Furthermore, the store isn't super crazy like the Albert Heijn just around the corner - no super long lines with people trying to cut you. They have a great selection of baking ingredients - so much more natural than the stuff at Albert Heijn. Also, they make food daily in the store and it is delicious; the fresh lasagna is a bit expensive but oh sooooo yummy. There are a few drawbacks, which is why I cannot give it five stars. First, I find that I cannot ever do all of my shopping there - for example, they do not carry paper dinner napkins (weird, right?). I especially find that they lack some items in the produce area - they really only carry about one or two fresh herbs at a time (unlike the large selection at Albert Heijn), and you always have to purchase the whole herb plant. The other day I was in the store, and they weren't carrying limes (again, weird). Lastly, I have never been impressed with their meat selection, as it always looks picked-over and lacking in variety. Overall, a great place to shop, but do not plan on doing all of your shopping there.

I've always had friendly service here too, plus they take credit cards, which still seems rare in The Netherlands. (They do charge a small fee I think though, for a credit card, like a quarter? Debit/pin cards are free) This store is huuuge too, with a liquor store and drug store on the first floor. This is definitely the biggest Dirk I've seen. It gets pretty busy here, so be prepared for an occasional restocking cart in the aisles and a lot of other shopping carts, but that's probably because it's way cheaper than the nearby Albert Heijn.

It can be compared to an American grocery store with regards to lay out and space, and they offer a lot of choices as well. They even have a fresh flower section as well as a coffee section. Even their sushi section has some fresh sushi that is not as expensive as you would get in a restaurant. When compared to other grocery stores in the area, Albert Heijns is definitely more expensive. But they do offer quality for the price. If you're looking for slightly cheaper groceries, you can look up close-by Asian supermarkets or Turkish supermarkets which also offer great quality vegetables and more ethnic food choices. I would recommend going AH earlier on in the day as opposed to later in the evening because they usually run out of sliced bread. But that is the case with most grocery stores in the Netherlands, because the bread is usually baked fresh every day and they only make enough so that they don't have to sell leftovers for the next day. The Dutch are truly serious about their bread! Also love their grocery scanner option. A great way to save time!

They have some pre-packaged foods near the gates as well, and I found them to be a great choice since I was traveling and did not have access to a kitchen.

You must try it, if you have Celiac or you have been trying to make an effort to take a break on the gluten. It's literally the best! No bakery or pastry shop that i have ever been to can top this one. Go to the frozen section and you will find a medium size freezer separate from the rest of freezers, it is near the seafood. It is exclusive, only for gluten-free breads,pastries, and pizza dough. Open it and grab 2 apple pies because you will wish you would have bought 2 instead of 1 and also buy 1 gluten free pizza dough, it's better than the one at Alberjein that taste awful. Also once you get home with it, then put it in your oven or microwave to defrost. It taste amazing, it will melt in your mouth. Also keep in mind there are other gluten-free products spread through out the store, but the apple pie is so far the best. Enjoy!

So while most students were spending their limited resources on beer and drinking binges, I went shopping at Kings. Their product range is so tempting I tell myself to not go crazy, just get what you need and get out...fast! Let me take you along a stroll through this luxury grocery store and the internal dialogue going on...... Oew Wijs & Zonen Java mocha coffee..."You hardly drink coffee, don't need coffee". Some of their Indian chai blend tea would be nice though.... Sweet, Gavottes Crepe Dantelle...."No, don't go there!" Walkers short bread cookies??...."You know what will happen, you're gonna eat them all in 1 go till you're nauseous" Kings' crown jewel # 109 Grisbi Lemon cream cookies then?? "Fine, just 1 package though and don't finish them all that same night!" Soup from the Soep Fabriek is always good to have as an emergency meal. Get some pure tomato soup ala Johannes van Dam. That Gastoria rouille will be perfect to liven up the bisque soup I got at Vis op Zuid. Kind of bland without it.... Don't even look at the lemon merengue pie or the lemon cakes at the bakery. I headed here with some specific stuff in my and even though I did not find it I left this place with lots of goodies and if I had followed my stomach's advise, and not my wallet's, I would have left with much more. If you live in Amsterdam you probably would not go to this place all the time, so it is handy to come with money and maybe a car because you will probably buy lot's of stuff here. It is nearly impossible to walk through this store without spending to much money on delicious stuff (also because stuff here is pretty expensive). Even though it is a pricey store I will definitely be back for some things that are not available at my nearest Albert Heijn. Nice extra; they had Halloween themed candies! Trick or treat! Nice!
