Ive come here once for the baby play area, Never again! Whilst it states that the area is cleaned every day before closing this is simply not true. We came here on a Wednesday morning right after opening and the entire area is filthy. This was definitely not cleaned. I took pictures of the wipes after cleaning one or two objects and its gross. Kids put these toys in their mouths. Y'all have to do better and actually clean the area! read more

What a great library! Definitely stop by for a visit. We brought our pre-schooler in knowing we would have a great time. We were disappointed that the play area was closed due to the pandemic. We understood, but we were still sad. We immediately went over to the books and found a gold mine. We love the Berenstain Bears and found some that we didn't have that we could read while at the library. We loved the scavenger hunt and the weekly kids' craft. Update: Previous review is out dated. This local library is large and has a lot to offer. Recently updated and a wing added in to make it even bigger than before. The entire lower level is the youth department. Younger kids books to the left with a small play area. Librarian desk in the middle as a focal point for questions and guidance. Older kids books, DVD's, research books and encyclopedias to the right. There are several study rooms available and a large meeting room for story time. Upstairs (or up the elevator) is the adult section. Here you will find Hot, new books; dvds; a magazine room that doubles as a quiet room on the back side of the quiet wing; research books; fiction; non-fiction; study rooms; Teen Room; craft room. If you have the library app in your mobile device you can place books and DVD's on hold to be picked up at the front desk. The youth and teen department heads are most helpful and great at hosting various activities throughout the year. The adult section librarians are kind and helpful. We love our local library and our librarian friends whom we've come to know over the years of bringing our now teenager to all the activities and school research over the years. If you are a taxpaying resident and you haven't visited this library, you need to get off of your phone/computer right now and head over. I grew up going to the Schaumburg Township District Library, so I have high expectations in any library I walk into. Let me tell you, where Algonquin lacks in size, it makes up for in customer service, ease of use, and community events. Some things I really love : * Polite and friendly staff 99.9% of the time (there was this one incident...) * Overall decent selection of materials, and great community of local libraries when they don't have something * Awesome online resources (Consumer reports access, Mango language training) * Well attended community events (Storytime, Musicans) * Really efficient self-check out process * Lower level is excellent for kids to play and read The only thing to improve is to make this place bigger and have more local materials, which is really beyond their control. I suggest you come here and see for yourself. Its size makes it feel more accessible and welcoming. You can tell that the team here knows their patrons, and cares about the outcome of every interaction. read more

Lovely library located in an idyllic location. We do not live in Algonquin, but make the trip to go to this library. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful, especially to young children that need help finding something or answers to other questions. They have crafts available to take home and have reading incentives throughout the year. The children's area is beautifully decorated and a joy to be in. After we pick up our library materials, we go for a small hike through the beautiful fields nearby. If we want to challenge ourselves, we hike up the big hill. read more

Attention procrastinators, slow readers/watchers/listeners, busy people, and scofflaws. This library has NO LATE FINES. Ahem. This library has NO LATE FEES. Isn't that exciting? And a draw to use this library and its cool collection of books, DVDs, audiobooks, cd? You can utilize all that with out "Bundying a book." To piggyback on my Married With Children reference, this system means what's to stop ....say...a person who really loves books of photography to check out 15 books and keep them indefinitely for their own personal collection and display?! Or entice people with popular items checked out that there's a long hold list of patrons waiting - to return those hot commodities for those patiently panting to have them? But the system is actually working. * Its Algonquin material to the Algonquin library no fee, if you return another library's material you received and checked out from the consortium or Algonquin material to some other library that you happen to be at you will be fined. read more

Background: Now I grew up going to the library - we would check out the maximum nuber of books allowed every single visit. When I was old enough to ride a bike to the library I would do that on a nearly dailly basis. The library I grew up with was the Schaumburg library - one of the finest I have EVER visited. I share all of this with you because you must understand the high standard I have for a library. I moved out to Algonquin about 5 years ago. I was very pleased to find a library that I could enjoy and had many fo the services I was used to. So why 4 stars and not 5? Their collection is a bit limited - thoughgh far batter than most in the area, especially Dundee (as has been mentioned). The staff that is very good and supportive as well. I happen to love to take my boys to the story time they have each week (you can register free on the website) as well as a short educational movie time as well every other week. The facilities are not outdated though they could use addtioanl resources to be a 5 star library much like Schaumburg's. read more

The main/west branch of the Algonquin Public Library is beautiful. They have a drive-thru service to pick up and return materials - just call ahead to request pick-up and they'll happily cater to your lazy wishes The children's and adolescent sections are downstairs, separating them from the adult collection. They have computer terminals for game playing, and lots of tables and chairs. Upstairs is home to the adult collection, plus numerous study rooms and computer terminals. I think that, having grown up in a town with an exceptional library, I'm spoiled when it comes to libraries. Algonquin's library is ok, albiet a bit on the small side. The staff is very friendly and helpful, which I appreciate. The cheery woman at the checkout counter was able to help me get a library card, finally...I had been putting it off for the past 2 years. She asked if the "guy behind" me wanted a card too & then I had to explain that he already had one and that I was the procrastinator. She got a good laugh out of that. The process was pretty darn easy, and before I knew it, I was the proud owner of a brand spankin new library card, a license to read, if you will. The biggest drawback of this library is a lack of signage. I knew where the "Adult Fiction" was, because it was the only sign that I could see. The hubs and I meandered up and down the aisles in search of their DVD collection, which we finally did find. They do have a nice selection of movies, documentaries, and TV shows, and we were each able to find something to rent. Because the library was closing shortly, we weren't able to wander around the rest of the place to get a lay of the land, but I'm sure one of these days I'll have time to spend the better part of a day getting lost in the stacks. read more

Adding to Tracy I's praise of this place! There is absolutely no comparison between Algonquin and Dundee, NONE. This is a big library with many different authors, computers, and just in general HELPFUL staff. This staff knows their stuff. I have never been disappointed in them. (I wish I could say they felt the same about me, but in my behalf, all my fines ARE paid up) If nothing else this place is too good. (I take out too many books, which I later find under my car seat due to seats being full) LOVED IT! (take that Dunee) read more

Amazing that you don't really know the free treasures hidden in your villages...well this is definitely one of the best in Algonquin! The kids resources are amazing. A great selection of books, kid and adult movies, comics and then they have a large number of computers to use, wifi, a new sitting foyer with vending machines and comfy chairs and many activities throughout the year for the whole family. Kids get book reading seasons, costume parties, dance parties and so much more. Check it out! Don't forget the friend of the book sale had boss for add much as. 25 cents! Amazing read more

This library has been under construction forever!! The a/c does not work! Why would you do that in the middle of summer? When visiting the last few times its was unbearably hot and I over heard a person complaining about the heat! You think they would finish it already seems to be taking forever.And they had a nice little counter by the front door and they took it out and put the most uncomfortable seats in its place!! Smh not the way to get people to visit you! I guess I'll go to crystal lake library instead much nicer and the a/c works. Update: I go back to use the wifi and all I can say is wow! They have no place to sit and read or do your iPad! They changed the whole place around and put the front desk right at the front door! I sat for a few minutes in the chair by the door and was listening to the person at the desk tell every person something as they walk in.It's almost like they are watching everyone come and go.They moved the nice little spot that you could sit inside where the old checkout desk was!!!?????? They really messed this library up and made it smaller and less friendly to visit! Why put the adult desk way back in the corner??? The old layout was much better! read more

Customer service stinks! I came here with my 4 and 7 year old niece and nephew, and they refused to use my ID to loan me books on my account because my ID showed my new address. Needless to say we were all super disappointed. I just moved a recently and haven't had a chance to get a new card from my new library yet but I was a resident of Lake in the Hills for a long time. She insisted that I pay Palatine taxes now not Lake In the Hills so I have no right to check out books from this library anymore. Wow, just wow. This library is awesome. My son is involved with the summer reading program every year, and he loves it. They have a great children's section and the staff is so nice. The self check out needs some work though, but that's my only complaint. read more

I come here for piece and quiet. I was taught to always be quiet at the library. Well I guess that does not apply to the front desk staff. Always laughing loudly, talking loudly, every annoying thing you can think of. Maybe they belong in the kiddie area downstairs. read more

I've grown up going to the branch and main library in Algonquin. I've gone to story times, craft days, book clubs and parties, an author signing, book sales, and have sat at one of the nice big tables to do homework for far too many hours. I worked here for the year before I left for college, as well. What a great job, seriously. The staff are good at what they do and they are great people. I'm a huge fan of the Algonquin library. It offers a multitude of programs for all ages. The children's section, on the lower level of the library, has computers for kids to play on (with a library card #); blocks to play with; a train table; salt-water aquarium; an extra-large checkers board; and headphones to listen to the "CD of the week". I also like that you can put books on hold and request to pick them up through the drive-up window. The AAPLD is part of the CCS system, which means you can request books from any of the other libraries in the system and return your books to any of the libraries in the system (many suburban libraries.) My only complaint is that DVD loans only last a week and they have NO grace period--- charging $1/day for overdues. read more

I love this library because it's out of the way but not in the middle of no where. None of the other libraries in the area can compare to this one. I grew up on this library. I always find exactly what I need at this library, and if I can't, then it's usually checked out! I can ride my bike over to it if I wanted to, but it's across Randall Road for me and it's a BIT cold out as of now. The staff is always warm and helpful to me whenever I need help. I've also partaken in the activities they host and they are always wonderful. My science projects and beyond are always better because everyone is so willing to help at this library. They know what they're doing. I love the drive-thru drop-off. It makes returning books that much easier. I love this place. It's huge with a wide selection and a wonderful place to be. read more

The new entry way and electronic doors are a very nice upgrade . What is not so good is trying to enter the library itself . Trying to get past the service desk can be an adventure . Between the limited aceess be clogged up by the carts of books , staff and vistors in can often be a challenge. We love this place! It has such an amazing selection of books AND dvds. It also has a great children's area. My kids will play there for hours which is great during the winter to get out of the house. It has a fun train table that my kids (6, 4, & 1) all love. It has a fun little play house, play kitchen, puzzles, and other fun toys to play with. I'm not even in the library's district but with my districts library card I can still take full advantage of it. My kids still participate in their story time. It really is such a great little gem that my kids and I look forward to going to weekly. read more
