As one of the more noticeable taquerias in Salem, I'm genuinely surprised there aren't more reviews…read morefor El Padrino. (#1) For years when this taco cart operated along Portland Road (#2) it was low on the radar but known in the community. Fast forward a few years, it's not quite a brick & mortar, but a space for patrons to sit inside to enjoy their food while everything is cooked outside on a cart. The format isn't for everyone (#3), but it's right up my alley. Beyond the colorful murals along the interior and spacious seating, this is still very much a dive. The place is open typically at night and the cloud of grease that permeates the room from all the fatty meats being grilled up. The ventilation is questionable and the seating (fold up chairs and plastic tables) is hardly glamorous. I don't know if I'd have it any other way. For some folks, seeing certain taco meats sitting in a pool of lard / fat / questionable liquid might be an eyesore but once the grilling begins it's a new ballgame. I enjoy almost all the meats, whether it's their famous al pastor sitting on a tromp with a pineapple on top, or their variety of cecina, carnitas, cabeza (cheek, mainly), barbacoa, and asada. There's no guarantee of what they'll have on any given night, so I'm usually good with whatever they have available. The charred grill is also the same place for their tortillas, which are also fried in said lard, and give off this smokiness that might not be everyone's cup of tea. I think their barbacoa, which is chivo (#4) style, is really the best thing they have. The meat is incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. It completely encapsulates their namesake in "ricos tacos" as one of their signature items. As always, it is cash only and speaking Spanish is a must. I'm not saying it's the best taqueria in the city, but for late night eats, it's certainly one of ones to beat. __________ (#1) Aka "The Godfather" (#2) Twas another time: https://www.yelp.com/biz/taqueria-el-padrino-salem (#3) Real talk: Most folks in Salem will likely never go to a place like this. While La Carreta de Mi Tierra (#1) has been quietly blowing up the taco street scene in Salem, just…read moreacross the street lies Los Pinos, an older, more traditional taco truck where tastiness and authenticity go hand in hand. Some would say this is the best street taco experience in the city, which is hard to argue, especially when the tacos are this good. Their tacos are around $1.50-$2.00 each, which beat the competition in terms of pricing but I trust this price will catapult in a very short time. Their version of carnitas are stewed and fried to perfection and their lengua / al pastor is fantastic. When available, their fish tacos are worth every dime, though they are a $1 more. It's not all tacos, they also serve a decent variety of burritos, quesadillas, and tortas. They're very good about stuffing every morsel of food into the tortilla / bread, which is abundant in its own right. Do not forget to use as much of their condiments to really enhance the flavor. Thankfully, it's never too busy here and the staff is super friendly. The last time I checked they were still cash only and parking is extremely limited. They've done well to attract a lot of local clientele, many of whom visit the truck during the late hours into the evening. There is some seating with these makeshift tables, but I prefer to take my food to go. When it comes to Los Pinos and their wonderful variety of street inspired food, everyone wins. _________________ (#1) https://www.yelp.com/biz/la-carreta-de-mi-tierra-salem

Great Food, Even Better Company…read more We met up with my wife's son and daughter-in-law for a casual Thursday afternoon lunch. Since she's expecting and had a craving for Mexican food, they picked this spot based on past experiences. We arrived around 2:30 PM, and the place wasn't busy--parking was easy, and we were seated right away. One quick note: the actual name of the restaurant is Casa Los Dos Amigos, not Casamigos as it's listed on Yelp. The restaurant is located in a small strip mall near the intersection of Chemawa Road and River Road, just a couple of miles from the I-5 Chemawa Road exit in Keizer, OR. The staff was friendly and efficient. We were quickly offered drinks, menus, and complimentary chips and salsa--plus a nice touch: a small plate of refried beans. They also let us know the lunch menu ends at 3 PM. The interior is festively decorated with a colorful Mexican theme, and the menu is extensive, offering a wide variety of classic dishes. While catching up and browsing the menu, I went with the chile verde enchiladas, my wife ordered a fajita combo, and they chose a burrito and enchiladas. Our meals arrived promptly and looked fantastic. Everything tasted great, but what really made the experience special was the time spent together. Good food, great service, and even better company--what more could you ask for?
