It doesn't look much from outside, but Psarakos Brothers Vege Barn is a little bastion of all…read morethings fruit and vegetable in the inner north. Stretching over a couple of football fields' worth of real estate, the place is chocked full with produce ranging from your run of the mill 'Australian'-style spuds and onions, to a wide range of Asian varieties and further regional obscurities. The stuff here is pretty much non-organic, but is usually in pretty good shape at least for a week after purchase. The big difference here are the price-points. Psarakos provide their veges in bulk, so it pays to sift through the bins, but the prices match and even often better those seen at Preston or Victoria markets. Plus there is very little hassle-factor in shopping here, with ample parking and a very relaxed overall vibe about the place. A downside is the opening hours which are limited and Saturdays can be a little hectic. But if you hate the market rush and chow through a couple of bags of greens a week, you can walk out of here with two bags full of groceries for under forty bucks.

While the deli counter is where it is at for freshly made produce the side of the store is home to a selection of groceries. This is where you will find your Mediterranean brands. Diana is one of those awesome little finds where you know once you've been there but once, you'll be going back again and again. The one thing that's lacking around this part of Thornbury are supermarkets. There is one in the Psarakos complex that is pretty average, so it's nice that Diana picks up some of that slack. The term 'supermarket' can be applied loosely here. They have a lot of Mediterranean goods and an awesome deli section (the cheese, salami, olives and the likes kick serious arse), but you won't find your big supermarket chain products here. What they do have though is a booze section. It's a strange concept that you can't buy booze in most supermarkets in Australia (look anywhere else around the world and you can), so it's also nice to see Diana bucking the system. They make a claim here of being a 'friendly grocer' and they totally live up to that. This is a family business that services the community and that is nothing to be sniffed at.

There's not a huge range of goods across the board, but you could still easily do a basic shop there in one hit. Walking in the doors you're greeted by the smells from the deli, luring you into the back of the shop to all your olive, cheese and meat needs. There's a small nut station where you can buy them by weight rather than is bags, and a little bottle shop near the front. They also have a good range of obscure product brands, some of which are surprisingly good. The main drawback is the short opening hours, but they're fairly typical for this kind of store. There's only really one checkout, but it's not too busy and the people working it are genuinely nice to you.

OHHH I LOVE this place…read more I swear I could live here (at night.. when its quiet). It has EVERYTHING food wise you could imagine, and more. - Freshly (like right in front of your eyes) made orange and apple juice. - Meat, meat MEAT - every meat you can imagine and drool over - Baked goods... so many... try and avoid it! - Fresh ALL AUSTRALIAN produce.. yum! But the best part is the cafe inside. Open till 3pm every day - they serve all the traditional breakfast dishes like Eggs Benedict, Big Breakfast & Smashed Avo... but they also have adorable cakes, wraps and toasted sandwiches. Great service and price too... I want to go back right now :)
