As an Emerald member of the oneworld alliance, I have always received complimentary seat selection on partner airlines--until my recent experience with Royal Jordanian. I paid $140 for two seats that were clearly shown as a two-seat row. When my wife and I boarded, we discovered the row actually had three seats. Nobody pays extra for a middle seat.
My assigned seat, K6, had no cushion whatsoever. I had to stack pillows and blankets to avoid severe back pain. The customer service experience was equally frustrating. I called the number provided, was transferred repeatedly between Detroit, Chicago, and other offices, and received conflicting information each time. One representative directed me to another number, who then sent me back to the original one. Eventually I got the information I needed, but only after an exhausting loop of transfers.
Onboard, the plane itself was attractive and most flight attendants worked hard. Unfortunately, many passengers behaved poorly--loud, rude, and inconsiderate--and cabin cleanliness was unacceptable. The lavatories were dirty after only a couple hours in the air: urine on the floor and clogged sinks. For a carrier of this profile, that level of sanitation is shocking.
This was the most incompetent and disappointing airline experience I've had. I will not fly Royal Jordanian again. I would rather pay more or take a longer route than endure this service again.
