My son has attended Crescent since Pre-K. I had a few school choices in mind, but after reading…read morereviews this is home. My child and I both love it; from the, teachers, upper staff, helping staff, the students, etc... Crescent sets your scholars up for success. Let me brag a little about a special teacher, Mrs. Norwood-Harris. She's amazing, I could not have asked for a better teacher. She cares for her students and not just there for a paycheck. She goes above and beyond! Thank you all for what you do :)

The first graders have their own trailer with over 6 classrooms, just for 1st graders. I thought this was great for children to develop social skills and building relationships with other students. Crescent Academy offers extracurricular activities to include girl's scouts, boy scouts, music, soccer, etc. In addition to activities, they also offer academic assistance for students that may be falling below their academic level. I gather from staff's involvement with the programs they offer, they really care. As it relates to the staff building relationships with the parents, I do see an effort being made since the last time I wrote my review. My daughter participated in the girls scout program, she was a daisy. She had so much fun and there were so many events, trips and meetings to keep the girls just as engaged. She will definitely be participating next year as a brownie. Overall, I feel confident in the academic program Crescent Academy offers. We are looking forward to next year.

As a social worker I spend a lot of time going in and out of Detroit public schools. I see some…read morethings that really make the hair stand up on the back of my neck. And then, occassionally, I see a few gems. This school is one of those gems. UPA and University Prep High School both use project-based learning so that kids can really focus on the things that interest them. All students do regular internships which are supervised by a local field instructor and a teacher (they get school credit for the internship). This gives them a chance to refine their interests and get exposed to the work world. But, a few things to note. UPA is a bit overrated in terms of it's academic rigor. Although it is a world above most of the DPS schools I visit, not all graduates are going to be prepared to start at a mid-range or top tier university. I've seen kids advanced from grade to grade (particularly in math) who really don't have the basics down well enough. And, another important thing to remember about UPA is that their teaching approach does not work for all students. Some kids need a lot more structure and will flounder when given so much academic freedom and responsibility for their own education. Parents of UPA students need to stay in close contact with the teachers and review their student's work on a very regular basis. Overall, this is a great school. The campus is well laid out, the rooms are clean and things are in repair. There's not a lot of violence. The teachers and staff are very good at communicating with parents and they take a personal interest in their students.

They require the kids to do an expedition project every month which is a good thing for kids to do in my opinion helps them to discover something new. I have twin 17-yr-old boys who have gone through the West Bloomfield school system for their entire…read moreeducation. Sure there were some rough patches now and then with a few teachers but overall I am very satisfied with the outcome. One of the twins has Asperger's/ADHD (diagnosed and medicated). This district and especially the High School has an amazing support staff. They shepherded him through all the pitfalls HS can present which are exacerbated for a kid like him. Not only is he going to graduate, but after years of struggling with poor grades it looks like he will be in the 3.5GPA range. Yes he worked VERY hard to make that happen and NO they did not just push him through with good grades in order to move him along. The non-special needs twin went through their engineering program carrying a 4.2GPA. However, he discovered he has a knack for business due to their DECA program. He realized how much more he enjoys that realm rather than engineering thus saving us lots of wasted money on the wrong kind of college courses. Lastly, the principal, Mr. Watson, is the real deal. A straight-talking no-nonsense, common sense kinda guy. He has the respect of teachers, students and parents. No easy feat in today's world of everyone looking for a reason to be offended. All in all I highly recommend this school district.
