It wasn't until around 9-10pm when two more parties walked in. We ordered the calamari and a salad to start. Salad was decent, very average. Calamari as well, nothing special about it and nothing horrible either. The main entree, since the whole menu was in Spanish, we just went with whatever seemed like it would be good (google translation helps a little). The head chef came out to talk to us in amateur sign language and Spanish, we would respond in English and smiles. This is where I'm at a loss for words for the food that was served that night. It was basically a very very flat piece of jamón, layered with (mozzarella ?) cheese and more jamón and more cheese and all of this is battered and fried on both sides. I know it may sound good but it was nothing like that. I could barely finish a third of one piece. For the remainder of dinner, we just played how-to-hide-the-meat. Would not return to here ever! Staff and chef were all very nice people though, came to check on us multiple times through out dinner to make sure everything was okay.

My wife & I shared the artichoke confit plus she had the guacamole salad while I had the pasta puttanesca con gambas since I was curious what the Spanish take on this classic dish would be. We both liked the artichoke dish which had tasty crispy ham bits. Wife said she likes the guac salad. Pasta puttanesca was too sweet, I felt but not disastrously so.

Loved the Tierra Astur experience in downtown Oviedo! Met some friends from San Diego that are…read morenatives from that town and are visiting their families over the holidays. This was a gathering spot for some of them and their friends so my friend and I tagged along and I tried their sidra. It is not my favorite drink but I loved the 'escanciado' or the art of pouring the cider in the glass from an elevated position. Tierra Astur is a blend of store with lots of gastronomy products (perfect for gifts and excellent packaging), a restaurant to eat a LOT (better share those huge dishes) and a bar where to have a drink standing still whole the waiters pass croquetas and tortilla de patatas at no cost. The space is gorgeous, lovely decor, huge yet cozy. Outside they have a map with the most famous products and areas of origin, so it is a pretty didactic experience too.

Locals told me one can eat well here. We ate outside in covered patio, good breeze, pleasant. We had the mixed salad, the ensaladilla rusa, and the pollo al ajillo. The salad was fine, the ensaladilla rusa is said to be homemade (and appears to be), very tasty, and the chicken is crunchy and garlicky. We looked around at other spots and they are for tourists and we found sketchy service/unfriendly service or were denied seating. Coffee is really good here too!
