In reference to the Airway Light Sculptures, I heard someone once say, "I'm an architect, and I don't get it." While it would be nice, being an architect doesn't mean you actually have an appreciation or an eye for art. And while some might argue that an architect is an artist, I'm going to disagree and say what many have said before me (just talking in a general sense... not past reviews), art shouldn't have a purpose. And the Airway Light Sculptures have no purpose which is why we can enjoy them. Every time you drive past them, you can enjoy them because they have nothing else to be doing... they don't need to support a building to stand, they don't have to move in order to be viewed, they don't need to be lit up in order to be seen... they don't NEED to do anything.
The crazy thing about the ALS is, unless you have a flat tire, you probably will only view it for mere seconds and depending on the time of day it may be white, yellow, blue, red, or any number of colors and it might be moving. Is it a kinetic instillation? Yes and no depending on how you define that. The entire installation doesn't move and it doesn't always move, but on another level (a science-y level) when it does move, it's harnessing wind energy which in turn powers the instillation which allows it to light up at night.
As a whole, I love what El Paso is doing in regards to bringing art onto the highway. Not only does it make the highway beautiful, but it makes the city beautiful. It showcases the different talented artists we have in the area to anyone passing through and it's in line with what I'm seeing happening in so many other areas of the city like Downtown. read more
