Purchased a knife here and I've been using it everyday since. I fell in love with the handle. Rod explained that he purchased the blades and only makes the handle from special wood and that knife was the last of both the blades which were purchased by him in Japan and the artisan who makes the blades no longer makes them. Also he could no longer get any of the wood to make the handle. I would have ordered a matching fork and dinner knives if I could. They did have some unique items in that store as opposed to what you would find in the other cruise ports and they did seem to be of higher quantity than the other store,but I could not say for sure that they were made by Alaskan artisans. We got a few free pieces of fudge for purchasing a knife. My husband said it was good, but nothing to write home about. Maybe we got that wrong flavor? We are from San Francisco, so there plenty of really good desserts to be had here I would like to address discrimination charges left by the other reviewers. We are Chinese (and look it) and did not feel that we were discriminated against during our time at the store. Please note that there were other flags other than the confederate one in the store. Both Rod and his wife and the ladies who rang us up and provided the fudge were perfectly nice to us. Also, I did not notice any discrimination against other people of color while in the store. There were plenty of people of color on our cruise ship who went into this store. If there was any incident of discrimination during my visit, I would have left without making a purchase. read more

We tried their fudge and yes, it's really the best I've had BUT while waiting at the register to pay I noticed the full size confederate flag on the wall. Wow. Crazy to see it so boldly displayed at a tourist business. The confederate flag, along with an American flag and a huge "we support our troops" banner...only thing obviously missing was a Trump 2024/Make America Great Again banner. Nope. read more

Considering that Haines is not as big as Juneau or even Ketchikan, we were so surprised to see the variety of the merchandise at Alaska Rod's. Many beautiful custom items you won't find anywhere else. So many items sold at most of the Tourists shops have printed on them 'Alaska", but when you check carefully...they are made in China! It was nice to see and buy items made IN Alaska! We bought several beautiful hand turned pens made by Ron Hinson. These pens are all unique, we've never seen anything similar to the, before. They are lovely and ,are wonderful gifts. I only wish we had bought several more!! BTW: Their fudge is a delight. Highly recommend this unique store! read more

I went in thinking this was a fishing rod place. Nope. It's Rod and Rhonda's place. The flag previous visitors mentioned was no longer hanging up or even in the store. So it wasn't a rod place, however it had very unique Alaskan made items. The owner called her husband and asked if he had the tool I needed and sure enough I was able to use it. This was after I checked every store in town. So with that done, I perused the items. My friend ended up buying birch bowls, we both purchased some of the pens that are carved there. If you want something unique that isn't seen in every Alaska souvenir store this is the place. The pen has a small bolt action to click it on. got the smallest gun case for it. Even their magnets were new ones I have never seen. Collect silver? I bought the coolest silver bullet. Rhonda has lived in Haines her whole life so she can definitely give you pointers where to go for anything you need. She gave us some good advice for the ferry. read more

My family stopped in to this store while visiting Haines during a small-ship cruise. We were appalled to see a giant Confederate battle flag displayed prominently on the wall, along with a container of small Confederate flags for sale. We questioned the woman at the counter about this racist symbol and she defended it, claiming the flag has "nothing to do with slavery." She said, "There are plenty of black people who are proud of their confederate ancestry." Wow, just wow. Please don't shop here. read more

Some interesting things in here, but we couldn't buy anything in good conscience. The store prominently displays the confederate flag and stars and bars flag on the wall for sale right next to the American flag and Alaskan flag. You can't claim it's about "Southern Pride" in Alaska. We took our business elsewhere. We are trying not to let our bad experience with this store give us a negative view of the whole town. There are many cute shops in Haines, there's no need to spend a cent here! read more

Alaska Rod's is owned by Rod and his wife in Haines. Lots of nice crafts but the specialty is Rod's semi-custom knives which are great. They are semi-custom because he does not make the steel himself (who does). We bought a great kitchen knife with a special Japanese steel soft inner/hard outer laminate alloy and an injected wood/epoxy handle. (Multiple patterns and colors available). These are high quality knives and priced accordingly ($80-$120). This is perfectly sized sashimi or meat slicing knife. For a reminder of real Alaska this is hard to beat. Highly recommended store. We walked up from the Westerdam Cruise ship and really enjoyed the town and 4th of July parade. This is not a touristy town which we liked. read more

Not a bad place to stop in for a trusty souvenir. I can't say that I was too big of a fan of the fudge. No doubt a good sugar pill that will instantly give you a nice little sugar high, but the overall taste wasn't anything special. I tried the Grizzly, Bubblegum, Peach, Cookie dough, and Rainbow Sprinkle topped fudge. The cookie dough was the only one to surpass a 3 star out of 5. Anyway, the staff was super nice and it's definitely a place to stop in for a gander. read more

This place was our favorite spot in Haines, AK. Very helpful owners and they have all different gifts and hand crafted items. Rod (the owner) makes his own knives and other tools out of beautiful woods. We are having him make us a set of steak knives in a charcoal cherry. Rod gave us great information about the town and we loved it! They also have amazing homemade fudge. The maple fudge was soooo good that we went back two times to get more to take back home. Great customer service and a definitely spot to visit when in Haines, Alaska. read more

Visited today, was going to be a $35 t-shirt, a drink and some fudge, waited in line 12 minutes. When it was my turn to checkout I asked if I could pay for the fudge with my t-shirt and drink. Was told yes. Got the $8 fudge and then was told I had to get in the back of the line AGAIN! As our family has owned a Travel agency for 40 years, customer service is everything. Unfortunately this store did not deliver on that front. I would not recommend this store to my Crystal Cruise guests. I ended up not buying the t-shirt as I have a rule that places that do not welcome you or or seem to want your business do not get my $. When people would walk in they were kindly greeted and others that were by the fudge counter (as were my kids) were asked if they would like to sample the fudge. My kids and I were not. I did buy the fudge (which was delicious) for my kids as they really wanted it. The total waiting time was 27 minutes to check out. I have to add that both of my kids are adopted, one is African American and one Dominican and Hispanic. I am Caucasian, I felt that my mixed race family played a part in the treatment we received. My daughter just told me about the confederate flag that they have in their store, disgusting and disgraceful. The only reason I'm giving this place one star is because my kids said the fudge was delicious. read more
