When I was at Touchstone, not only did I receive an incredible education in terms of the necessary math, science, and literary skills to go on to be extremely successful in higher level courses in High School, but also every skill necessary to take on the inevitable academic adversities that have come my way further on in my doctorate program at Northeastern University. I find myself still recalling the study skills I once learned at Touchstone, the ability to problem solve new situations that I may not have had to overcome in my more traditional high school education. One of the most important things I have come to appreciate as I get further into Higher Education is the knowledge of how to learn and apply yourself related to my own abilities and preferences. The skills I learned at Touchstone allowed me to tackle the rest of my schooling with confidence and a level head, one of the hardest things to maintain throughout schooling these days. Socially, the model at Touchstone allows for kids to grow as individuals, while building relationships along the way. There is no room for degradation of others due to deviating from the norm and becoming one's best self. I was able to explore all of my interests, and find out areas I could prosper moving forward. Overall, Touchstone was by far the most wholistic aspect of my education thus far. It gave me the skills to tackle every aspect of life with enthusiasm, determination, and general fulfillment, constantly staying in touch with my long term goals while enjoying all the moments along the way.

Everything that was recently said about VVS is mostly true - things are moving around a LOT right…read morenow and removing the head of school (for performance), without having a replacement was extremely poor planning. It is a tiny 30-40 boy school with a shoestring budget. Our son calls all the time, he is a talker and tells every detail. He has hardly mentioned the disruption at the top effecting his day-to-day life. All of that said, This school has changed our entire family's life. Our son arrived 18 months ago and the love, care, consistency is exactly what our spectrum son needed. Our marriage was so strained, his sister was afraid of him, and he was getting bigger everyday. He hated the things he did and the remorse was overwhelming and the the cycle would start again. We all began to lose our own ground as we slowly went from thriving to barely surviving. VVS has been a miracle. When he first got there, we had talk about behavior incidents - small but constant. Last night he called to tell us about a 100% on a quiz and his golf score, the soccer game he played in and the pickle tournament coming up. This is a wonderful place for boys. It is gentle but holds these boys accountable for absolutely everything. They reshape thes boys in to young men who graduate with confidence, achievement and so much emotional intelligence. If they are open and let the school mold them, they can handle the world far beyond any of their peers entering high school.

I am a former student of SVS and unfortunately I cannot be proud of this affiliation. During the…read moreyears I attended and afterward I witnessed some blatant hypocrisy and violations of the school's stated philosophy, including by some of the most seasoned staff members. The claim is that decisions are to be made by the entire community via School Meeting, but the staff do in fact gatekeep and manage to exclude any ideas or proposals that they don't like without any discussion whatsoever. I personally have known quite a few people who were burned by the heavy-handed controlling efforts of certain staff members. Make no mistake: SVS is NOT a democratic school; it merely masquerades as one. If the founders don't like your idea (or don't like you), it won't be up for a vote; it'll be squashed preemptively. There isn't necessarily anything wrong with a school where students aren't in charge. But it shouldn't pretend to be what it's not.
