The call no parent ever wants to receive is that their child is in the hospital especially when you live 4.5 hours away. My son, who is attending college, wasn't feeling well and ended up at Alameda Hospital. On our way to the Bay, I read some reviews about the hospital and started to feel nervous. But I'm here to say that our experience was the complete opposite. The service and care were beyond what I expected from a hospital. My son had a collapsed lung and needed a chest tube. The ICU doctor personally called me and my husband and clearly explained everything that was happening and what they were about to do. He was compassionate, patient, and reassuring. He promised to call us as soon as the procedure was done and he did. What felt like forever, but was really only about an hour, he called back to let us know everything was successful and that our son would be admitted for observation. We arrived at the hospital around 11 p.m. Security initially hesitated to let us in, but once they confirmed where our son was and understood that we had just driven over four hours, they kindly allowed us to go up and see him. Our son stayed in the hospital for three days, and I truly have no complaints and only praise. Every doctor, nurse, and staff member we encountered was kind, understanding, and accommodating. Everything the medical team said they would do, they did with little to no wait time or delay. Even the security personnel at the entrance were friendly and compassionate each day we were there. I am beyond thankful for this hospital and deeply grateful for every employee who showed us such kindness during one of the most frightening moments of our lives. They diagnosed a bowel blockage as an aortic aneurism so they said just wait until your Drs office is open next week. Severe incompetence. Her cardio thoracic surgeon was very upset at such an obvious condition was missed entirely. Basically med school day 1 and they couldn't do it. Not to mention that they also couldn't even find a wheelchair to take my mom inside for about 15 minutes. Really? No wheelchairs at the entrance to the ER? I went to the ER a couple months ago for a medical emergency. I was in extreme discomfort and they had me wait for 5 hours with no access to a bed or a doctor. I ended up leaving and had to go to a different ER the next day to receive the treatment I needed. I don't know if they are understaffed or overcrowded, but it was horrendous experience. The admitting nurse saw the eczema I have on my knuckle (it does look like I punched someone), and asked if I got that from hitting my partner. I tried to explain that it was dry skin and he kind of laughed me off. It was uncomfortable and I was in pain so I just kind of giggled and tried to talk about something else, but I was immediately not interested in continuing the conversation despite I had to in order to be placed in line to see someone. Then fast forward to now, and they are charging me for labs I did not consent to or receive results from. I guess I peed in a cup but when I left I suppose no one said anything to the lab who decided to test it anyway. The customer service on their site was curt and demand that I pay my responsibility despite receiving nothing. So I'm paying for nothing. I guess all in all unless you are bleeding profusely or have literally nowhere else to go, pick any other hospital. read more

Came to Alameda Hospital for my partner to get some labs drawn, and everything went smoothly. The staff were friendly and professional throughout. The phlebotomist had no problems finding the vein. My partner also needed to get an EKG, but unfortunately the department had already closed for the day. What really stood out was how kind and proactive the lab registration staff member was--she went out of her way to call around to other nearby hospitals to see if they could do the EKG. She spent several minutes trying to help us, and it was genuinely appreciated. In the end, we had to go through the emergency room to get the EKG done. The ER waiting room is small but seemed adequate for a hospital of this size. There was a large TV playing sports and natural light coming through open windows, making the space feel more pleasant. Facilities are a bit on the older side but clean. There's also visible security both in the main hospital and the ER, which made us feel safe. The surrounding area felt safe as well, and there was plenty of parking right outside. The nurses, EKG technician, and doctor we interacted with were all friendly and helpful. Had a severe headache, shortness of breath, achy, body, and tightness in my chest. Couldn't get a doctors appointment for a week, so went to the emergency room. That only did I not have to wait very long, but I was given very loving and serious attention to my problem. They gave me an EKG and chest x-ray, took my blood pressure, check my blood, confirmed I did not have Covid and diagnosed me within two hours. I felt loved and taken care of. read more

He was kind, patient, and treated him with dignity--truly setting the standard for what nursing care should be. They didn't listen to any symptoms and straight up refused to treat or attempt to diagnose anything so we had to leave and drive to another hospital to get adequate care during a serious medical crisis. This is a summery of my unfortunate three visits to the hospital. Unfortunate, because nobody wants to go to an emergency room. Typically you see people in pain flowing out the doors, conflicts with take in staff by entitled "I want it right now" individuals, and occasionally bad staff encounters. My experience- I had none of the aforementioned experiences so the three stars are all for the staff and the efficiency. I rarely give 5 stars, that's for positive & memorable experiences. I found a good racial and age mix of staff. There Covit protocol is not intrusive and understandable as to why there are no accompaniments in the back. 4 stars- upon my first visit I knotted what may have been a shift change after getting the prognosis. The troubling thing is that I saw two ER doctors charges on the bill of which one literally just walked into my bed space and asked me "how I was doing" and I never seen him again nor did he issue me any medication. When people are in pain it is hard to say no to "up billing" or know what is being given to you as nessasary or not. That visit; knowing what my case was for being there was, I said no, to three procedures that I know wasn't necessary. The bottom line is that some care in a state of an emergency is better then none. Local- good to know the small city has a hospital. Imagine being in a state of panic and in physical need and instead of driving less then 10 minutes from any point in the city to having to triple that into Oakalnd. If you want to live avoid the ER! I came via ambulance writhing in pain without pants on and was first approached by security with a wand as if I'm some criminal. The no pants bandit screaming in pain (insert eye roll). The ER doctor first misdiagnosed me and only did a CT scan as a precautionary measure. The CT scan showed the real issue. The nursing staff was cold and no sense of urgency. The doctor would come to assess how medication was working when I hadn't been given any because the nurse was so slow. The person coordinating insurance/registration was extremely rude and condescending. In the end they sent me away with pain meds and a task of calling my primary care physician within a week. Within 48 hours, while waiting for my PCP appointment, I went into septic shock. I went to a different ER that actually treated me. I told the new ER what happened at Alameda Hospital and they were floored at the lack of treatment. In that hospital, I went into surgery 15 minutes after arriving. I spent over a week in that hospital because the lack of appropriate care in Alameda Hospital. If you're looking for competent care avoid Alameda Hospital! Tell the EMTs to take you elsewhere. read more

Went to the ER in March 2019, registered with all of my Insurance Information and Personal Information. Had a Doctor exam and an Echo exam that was inconclusive and to talk to my PCP if conditions persist - damn, AH is where my Primary Care Physician told me to go. Well, it's September 2020 and I'm alive thank goodness. However, my BLOOD PRESSURE is rising as I just received a bill for the March 2019 service saying a charge, which is not defined on the bill letter (no invoice #), has been sent to an outside receivables management company contracted for by Alameda Health Systems. Apparently insurance covered a portion and the remainder should have been billed to me by Alameda Health Systems awhile ago. Wow, unaware of this outstanding charge for 1.5 years with no timely invoice sent to my home. Here's where it gets worse, I call the 1-800 number on the outside receivables management September 2020 bill letter to inquire and they tell me I need to call a different 1-800 number. The initial number on the bill letter is for a collection service for Speeding Tickets and not for the Alameda Health Systems. The collection agency can't even get the phone number right.... Huh? Now I get it, AHS either factored (sold the outstanding receivable at a discount) to this collection agency operating under the name of AHS and the agency doesn't have their mess together yet. They sent a barrage of letters out related to unpaid (likely never billed) activity that the Hospital had as outstanding. Now I know why Alameda Hospital is in such a mess. I know it's convenient to have a local ER in Alameda and Alamedeans are periodically asked to pay more in taxes for this convenience, but tax payers should not fund a system that is inefficiently managed. This review is strictly for the EMERGENCY ROOM @ ALAMEDA HOSPITAL. I rarely go to the hospital, but if I do-- i prefer going to Alameda Hospital over, say, highland or Eden or San Leandro. Partly because it's the quicker option- always fast service and seems like a much lower patient volume. The longest I've waited was 45 min at alameda hospital. Once. Most of the time it's 15 min- and I'm right in and out within a reasonable time. They send the meds to whatever pharmacy you choose. Extremely kind & caring nurses and doctors. Not overly dramatic, professional yet understanding, and do their best to get you comfortable. I'm not sure how they are with trauma situations, the most i've had procedure wise-is them draining an abscess. Overall, it's a clean place with competent, caring staff. Would recommend if you have a low level emergency. read more

I visited this medical facility due to concerns about my heart. The initial nurse who took my heart reading was competent and professional. The second nurse was initially helpful but became agitated when I asked her to remove the IV after blood draw, as I only wanted to rule out any serious heart conditions. The doctor who examined me was polite and assured me that they would run some blood tests and take an X-Ray to ensure there were no underlying issues. The X-Ray tech came in a short time later with the mobile X-Ray machine and took the chest X-Ray. The nurse returned some time later. She tossed a stack of papers between my legs, then started removing the tape and IV. She was aggressive and abrupt, making me feel uneasy. Once she had the tape off and IV out she said, "Now get dressed and go home" then turned to walk out. I looked down at the paperwork thinking that I have no idea what was going on with my heart. I pointed at the first thing I seen on the paper which was "Angioedema swelling" and said, "What's this?" She said, "Oh, that's you're allergy. Now get dressed and go home." At that point I knew that I needed to get out of there. Upon reviewing the paperwork once I arrived home, I noticed the Angioedema swelling and reason for visit being listed as a Motor Vehicle Crash was actually for another patient. I'm definitely not going back and asking them about my diagnosis because I don't feel comfortable... Overall, my experience was not satisfactory, and I would never return to this facility. read more

How does Alameda Hospital operate in the ER? 0/5 STARS! Most alarming is discharging me without having a doctor speak to me about my CT scan. Then being told I have to wait to be readmitted for only potentially getting an MRI. I had to ask my nurse, Karen, what the CT scan revealed, she said "your CT scan was 'fine'" as she walked away from me. My discharge summary had the wrong follow up doctor's name and MY CT SCAN WASN'T just "FINE". The instructions said to follow up with my primary care physician so I did, luckily, I was able to find an appointment for 10:20am today. When I arrived at Alameda Hospital it was 5:30am and Frederick took notes on my history and symptoms. Katherine, my nurse, walked me to my exam room. Dr. Yong-Yong Tam had me point to where I was experiencing pain. Unfortunately, switching shifts wasn't very smooth. It didn't seem like Karen or Naz knew what I had told Dr. Tam regarding where I was (am) experiencing pain. No, I wasn't experiencing "chest pain" as noted on the discharge papers - that was WRONG. My CT scan was only ordered to photo my ribs and above. It may have been misinterpreted when I said I was having a hard time breathing. That's fine but WHY NOT TELL ME I HAVE A FRACTURED RIB OR TWO BEFORE DISCHARGING ME FROM ALAMEDA HOSPITAL. I only learned about the fractured rib through my primary care physician who called the ER to get the results from the ER exam/information. I walked out of the hospital crying because I was so frustrated and still in pain after speaking to nurse Naz at the second window. As a former employee of (AHS) Alameda Health System as a supervisor in the Patient Access Department under the leadership of a manager that has micro-management at an all time high with a capital H. Training for the department was done over Zoom with me only seeing the manager maybe 3 or 4 times was horrible and very unprofessional. The amount of unhappy staff members within the department is bad and shameful to say the less. It seems or appear that the higher up leadership is aware but they seem to not care because nothing has been done about it. Even speaking with other people from other departments is was obvious that the Patient Access Department wasn't the only unhappy department within Alameda Hospital. Hopefully with more people coming forward and not being afraid to come forward things will change for the better. If the culture doesn't change for leadership within the organization they will continue to lose good employees and that would be sad. Do better Alameda Health System, just do better. Beyond horrific. The urgent care doctor laughed at me and told me I was "creating a problem". Then told me she "didn't think anything was wrong with me". She told me she was consulting with the person she reports to. After waiting for over 45minutes I walked into the hallway to find her eating and on her cell phone in her office. I've gone to urgent care twice because the never have primary care doctors accepting new patients. Both times I was ridiculed and condescended to. I used to have Google ppo. I know how much better wealthy patients are treated. This place is a great example of criminally abusive behavior towards (who they believe) are poor people. You are treated like an idiot making up false health problems. Insulting, disgusting staff. Avoid. They will belittle and mock you so they can deny care. I've had two relatives who needed to be transferred out of this hospital because we saw that they were not being given proper care. One of the many instances of neglect was not giving my father in law (who is both a diabetic and transplant patient) his antibiotics on THREE different occasions. When questioning the staff, I'm forced to hear a run around of answers. After a week, he looked worse in the care of those at Alameda Hospital than he did prior to being taken there. I, myself, had to be transferred to Alta Bates because of the amount of neglect I experienced after a gallbladder surgery (which included significant internal bleeding caused by mistakes made by the surgeon). Because of their mistakes, I had to spend an additional week and a half in the hospital. I plead with you. If you care for your loved ones, DO NOT BRING THEM HERE. read more

Do not go here!!! I went to the ER in San Diego where I was visiting. 3 days later I came home and needed to go to the ER again as advised to do if needed. This hospital is so old and the people working there all look like they're on something.....Pretty sure one lady was drunk. Regardless, I brought all of my paperwork, tests, lab work here from the ER in SD (as directed by the ER). Alameda insisted on doing all the same things that I just had done 3 days prior and didn't have the equipment for the other tests/exams they wanted to run (thank goodness). I'm told by my insurance Alameda billed a total of $7K while SD billed $800. They literally just ran tests and did everything they could to rack up my bill even though I had all of it done 3 days prior. This place is sketch. They didn't do anything for me except tell me to see a specialist. This place is a joke. read more

I'm currently in the hospital for Covid and have received excellent care. My review would have probably been 1 star had I done this review back in 2013 when I had foot surgery here. That experience was all bad. I heard that the hospital had turned into a County hospital which would have made sense for the poor service, but then a few years later heard that that was not true. So I was concerned coming here this time around but in my condition I didn't really have much choice, I was fading fast. But I'm glad I did come as being a smaller hospital. I got excellent care from both doctors and nurses. I was actually able to sleep because I wasn't near the nurses station where they tend to congregate and chat all night long. it seems that they made the effort to check my vitals before bedtime and again early morning, so as not to disrupt sleep. Of course, having Covid, I'm sure they didn't want to come in my room too much anyway, which is understandable and totally fine with me. The food was tolerable, the bed was comfortable, and the staff was generally very nice. I get discharged today so they've already had me fill out some paperwork. We'll see how long it takes to actually get out the door but I'm in no hurry, not going anywhere but to lock myself up in my room. I will mention that it's an older hospital so the rooms aren't fancy, no view from my room at least and TV service a bit spotty and limited. Oh and I also had a case manager call me to follow up on any necessary follow up appointments, offering to call my primary and checking my pharmacy needs. She said she'd be following up on me for 30 days. I'm not sure if this is through the hospital in general or my insurance but I thought it was a kind service to provide. I was there on 10/19 for high blood pressure (261/123). The nurse said high blood pressure is not a reason to visit the emergency room. She put down a bp of 150 on the discharge papers (even though she had just taken it at 224) and said the doctors are busy and have no time for you. They will not provide any medication. Go home and call your regular doctor tomorrow. Going here is limited to life or death emergencies, otherwise they will just insult you for showing up and send you home untreated. read more

The billing department of this hospital is a den of thieves who charge you for fake services, do a fake review upon a tedious and painful review request process from the 1980s and stick you with an astronomical bill that has nothing to do with the published charge master. They charged me $2400 for a 5 min visit and a brief flu test. This hospital should be shut down for malpractice and thievery. They send a response after 4 months with fake numbers of another hospital's contact number. Shame on them. Nancy Cuevas who is a Patient Account Supervisor is one of these condemnable people in the billing department.
