnati, which is a great resource for things to do with the kids. The fest remains open weekends through October 6th. We arrived just before noon and found that we weren't the only ones with the idea for the day. Fortunately I had enough cash to skip the credit card line for entry payment, and we were inside the gates in no time. Admission is $12 for adults, children ages 6-12: $6, and children under 5 are free. We were treated to a gunfight right away upon our entry. It reminded me a lot of the shootout we witnessed as part of our Great Train Robbery experience last year. In fact, I'm pretty sure most of the actors from the train ride were participating at the Old West Fest. Our two-year-old though it was too loud this time, so we moved along right away. The town buildings are very cool to look at and each one has a real purpose inside. Some sell arts and crafts, while others serve as a saloon for drinks and food. There were numerous activities for the young ones, including a sing along band performance, a really impressive magic show, panning for gold, and the always exciting play-set with slides and swings. We were most entertained by the Pickled Brothers Circus, who we caught on our way out. The combination of fire eating, juggling, and sword swallowing was enjoyed by the whole family. This past weekend was Native American weekend and we witnessed a drum circle performance. Each weekend has its own unique theme, so some specials acts and exhibits can be expected at other times. We all had a good time at the festival, even though my wife and I thought it was a little expensive. Mainly the food and drinks were not as cheap as I was expecting, and there were a handful of children's activities that all cost extra as well. I did see people bringing their own coolers with them, so that could be one way to cut down the cost, though I don't see it mentioned specifically on their website. It is probably best for families with older children.

Had a great afternoon at The Old West Fest. Admission was reasonable for the attractions as were…read morethe food and drink options throughout the town. I would recommend getting the kids wristbands so all the premium activities can be enjoyed in an unlimited fashion. Looking forward to running it back again next year!

Weekend lodging costs $75+ vs the weekday. Especially considering that it is... - Dirty. It's old and it shows. Built in early 2000s and the last renovation was 2013. The room was spotless, but you can smell the mildew. Carpet + waterpark. Good thing we had a balcony, so we could air it out. The water park itself is filthy. They took the MRSA scare from years ago seriously by just adding more chlorine. The chlorine fumes in the wave pool burned my eyes before the water got to my knees. That, plus the water flow, has eaten the concrete of the lazy river. The smooth concrete ends at the waterline, both my husband and I skinned our knees. The water is never changed, only recycled. It all has a brown tenge to it. Many of the large tube slides have dark streaks on them, originating from the water spigots. It just highlighted the obvious priority, as most hotels have, money vs customer health. Can't close shop for a weekend to power wash or to change the water seasonally. These, plus my 9 yr old child could not play with her dolls nor wear her mermaid tail in the shallow end of the baby pool, are the reasons we won't be staying or visiting here again. I do understand the possible dangers with both (toys and a tail in water) and life guards were polite about it, but we have done both in a public pools for considerably less money.

For the most part their staff is personable but they were a hot mess with organization,…read morecommunication and check out processes. We were incorrectly charged over and over again. I waited an hour plus to get it fixed and checked out and the next day - another charge hit. How many people are they charging extra? I bet it's more than we suspect. Slides are fun but I'd take a pass on this place. Cant even get ahold of mgr to dispute sketchy transactions.

The Beast - Waiting for The Beast at night

The Beast

On this National Roller Coaster Day, I pay tribute to The Beast at Kings Island. It is…read moreacknowledged by roller coaster experts as one of the greatest wooden roller coasters ever built. When it debuted in 1979, it was the biggest, baddest, fastest, longest, highest steepest roller coaster in the world. It continues to hold the record as the longest wooden roller coaster in the world. I was fortunate to ride the Beast my first time when it was unleashed to the public for its first day on April 14, 1979. I remember waiting three hours in a queue line. During its first season of operations, it was not unusual for the line to be 3 or more hours, especially on the weekends. Crazy! but people had no problem back then waiting for hours to ride the best roller coaster in the world. On its first day I knew a way to get in front of the line by accessing the park's backlots. I was a Kings Island employee working in Ride Operations and took the day off so I could ride the Beast. Since that first day, I estimate I have ridden the Beast over 700 times during my lifetime. So many great memories! Riding with my parents' numerous times, all my friends, fellow coaster geeks, co-workers (like Scot Lahrmer and Steve Gayfield), and then later in life when our family of seven lived in Mason for 11-years. My best memories are taking my wife and five children for their first time. And then numerous times since then as they grew up. The first ride on the Beast became a rite of passage for each member of my family. It was in our blood to ride and always ride the Beast. We had to pay our second son, Taylor, $20 to ride when he finally became tall enough- yes, basically a bribe. He was apprehensive but he loved it. And like his parents and siblings, he now makes sure he can ride it whenever possible. We don't get to ride it as often now that we moved to Minnesota, but we still find a way to make it part of our summers. Every ride of the Beast from the first has always been an awesome experience- especially those night rides. I remember when working at KI we got the benefit to ride the Beast after the park closed into the night. I got to ride it after midnight one night for two consecutive rides in the front seat. Now, that is a memory you don't forget. And without the seat belts, restraints, and padding. Those were the best days to ride the Beast. The Beast milestones- 1. taking my wife on it for her first time in 1992 soon after we were married. Of course, she had to love roller coasters to make a marriage proposal. 2. We then made constant visits to Kings Island with all five of our children to ride the Beast when they became tall enough. 3. While working for the City of Mason, we had employee retreats at Kings Island to ride the coasters. 4. I got to ride in the front seat on my 50th and 60th Birthdays. The Beast will always have a place in our hearts and minds. We really loved riding it this year after Kings Island reconstructed the track to make it so smooth. May the Beast live on forever.

Mayslick Asparagus Festival

Mayslick Asparagus Festival

This one day festival is set in the charming town of Mayslick, Kentucky, in between Maysville and…read moreParis, on Hwy 68 South. The festival celebrates all things Asparagus, since the climate and soil in this region of Kentucky is perfect for growing the vegetable beginning at 9:30 am and going until 10:00 in the evening. The town of Mayslick is lovely--a very old town, founded in 1788, but now, a sleepy little southern town, full of good people, a few antique shops, and home to the first consolidated negro school in Kentucky, begun in 1921 and closing in the early 1960's with integration, which has been lovingly restored over the years by the town and many of the alumni. The festival centers on the main street, which is closed to any car traffic. There are several vendors, one of my favorite being Homestead Greenhouses, an Amish greenhouse that offers heirloom varieties of tomatoes, fresh strawberries, Amish fried pies (cherry is the bomb!) and perennial selections that are a fraction of the cost you would spend at a local greenhouse. There is a very large Amish and Mennonite settlement that lies in the outskirts of Mayslick. Another favorite is Sunflower Sundries, from Mt. Olivet, from whom I've been buying soaps and whole grain mustards and elderberry jams from for YEARS. Jennifer Gleason, the proprietess of Sunflower Sundries is on the festival board and really loves to make the experience unique each and every year. Each year, there seems to be different vendors, so if you see something you want, get it or get a business card because they likely won't be back the next season! I was introduced to Cincinnati's Grateful Grahams at this festival, a totally delicious vegan graham crackers made in small batches by a gal here in Cincy, that I now have delivered in my Green Bean Delivery box each week, and I've gotten beautiful handmade pottery, hand made upcycled children's clothing from a woman in Frankfort, even tupperware. You just never know, so do bring some cash! The food vendors are fantastic--local pork and beef farms, and of course, ASPARAGUS!!! A variety of enticing offerings from grilled or fried asparagus and the "tasting room" sponsored by the festival has all things asparagus on the menu, including ice cream, soup, quiches, etc. Whatever your little veggie loving heart desires, all served up by some of the most welcoming folks I've ever met. Don't forget to hit Flat Fork Pork for their pulled pork sandwich, one of the best pork bbq's I've had in sometime. There is an annual art show, housed in a gorgeous old church in the center of town (you can't miss it!) has entries from local artists that depict Asparagus in all mediums, some works are for purchase, others not, and there is a voting booth where you can submit your choice for the festival favorite. Two bandstands and a variety of musicians performing--sometimes it's gospel, sometimes it's covers of country and rock tunes, but I've been lucky enough each year to stick around for Karly Dawn Higgins & Sarah Wood, two instructors from the Cowan Creek Mountain School of Music who are ultra talented gals playing original mountain tunes and they really make the festival even more special for me. You can take a tractor ride to the Burwall Farm where you can pick your own asparagus, meet the new baby chicks and experience an informative Q & A with the farm's owner, talk with the extension service about local asparagus, sample recipes and give your thumbs up or "nay". Remember, it's only held one day, on the 3rd Saturday of May, so make your plans for 2013!
