Doh. What bugged me even more is that I couldn't fix it myself and I'm normally quite good at this sort of thing. I took it in, picked it up a day or so later and when I got it home, it worked. I am certain that somewhere obvious inside the case there is a huge reset button labelled, "press here if you are an idiot", but I was too incompetent to find it and so suffered the ignominy of having to explain what I had done. I think the £100 I was charged were really punitive damages rather than the cost of repairs. They wouldn't tell me what they did to fix it, so I think that it probably actually took slightly under 2 minutes to open the case and slightly under 2 seconds to apply the fix. The people are friendly, my only beef is that on return, the case thumb screws had been replaced with regular slot screws. If they need to open the hood on a PC or laptop, they will charge you £70 for a diagnosis regardless of whether it can be fixed or not. If work is required you will be charged for parts and labour on top of that. They specialise in fixing Shuttle PCs here as well as laptops, but I'm sure they could sort out your desktop woes as well. All over, I have no real issue with this place and would use it again if necessary.

Any pc repair has a minimum cost no matter where you go due to labor and overhead. This place seemed like it was on the lower price range after calling a few places in downtown and didn't push useless services - definitely a far cry from the atrocity that is Geek Squad or whatever the equivalent is in the UK.

These guys at Laptop Repair fixed it no problem and said the US guys actually made the problem worse. Anyway I can't recommend these chaps enough for a fixed fee, no fix no fee repair. You can't go wrong. I would never buy another Sony, their customer service is absolutely the worst I have every used and they wanted $600 to repair it without even looking at it. The lady on the phone said that my laptop would be checked while I wait and I'd be given a quote. When I arrive, early morning, I find out that I had to leave my precious laptop because James doesn't arrive before 11am. I decide not to and go back from I came from, on the other side of London, on the Tube. At 11am I come back and meet James, who examines my laptop in front of me and gives me a £75 quote for cleaning the fan, saying that if the fan needs to be replaced he won't be able to do so because he doesn't have the fan replacement part. Since I have already spent my morning in the Tube, going back and forth from Sloane Square, he kindly offers me to do it straight away, while I wait, in order to avoid me a 3rd trip there to collect the laptop the next day. After 45 minutes and he comes out with my laptop fixed. The repair has a 3 month guaranty and, in addition to this, he says that if my laptop dies within 2 weeks time I'll get a full refund of the £75 paid for fixing it. This was a month ago and my laptop is still working. Hope it lasts. I decided to post here because when I found this company online, while I was still in Val d'Isere, I was happy to find Tony S. review here, which gave me some hope that my laptop could be fixed, when back in London. Because when I had driven down from Val d'Isere to Bourg St Maurice in the valley, Christophe from JBSoft, had charged me €24 just to tell me that he couldn't fix it. Update 9 Dec 15 My laptop failed just 1 week after the 3 months guaranty. My luck :-( I went back there to see James who tried to find a fan online to replace the one in my Vaio but could not find any. He then offered me to clean the fan again for £40 without guaranty but I decided not to. He kindly gave me some advice for buying a new laptop other than Vaio, since Sony stopped making them.

They have NEVER charged for advice or answering my home network questions. They were able to clean up the drive, remove all the viruses (even though we were running Norton all the time), and re-install all the software quickly for a very nominal price that will allow us to keep using the machine indefinitely.
