Back when I used to live in Davis and Sacramento, this station was an introduction to so many…read moreclassical music pieces I was not yet familiar with. If I was reviewing this station then, I might've given 5-star. About a year ago, I got to listen to this station online. Gone were interesting contemporary pieces. Gone were potential favorites that would be played all the way through instead of one movement. At least their varieties were better than KDFC (shudder), such that I get to still discover pieces that I would be interested investigating more often. And once going outside Bay Area, you can pick up this station relatively easily. That helps a lot.

When I used to live in Antioch, this was the only classical station I could pick up. I started…read morelistening due to my excessive time staying in my bedroom, reading books for school. I found I couldn't concentrate well listening to more modern music, so classical was better than just pure silence. The more I listened, the more I grew to love the variety they played and the stories behind each piece. I even would stick an audio tape in overnight so I could squeeze in some pieces to listen to when I woke. I almost didn't want to miss out on a beautiful piece of music (this was before I owned a computer around 1998-99) I also grew to love the additional programs such as From the Top, Friday Night at the Opera and A Prairie Home Companion. Each were entertaining and fun to listen to. I soon realized I was turning into a bit of a classical geek. I could recognize pieces and their names pretty quickly. I remember hearing Modest Mussorgky's Pictures at an Exhibition about 8 years ago and it was while I was painting a beautiful scene of Venice. I will always associate that piece with that moment. It's too bad kids can't be exposed to this more, now that our lives are so frenzied with technology. I hope KXPR stays around for much longer so maybe someday my own children can experience beautiful pieces of music.

I have a few favorite radio stations that I constantly switch back and forth to depending on what I want to hear. My old school tastes have focused my preferences to soul, R&B, disco, some heavy metal and rock. But after listening to this station more and more, I have found another favorite to loyally tune in to! I can't believe the amount of music this station plays that I had almost forgotten about, and I was once a fan of, back in the day! It seems like every other song brings back a fond memory of a younger and happier time I once lived. This really reinforces the fact of how strongly music was a part of my life in my younger years. They play so much variety from the 70's, 80's and 90's, that reminiscing has now become a strong, influential part of my present, yet aging life...... It's not so bad to think I'm still young at heart anyway! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5efcY2EUxV4
