The psych clinic can be that much-needed Schwarzenegger who will protect you and pump. you. up. so you can continue to protect yourself. The protocol goes something like this: You first call to schedule a consultation appointment. You will more than likely talk to John who is down to earth, calming, and professional. The consultation consists of filling out a bunch of paperwork and a 300+ question survey which helps them determine your mental health needs and to match you with a person who is best suited for those. This is pretty stress-free and involves you touching a touch-screen a bunch of times while reflecting on all the crappy stuff going on in your life for the past month. This little jaunt down memory lane will cost you $40. After that, it takes usually about three weeks to schedule your first appointment but once you're in, getting weekly appointments is easy peasy. If you have BCN grad care, your co-pay is about $20 which is glorious compared to the $150+ per hour you'd be paying out of pocket. My experiences here have been almost all positive. The therapists are generally grad or post-grad students who are doing their 'residency' at U of M. The good news is: 1) they're usually young and inspired, ready to make a difference in the world, really wanting to learn from you and be there for you 2) as a grad student, they are more or less your peers, which makes talking about "young adult" stuff comfortable and relatable 3) since they're at U of M you know they're they're at the top, if not near the top, of their field The bad news is 1) most of them leave after about a year which means if you want stable long-term therapy, you will need to get a new therapist (the upshot to this? you can try out different therapists without feeling guilty about ditching your last one) 2) since they are students, they may not have as much experience as more seasoned veterans 3) there is only one psychiatrist on staff, getting an appointment with her is hard, and I didn't have the best rapport with her (I got the sense she was a little judgmental and she was quick to pile on various medications without talking about other supplements or life changes) As a person who is generally very DIY about taking care of myself, stubborn, and always wanting to stress my independence and self-reliance, this was a surprisingly beneficial and comforting outlet for when life was just too much to handle. So if you're feeling worn out, bummed out, wounded, or pissed off, the staff here will give you a bandage, kiss your boo-boo, and teach your how to fight gravity. Affordable. Effective. Empowering. If you're even flirting with the idea of talking to someone and getting support, this is a fantastic place for a first-timer (even if you might be resistant to the whole "therapy" idea).

I was stable on medication from a previous doctor, and then I got a severe rash and itching from a change of dose and mixing in new medication. Couldn't get ahold of him, so I went cold turkey off these medications, which could have ended badly. He also doesn't understand how to approach complex chronic mental illness. If you need a therapist to listen to your daily struggles, he's there to listen, but has nothing to offer someone struggling with chronic severe depression or cptsd.

With his encouragement, comforting words of wisdom and warm laughter I navigated life with ease. When I met him I couldn't tie MY shoelaces. He is an expert and highly trained specialist. We focused intensely on resolution, but at no time did he EVER put me on drugs; on the contrary he got me OFF of them: immediately! He is soon retiring and the mental health community will lose a tremendous asset. Shameful, someone is posting negative reviews of him all over the internet! Probably all fake. Note: I do have a scary Yelp stalker (see my review of Yelp) who counters my reviews out of unmitigated ruthless spite (please! get help!). My original review (removed by me) was up FIRST, and re-posted. The horrible negative ones came after, coincidentally there were NO reviews of this Doctor before mine years ago. Anyone can post anything (however dubious) on Yelp which is why I quit using this platform. No 'board certified' psychiatrist would EVER risk losing his license by over medicating a patient to where they couldn't function. Absurd! One mentions the "university" doctors, well, Dr. Miller used to be on faculty at U of M for years (also obtained a certificate from there). He has a very reputable standing both within and out of the University. He is also a training supervising analyst at the MI Psychoanalytic Institute. He doesn't even take insurance that is how good he is, he can be discerning about who he sees (cash only). He probably kicked these psychos out if they actually did go to him, seriously doubt it.

I tried to work it out but he became angry and suddenly refused to treat me without providing any references.
