Specialties
My training services teaches owners how to use positive reinforcement techniques like shaping and capturing to develop skills in your dog or puppy. I will also teach you to distinguish between your dog's needs & wants. You can have a well behaved, grounded puppy who uses self control, and exhibits good behaviors naturally. Learning these behaviors early on, means your dog will have these skills their whole life, and will enjoy a happier life because of it.
I teach owners protocols that are easy to apply every day. Ask me how to extinguish unwanted behaviors too. Dog training is about giving your dog a choice! Making a good choice is rewarding; make an incorrect choice, good stuff doesn't happen. My work is now based in California, so training sessions for clients in the UK & the rest of the world will be via Zoom. Since your puppy and dog are happies at home, where your dog is most comfortable. Once your dog masters behaviors at home, then start training them in environments with more distractions, making the learning more challenging.
Potty training, puppy biting and being well behaved through self control, are some of the behaviors to start training immediately your dog gets to their new home. There are some things you can do ahead of their arrival! Our puppy's vital imprinting time (getting to know patterns, things, places & people) ends at around 14-16 weeks. There's tons you can do in this short time to set your puppy up for success.
History
Established in 2002.
For 15 years Penny Locke has trained dog owners and guardians, how to understanding their needs, how to clearly communicate with them, and how to 'read' them.
Thanks to her own dog, Jordan, who had behavioral issues, Penny sought the help of experts, who introduced the world of dog training & behavioral science to her. Penny then read furiously, attended workshops, dog training conferences & volunteered at local shelters to be able to learn more. Penny also visited Yellowstone National Park to study wolves, dog's distant relatives, in their natural habitat.
Penny started her practice helping friends, neighbors, anyone who needed help with their dog. She has helped many different breeds, sizes & ages of dogs who displayed varied unwanted behaviors from not listening & poor recall, to biting, pulling on a leash, & fear-driven behaviors like lunging & barking.
Penny has spent the last 2 years in the UK continuing her practice and learning more from 'British' dogs!
Meet the Business Owner: Penny L.
I am excited to teach you about the amazing language of dogs. Learning this language is essential to living in harmony with our faithful companions, and to help them reach their potential. Our dog's language is global.
After 20+ years as a travel agent, we adopted our first dog, Jordan, from Golden Gate Labrador Rescue. Jordan was a sweet, gentle, 2-year-old yellow Labrador. He became my constant companion. But, while he excelled in obedience classes, he barked fiercely when people came to our front door. Nothing we did deterred him. In an effort to help, my father sent me a copy of "The Dog Listener" by UK-based dog behavior specialist, Jan Fennell. Reading Jan's book opened my eyes to understanding Jordan's key needs. I continued my education (& still do) by learning from experts such as Trish King, Ian Dunbar, Turid Rugaas, Nicole Wilde, Patricia McConnell & Jean Donaldson. I attend dog training workshops, webinars & read avidly. I also learn from every dog I come in contact with.
