This is a most unfortunate review, because it is not about Dr. West himself, but about his front…read moreoffice staff. Our son went to see our dentist, Dr. Hunter (5 Star) for a teeth cleaning, and since he is 17 years old did a panoramic X-ray to check on his wisdom teeth. Yes, they need to come out. He referred us to two oral surgeons and for comfort we made an appointment with a third. First up, the referred Dr. West. Making an appointment was easy and timely. Now we know his wisdom teeth need to come out and have done and paid for the X-rays. Just want to get an estimate and meet the Doctor who will be taking out our sons wisdom teeth. Since this does require sedation, which is always a little scary, especially when being done for the first time and no one is sure how the child will respond, we want to feel confident in the oral surgeon doing the job. The day of the appointment arrives, we go to the office and sign the customary paperwork. No one has yet to mention that there would be a Consult fee to get the estimate. It is not identified in the Financial policy we signed. The X-ray paid for and sent via email to Dr. West is unavailable because their system is down that day. They decide they need to do another Panoramic X-ray because of this and charge us $106. Since, it is their fault, they make a huge production on how we should be so thankful for this and they will not charge us the extra fee for having the X-ray done AGAIN. A FREE DOSE OF EXTRA RADIATION for our son is what we are supposed to be thankful for. :( Oh, guess what, he needs his wisdom teeth removed. Fine, we are getting ready to leave, and the receptionist, says that will be a New Patient Exam and Panoramic X-Ray fee of $168. Now, we have to explain, we already paid for the X-ray with the dentist, which he emailed over, and your system being down could not retrieve. New Patient Exam fee of $62? Where was that written and disclosed? Blah, Blah, Blah, she precedes to argue with us. Being nickeled and dimed for a procedure that will cost quite a bit is never comfortable. Of course, the $62 means the world to the receptionist and the office. In trying to understand how we missed this, Jamie and Katie are very rude with my husband and I in trying to understand their billing practices. Apparently, this happens quite often. Needless to say, we went with another oral surgeon, Dr. Edmond Reed, also referred by Dr. Hunter, and he does not charge a consult or other fees $0 and has great reviews. Also, the third oral surgeon we went to did not charge any fees $0. If a professional charges consult fees, they need to clearly identify them up front when the appointment is being made. Not at the end or in a mailed billing statement.

As I left I told the receptionist that if ever they needed testimonials to call me because this was a wonderful experience! I know, who says that, right? It's all 4 wisdom teeth!!! But seriously, the office is clean and modern, the staff is professional and friendly, and the doctor did an amazing job! I had zero complications and everything went sooo smoothly. From the initial consultation, to scheduling for the surgery, to the anesthesia, the actual surgery, the follow up phone call from Dr. Young, and the follow up appointment, everything was handled so very well. As another reviewer stated, they gave me the gas, they put in my IV, and then asked if I was comfortable. I answered yes and the next thing I knew, the surgery was complete. I will definitely recommend this office to everyone who has need and I'm grateful that my dentist Dr. Kemp recommended them to me!

I cannot speak for the others dental practitioners in this practice, since I have not seen anyone but Dr, Clark, but I would bet that they are equally great. Words don't do justice to how wonderful I feel my two experiences with implants have been for me here. Most everyone, I would guess, hates dental work of any kind, but my experience with getting my implants was painless both during and after. However, I did get IV general/sedation, and I am glad that I can afford to do that. In addition, I was clearly impressed with the call I got from Dr, Clark the evening of my procedure to check on me. I mean, how many doctors/dentists do that anymore, if they ever did. Costs are discussed with you and spelled out in writing after your initial evaluation, so there are no surprises about what your costs will be for each and every thing going forward. All personnel in this practice are friendly, welcoming and professional. NancyB

I slept on it - and decided to share my experience here…read more I visited this practice yesterday because I have an unusual issue. I bit my tongue a few weeks ago and have developed an infection beneath the bite. It has bothered me for a quite a while and I was incredibly anxious and scared about seeing a physician about it. I have put it off because I was really, really nervous about it - and this experience did nothing to reduce my anxiety. It made me feel horrible actually. The younger of the two docs was in the room with me for about 4 minutes - looked at my situation and made a few, "oh, gosh", and "oh wow" remarks (this made me feel great, Dr. Thomas!) and then sat down and told me he had never seen anything like that and had no idea how to treat it. Let me repeat - a trained oral surgeon had no idea what he was looking at and had no idea what to do. I found reams of medical literature and documentation that explained it quite clearly and I did not even go to medical school. I called a physician friend at Vandy, who said I should have left with an Rx for antibiotics, at the very least, and a referral to a doc who could help me. He suggested I make an appointment with Vanderbilt Otolaryngology. Back to my story. Instead, this doc said he would consult the more senior physician and the pathologist about it and said that perhaps medicine would be more effective than surgery. He then left the room. No kidding, 20 seconds later, the aid returned to tell me I was all set and that front desk lady would be happy to take my money. I was charged $105 for 4 minutes and a physician who never returned with those recommendations, never made an effort to make me feel at ease, didn't suggest what I do as an alternative, didn't refer me to another physician, didn't prescribe meds, but did feel perfectly comfortable charging me anyway. I went to the car and cried for about 10 minutes. I took a breath and called Vanderbilt Otolaryngology and got an appointment later in the week. The scheduler said they see bites and abscesses all the time - I can see I should have gone straight to the best institution in the city rather than bother with a suburban, private, profit-driven practice. Better docs. Better care. No humiliation on the side. Lesson learned.

The entire experience was easy peasy. I went in for a tooth extraction. The medication options,…read morecost and expectation were all explained in great detail. I choose the option 2.
