Can't complain about a FREE concert at Golden Gate Park! Come early to get the seating of your choice... on the grass of course. Bring plenty of sunblock, blankets to sit on food and friends! And dogs are welcome! Parachute, Sugar Ray, Matt Nathanson, and Gavin Rossdale were the performers this year and they were great! See you next year!

As everyone else states, "Get here early!" My girlfriend was able to score four VIP tickets to Alice's Summerthing 2014. On the tickets it states that they recommend parking in St Mary's Hospital's parking lot. So I get there 'round 1015 and notice a sign that says "No Event Parking." I drive on a little and rethink the parking (mind you, still in the middle of the street). I back up a few feet and pull into the driveway. At that moment there wasn't any security so I park and start my walk up to street level since I have absolutely no service on my cell phone and as I'm walking out, a car of four young girls pull up and a security guy asks them what they were there for. They dropped the bomb saying for Alice's Summerthing and the security guard was like NOPE! I'm walking away like... Holy shit! I'm lucky I got here early. I call my girlfriend and tell her what was going on at the parking garage... So she pulls in, gives the guard some bogus story of meeting her grandma or some shit and he allows her to park. I'm hiding behind a pillar and she's walking towards the main entrance to make her story believable and we're looking at each other like... How the fuck do we get outta here?!! We managed to sneak out (crisis averted) and were on our way to the park. Park was FILLED with people waiting inline to get in. We waited near the entrance for my friend's sister and her +1 and we noticed people cutting the line like it was nothing and getting in faster (wish I had balls to pull that shit off). Upon entrance, security checked all bags made people either finish their opened drinks or throw them away. I guess the rules were no food or drinks that are opened. However, if the containers or bags were still sealed, you were good to go. People brought their dogs and blankets. By the time the concert was about to starts, the hill if fucking full of people and more crammed up front. VIP had a little seating area with free food and drinks, so we rarely left the area. I noticed homeless people walking around trying to sell some shit and nearly harassing some young girl to buy ear rings, so be careful. OMG OMG OMG... There was this cop (pls don't tell my fiance)... FUCKING HOT. Tall, tanned, built... Oh My GOD!! All the woman was drooling over him (including me!) I tell you... I'd break every law for that man to shake me down... HAHA! So anyway, concert was a success. Wish they were more organized with parking... LOVED THE HOT COP. Oh yea... and the free music.

THE CONCERT WAS GREAT!!! I was pleasantly surprised with Kris Allen and how good he performed live... so much energy and what a voice for such a little dude... he also signed our Alice' Summerthing poster..... Any bids on this (+_~) Lifehous was great... I was hoping they'd play "Breathing", an old song ..... The only complaint is the Alice' staffs and security people who were blatantly rude and down-right authoritative... especially toward folks who are near by the vip lounge...... they kept shooing people out like sheep herding when they walked pass the barricage or stood too close to the barricage.... they were blocking so people wouldn't enter the vip area... I understand u have to do your job but u didn't have to be so nasty about it ...and yeahh... have you heard of of proper signage? They looked as if they're too good to be there...

I have no complaints about Alice's Summerthing- I had a great time and thought it was great! We got there just after 1 p.m. and saw the tail end of Parachute perform, following them was Sugar Ray who was fantastic, what a crowd pleaser. The sun was shining and everyone there seemed to be in a great mood, enjoying the music. After Sugar Ray we had a lovely performance from Mathew and then Gavin- super! We brought a picnic lunch and a few beers, sat on our little "square" and left all of our cares at home. We stayed until the very last song- it was completely worth it- ha, it was FREE! I will surely be back next year- my suggestion to you all- take the bus!

It's fair to say that Marin is no hotbed of nightlife but lately, the rain and early sunsets have…read moreme nesting a bit more than in past years. It's in the midst of this nesting that I've discovered the joys of what the Throckmorton Theatre is laying down. The free, monthly noontime concerts are great as is the always popular weekly comedy night but more recently I've been enjoying the other events offered. In so doing I've come to see the Throckmorton as an essential community asset; they save me a drive to the City while providing right-sized entertainment close to home. When I attend events here I leave feeling thankful for their offerings. In recent months I've enjoyed a Jonathan Richman concert (fab... bring him back!), a concert by a local band, and A Chorus Line, teen edition. That last one left me sorry that I'd missed the previous one-time Broadway shows showcased here and with resolve not to miss another. For a little above the cost of your ticket you can pay to enjoy reserved seats but if you fail to do that you'll find equally satisfying seating on the main floor (they also have balcony seating) if you arrive early enough to snag it. I find myself checking the Throckmorton's calendar with a frequency, these days, that I'd not have anticipated even one year earlier. They've not disappointed yet.

And the interior of the performance hall is exquisite with such detailed woodwork, gorgeous light fixtures and murals. We attended a free musical concert with an outstanding local violinist who featured art on the screen to accompany the music he played. I've honestly not heard a violin played with such versatility. What a treat this show and venue was!

-----Adding to address Annie's comment below: Annie - if…read moreindeed you want to apply consistency across all performers, then when we fly in for the performance on Sunday we will join the show just like a number of other caucasian ensemble performers who had lower attendance and are still being allowed on stage. I plan to have my video on, so will record any interactions in which we're stopped from going on stage, and point to the caucasian students who have missed tech rehearsals this week yet still being allowed on stage. If paam is keeping our money, then we are performing on Sunday. Paam can also issue a refund and we'll be happy to go separate ways. But Paam does not get to take all our money and disallow us to be on stage yet allow others to be on stage who have lower attendance than our kids. Appreciate you doing the right thing. -----Original post: Our experience with the Performing Arts Academy of Marin (PAAM) has been deeply disappointing -- both in terms of fairness and the overall learning outcomes. The program feels heavily commercialized, prioritizing revenue over education or student experience. Tuition is extremely high for what ultimately amounts to very limited technical instruction, the pressure of buying vanity products aimed at parents who think their kids a star is everywhere, and the refund/credit policies are rigid to the point of being unreasonable. I've never written about race or discrimination in a review before, but I feel obligated to address it here because it has affected my daughters repeatedly. In the lyrical squad, choreography has been super simple and non-technical, yet cast placements have shown a clear pattern: the same Caucasian dancers are routinely placed front and center, while my older daughter -- who is a good dancer but not Caucasian -- is continually placed in the back or off to the far side. My younger daughter was once put in the front purely due to her small size in a formation, but it wasn't part of any fair or rotating system that would give all dancers a chance to shine. The final straw has been this: Multiple Caucasian dancers have been allowed to miss tech rehearsals and still participate in shows. Meanwhile, my daughters, who need to miss a single 24-hour window for a required ski team race and assessment (and for which we arranged to return early at significant cost of flying in, tickets already purchased), were told just 3 days before that they would not be allowed to perform once they fly in -- despite knowing their choreography thoroughly and being disciplined, capable dancers. The rigidity applied to them simply hasn't been applied to others. The pattern is painful to watch as a parent. It's demoralizing for kids who have worked hard and earned their place on stage. It's their right and not someone's at the front desk to strip them of who doesn't even see them. At the start of the year parents also receive an extremely one-sided agreement through DocuSign -- which I declined to sign because it was so imbalanced. I can't say I'm surprised. But it is disheartening to pay thousands of dollars for a program that delivers minimal instruction, selectively enforces rules for preferential kids, and ultimately allows discriminatory dynamics to persist. I wish our experience had been different, but based on what we've seen, I cannot recommend PAAM for families seeking a fair, inclusive, or educationally meaningful dance program.

I'm not sure why but she said it was scary and wouldn't enter the studio. The holiday spectacular, while adorable-but can be very intense for smaller children. The (little) girls are all expected to wear makeup; such as mascara, rouge and lipstick, which some people may not want their kids to wear under a certain age. The performances are cute, but about 50 kids on stage. Pros: Nice facilities, clean, on trend dance classes (I.e Taylor Swift or Wicked/what's on broadway). Sweet teachers. Cons: Lots of marketing pressure to sign up for classes or your kid won't get into their dance class. Pressure to sign up when is opens or not in. $40 fee just to change a class even if you made a mistake. Their refund policy is not family friendly. I really tried to get my daughter (6) to go into dance class, but she was having anxiety about going. She was scared about going to a new class with new people and just wouldn't go in. This particular performance has about 50 little 6 year olds tap dancing or doing hip hop on stage and a wait list. So, it was a very popular class. However they don't offer refunds. The cost for a semester (Jan-May) is about $700 for a weekly lesson + performance. I think it's just something you should be aware of when signing up to send your kid here is that you may not get any funds back if they can't go for any reason. (Anxiety, injury, work/childcare issues etc.) So, perhaps think about this before you sign up. Recommendation: don't pressure parents so much on sign up day to get into the classes and then don't offer refunds. Offer more "try before you buy" options or options for little girls who might be more hesitant to try new things.

Our wedding at the Headlands Center for the Arts was beyond the gorgeous, spiritual, artistic,…read morewarm, and loving day I had envisioned for months during the planning. Once we visited, we just KNEW this was our location. During our tour, we stood in the ceremony spot in the East Wing and asked each other, "is this it?" And yes, is certainly was. A few months later, that spot is where we happily said "I do!" Driving into the Headlands is like entering a magical realm of nature, silence, and openness. The building has such relaxed, artistic vibe. When designing our wedding's look and feel, we were committed to working with its already super cool appeal. The distressed golden walls of the Rodeo Room have such character, making it the perfect backdrop for our Photo Booth selfie station... and they even inspired the texture of our wedding cake! Beyond the fact that we loved the venue, it is especially heartwarming to know that our rental fee is going toward sustaining this artistic organization and its artists, helping it to thrive. The wedding budget is always tricky and a bit painful, but it feels really good to know that chunk of money is going toward a worthy local cause. Being a DIY bride, I really appreciated how exceptionally responsive both the in-house staff who would immediately answer all the weird little questions that kept popping up that I couldn't find in our contract. Oh, and the FOOD!!! Katie Powers, their in-house caterer is an artist. She is exceptionally dedicated to creating local, sustainable, and delicious meals. Although she doesn't provide taste testing, Katie's descriptions and enthusiasm while building our menu together at our in-person meeting was infectious, giving us the confidence that it would be amazing. We opted to have our meal served family-style which really enhanced the sense of community and appreciation for the meal. It is also very special to have an in-house caterer cook from her kitchen with her staff. The service, artistry, and flavors had everyone swooning and diving in for seconds. Our biggest concern was the latrine... the open unisex bathroom that's sort of creepy. However, using our very own living room drapes and some tension rods, we easily sectioned the room off into Men's and Ladies areas. Adding candles, flowers, music, and artsy magnets along the metal stall doors, we turned it around and that military latrine became a cool oasis where everyone felt comfortable... even this bride who appreciated the large stall when negotiating my dress.... Going forward, we are so thankful this magical gem is available to our enjoyment, as we look forward to becoming members and experiencing the works from their artists in residence. For anyone thinking that this may be the venue for you, just like they say when you meet the right one, when you know, you know!

They rented out the family and youth hostels for all their friends and family, and we had the most marveous time. The two of them were artist in residence in 2000 and 2004, and they speak very highly of their experience, so much so that they got married there! The Center for the Arts has art openings, special showings, performances and art residents working/living out there all year long. Check it out or go stay at the hostel some weekend. It's gorgeous out there. It's so tucked away and peaceful in the valley there, yet so close to the city. It's like a little retreat. ----------------- just to paint a picture: THE ARTISTS' STUDIOS The Headlands' buildings are home to nearly 40 studios such as this one, where artists in residence pursue their work and often make it available for the public to view. THE ARCHIVE ROOM Over the years, bits and pieces of the rich military history and the remarkable natural phenomena of the Headlands Center for the Arts have been discovered, uncovered and left behind. The Archive Room contains a collection of these objects. As a testament to the layers of history that we have unearthed, this room contains layers of debris generated by each renovation project. As this place ages and changes, new layers of detritus are added. New additions are welcome. THE MAIN BUILDING Renowned artist David Ireland transformed the rooms and halls in this 1907 military-barracks building, where the wedding ceremony was held. Twenty four young artists volunteered for a year on an artistic journey that in many ways was more like an archaeological dig than an art project. Ireland conceives of his work as exploration rather than imposition. Things that have acquired an identity of their own over time -- broken chairs, brooms worn by use, stained walls -- intrigue him, and this sense of history informs his work. David Ireland and his crew sandblasted the layers of paint off the stamped-tin ceilings and pillars, and using sandpaper, solvents and even dental tools, picked the paint off the beautiful stairwell, railings and banisters. In the East Wing (the ceremony site), they stripped the walls down to the original plaster and the baseboards to their fine wood. These rooms are not only beautiful works of art, but important gathering places. Their functional duality -- aesthetic and practical -- reflects the Headland's mission and the kind of art it exists to support. Simply put, public and site art seek to take art out of its frame and put it back into the real world. Public art responds to its audience, as site art responds to its location. David Ireland's rooms serve both goals, situated at the heart of a thriving art center, sharing its artistic treasures with the public.
