Losing my mom was one of the most painful experiences of my life, but the kindness and care we received from this mortuary helped carry us through it in a way I'll never forget. From the very beginning, Thomas and Jodi treated us and my mother with gentleness, dignity, and deep respect. Jodi was exactly the person we needed to guide us through the difficult paperwork and the emotional process of choosing the final items for my mom's goodbye. They helped us navigate the death and arrangements of our mother- Myrna McBride when she passed away 3 years ago and now our father Mike McBride. They walked us through very difficult situations to plan services to celebrate the life of loved ones lost. They guided us through the process and helped us experience what we needed to find the peace when our hearts were breaking. It was difficult watching our mother die and suffer from cancer. This place was so perfect to the T. Obviously anyone looking into these areas know it is not an easy time. All the ladies that assisted here were so helpful in going over all details and exactly what each item was. From the bundles, to the transport, etc. Everything was a whole package. Losing my Mom was a hard thing to experience. So much emotion and so much to do. It could have been overwhelming if making funeral arrangements didn't go so smoothly as they did with Alhiser-Comer. After the funeral service in Escondido, we were not up to traveling down to San Diego to the cemetery. The staff was very understanding. so I called to get some information and schedule my cremation when I die, and I found out the woman who called me, was very quick to get me off the phone very quick to get me into an appointment. I had a couple of questions, and she basically told me that if I don't pay for the cremation right now, that when I die, my cost can actually skyrocket which basically makes me want to now shop around and bye-bye I'll Heiser comer mortuary. I mean very unprofessional, trying to get me off the phone trying to pressure me into an appointment which I did make for next Thursday but you can go ahead and cancel. The pressure to buy now was just ridiculous. I mean why do people have life insurance policies if not to have that policy pay for everything when you die if you don't have the money right now, so I found the whole experience rather dark and forceful kind of like death itself. yeah no thanks. and to jack up the prices when you die is just so laughable I mean how in the world are prices for cremation going to skyrocket tomorrow or 10 years or 20 years from now all you're doing is tossing a body onto a slab and turning the furnace on that's ridiculous. read more

In 2010, when Dad passed away, he and his wife had pre-paid their final arrangements and cremation. The whole process was seamless and perfectly handled. The only additional expense was for a few additional death certificates. My husband and I were so pleased with the results, we pre-paid our own arrangements the same year. When my husband passed away in June, the whole process was, again, seamless. The staff at Alhiser-Comer was extremely helpful, sympathetic, honest, and helpful. We always hope that we would not need the services of a mortuary for any member of our family; yet this is a service that is inevitable. Should you find yourself in this situation, I hope that you may be able to avail of Alhiser-Comer's services. My husband's grandmother passed away a few days before Thanksgiving. Even with the holidays, Thomas was very responsive. I called on the Friday after Thanksgiving regarding a small matter ( a tribute page on their website), and he offered to drive to the office. I am fairly sure that it may not be a short drive, given the are code on the caller ID puts him at least 20 minutes away. Even if he was near the office (considering phone number portability), it was still a very nice gesture to leave family the day after Thanksgiving. He then sends me a message with an email address for Megan who, when I sent her the request, immediately put up the tribute page. He also assured me that the flowers the grandchildren ordered will be with the casket by funeral mass service the following day, together with an easel on which a large photograph can be put. Sure enough, at the church, everything was in order. There were only Thomas and Megan (a different Megan, I hope I spelled her name correctly), yet they handled everything competently. I even gave them an extra job of handing out the memorial programs which they accepted willingly. Megan even told me when the programs were running low. The viewing was scheduled after the mass. Except for the hiccup with the coffee (people were asking for it, but, it was still brewing). I suspect because it was the holiday weekend, they were shorthanded. Regularly, I think someone else had the coffee brewing before the funeral mass crew came back. Or maybe, the usual schedule is to have the viewing first, then the funeral mass, then the funeral. In this instance, we had to accommodate the cemetery's policy, and therefore had the services switched around. Even with the coffee issue, they went above and beyond. I was amazed when I saw Megan bringing their office Keurig to the table. I asked her about it (there was already a thermos of coffee on the table). She said that there was a guest who requested that it be brought to the reception area. Instead of creating an issue by pointing out that coffee was already available, they still accommodated the request. There are many more small kindnesses which may be too many to list. But, above all, it is the care with which this family-owned business puts into their service. Thank you very much Alhiser-Comer. Thank you for making a difficult time less stressful. I rarely leave reviews on Yelp. I hesitated leaving a review for a mortuary because it seems kind of weird but here goes. I cannot say enough good things about this place. The people were friendly, professional, and warm. We have dealt with other mortuaries in the past and couldn't get out of there without being upsold several times. There was none of that there. When we went there to plan my father-in-law's memorial service, they were ready and laid out a very simple and concise plan. We were done in less than 30 minutes. We dealt with Denise mostly. There was no fake condolences from her like she knew what we were going through. However, she did prompt us to talk and laughed with us when we shared a memory. It was like talking to a friend. On the day of the memorial service they set up the room beautifully. After the service papers had to be signed to release the ashes. Everything was ready and it took no time at all. They even dealt with the newspaper for the obituary. I hope no one needs a mortuary soon but if you do, consider using Alhiser-Comer. It's family owned and you can tell. read more

Scott Pennington at Alhiser-Comer went out of his way to make sure all was taken care of for my family after my father died very suddenly in an accident. A friend of my father's, who had cancer and did thorough research on mortuaries in the event he died, had selected this one for himself. We were very glad we took his recommendation, as this highly ethical, caring team was very helpful at the most difficult of times. They are also very reasonably priced in comparison to other places and have their own crematorium off site. They even kindly arranged -- at no additional charge -- transportation of my father's body from the coroner in La Quinta to San Diego, as he had died on vacation. They communicated with Fort Rosecrans to arrange the ceremony there, as well. Really, once we visited, they took over for us -- and the price they quoted was exactly what we paid. It's difficult to say one is "happy" with mortuary services, but in this case we were. Because at the time I noticed that few people often take the time to leave reviews about mortuaries, I wanted to be sure to take the time to let people know about this place. read more

Note, 3 stars = A-OK. So no guff from anyone okay? The staff was courteous, professional, and efficient. No complaints there. I don't know how Alhiser-Comer compares to other mortuaries, because I never shopped around. My father passed away a few weeks ago. We knew Dad was dying, but I didn't think about choosing a mortuary prior to his death. Big mistake, it turns out. Dad didn't want to talk about these matters except to tell us that he didn't want us to spend much. So... We opted not to have my father embalmed because a. it's not necessary and b. we weren't planning to have a viewing or an open casket at the services. We bought the cheapest casket they offer (made of fiber board) for $995 (later found it online for $650, but who shops for those things ahead of time). We didn't order any extras, no programs or cards, etc. Only asked for the free notice in the paper. My only request was to have his hands clasped on his chest in the manner in which he always slept. (At the funeral, Roger assured me it was done, demonstrating to me with his wrists crossed over his chest. Not the pose I showed him, but oh, well.) The other burial costs were all free (compliments of the USAF). So all that we needed was someone to dress Dad, place him in a coffin, and deliver him to the cemetery. (All of which I could have done myself, but I think there are laws that prohibit that kind of DIY.) There was no church service, just the government-standard 30-min cemetery shelter committal service that is somewhat graveside. We even handled the flowers on our own. The price tag? Over $5000, which sadly turns out to be half of all Mom's getting from insurance. Yeah. Someone told me that if you purchase your mortuary "package" prior to death, it is generally 50% cheaper. I was always afraid to pre-purchase such a plan, because I've read many "horror" stories of how people are milked for years, with funeral homes asking for more and more as the years go by, citing rising costs. I don't know what to recommend. I'll probably look into a plan for Mom and hope for the best. I hope to get confirmation that the "folding cards" that we canceled were deducted from the bill. Only a savings of $75, but it's something. Also, someone on their staff misspelled my father's name when they applied for the death certificates, so we asked them to file an amendment and to re-order the certificates, for which we paid $63 (the state charges $21 each) and we asked for 3. Another thing to wait for in getting things settled with insurance company, banks, credit cards, and Downwinder's Claim. On the plus side: everyone on their staff is very nice and the coffin was pretty, so much more than we expected. read more

My father passed away, and I was at a loss, but Sandy gave me an excellent service from her heart. She is very knowledgeable about the whole process, and she even came to the graveyard and stayed there even after we left and took care of the rest. She has listened carefully and did everthing according to my requests. Also, Tom embalmed superbly not only with his excellent skill but also with his empathetic heart.
