You should think of it more as a fitness class (that's what roughly 40 min of each class is devoted to) that teaches some self-defense techniques rather than a martial arts class, especially since it's located in a gym. Super sketchy when it comes to money though. The instructors will use high pressure sales tactics to get you to buy all the equipment through Dan, the owner, even if you're only interested in classes that don't require/need boxing gloves, thigh guards, etc. Really long lead time to cancel recurring billing (over thirty days) and no flexibility from Dan either. For your money, if you're not in the downtown core (and even if you are and can afford a longer travel time) go somewhere else.

This is a great way to get into capoeira since they start you off with the very basics at a manageable pace. The instructors are fantastic and are very good at helping everyone participate and learn the moves. The Intro class runs for 4 week, twice a week on Tuesday and Thursdays, after which students naturally progress into the beginners class with the rest of the students. Their hours are very flexible with classes running 5 days a week, with Maculele dance and music classes on Saturdays. I really love that in almost every class we get to learn all the facets of capoeira from the moves, to the music, the singing and the dancing. Not to mention the crazy workout you get doing it all. I don't think I've ever sweat as much in my life! The facility is very well equipped with everything that's needed to learn capoeira: A large studio, all the pads, mats and equipment, lots of musical instruments and fantastic teachers. I loved it so much that I've signed up for at least a year. Thank you Axe Capoeira! Salve!

I've been training here for 7 years and find Sensei's approach respectful, professional and works very well. Students are pushed to work hard and everyone progresses at their own pace. The atmosphere is welcoming but there's no place here for fooling around. You come to train. This style of karate is Gojo Ryu and focuses on kata. Sparring is a part of it but not the prime focus. We all have to work tomorrow so no one here is out to hurt you while sparring (like other dojos) in the city. Karate is not about fighting. Kids are expected to participate and show respect to Sensei and the other senior belts - just like they should. It's hard for some kids because they're not expected to show respect at home or at school. Sensei is often heard asking parents to not tell their kids to have fun, but rather to work hard. That very succinctly sums it up. HPMA has been here for 26 years (I'm not aware of any dojo in the city that has been in one location for that long) and going strong so I think bad reviewers here on yelp aren't seeing the whole picture. If you're interested come and try a class for yourself.

Rafi is by far the best instructor, I've met. Not only does he have the necessary experience and background coming from the IDF (Isrealy Defense Force) but he cares about teaching his customers. He also has a heart of gold. He is great with kids and adults alike. If you sometimes feel scared walking down the street at night, Krav Maga is the martial art for you, if Krav Maga is the art for you then Rafi is the instructor to teach you.

This place mostly focuses on Krav Maga and conditioning and honestly doesn't look like much from the outside. I hesitated a few times before taking a class a few months ago just because of how it looked. Signage is pretty dim and it's in an industrial building. The inside is ok, but it is lacking a true change room (i.e. no lockers) but they have a washroom. I ended up taking the Adult Foundation class and it was more of a boot camp/cross fit type class with some random punching and kicking in between. It was a great workout however, I wasn't a fan that they asked us to start kicking and punching bags without any proper technique. They might have gone over this in the next class, but I was way too tired to do a class afterwards. Verdict: From the one class I took, it was amazing conditioning, and the instructors and students are friendly. My only recommendation would be to make the class schedule more clear and let people know whether it is a conditioning or technique. I might try it again next year but I definitely would have preferred more focus on technique.

I've been doing Krav Maga and fitness training at TFF for about a year and a half now, and I…read moreabsolutely love it!! I initially went to TFF because I was SO bored of the gym, and I am beyond happy that I made the switch. My favourite thing about TFF is the community. Rob, the owner, is so passionate about Krav Maga that it's impossible not to get excited about it, too! The other instructors are all fantastic as well - they know what they're doing, they care about their students, and they all have their own *special* ways to motivate you to push yourself to improve your techniques as well as your fitness level. My fellow students are also great - encouraging, patient, and hard-working. All in all, it's a very inspiring group of people :) Krav Maga is essentially a self-defense system that everyone can learn. And while you're learning it, you'll get into great shape. The classes are different each time, so it's easy for your mind and body to stay engaged. I'm not gonna lie, the classes can be very intense, but the stress training helps prepare you mentally and physically should you actually have to use Krav in a real life self-defense situation. The other bonus of Krav Maga at TFF is that you jump right in - during my very first class I learned how to defend against a choke from the front while being pushed up against a wall. Awesome. In addition to the regular classes (Krav Maga, Fitness, Yoga...), TFF offers intensive seminars focused on things like knife/stick defenses, gun defenses, and women's self-defense. I've attended both the knife/stick and gun seminars, and they were really interesting and a lot of fun! I could go on an on about how great TFF is, but it'd definitely be way more exciting to just take advantage of the free day pass and find out for yourself! Stay safe :)

I've done Aiki Jiujitsu, Hapkido and some other stuff, but I was looking for something more practical and that would really get me in shape. I got more than what I expected! Going in, you get greeted by their great and extremely attentive staff. Seriously, the instructors are the best part. They're really welcoming, but know how to push you and are keen. They are quick to notice when your technique is off and will correct you. Obviously, you'd expect this to some degree at any school, but they are more on the ball about it than other schools, and it helps that they have multiple instructors on hand per class. The facility is very clean and is well equipped. They have weights, heavy bags, focus bags and other protective gear. All the gear is in great condition despite the punishment they get on a daily basis. Their classes are a great workout and are very practical. There are no fancy kicks or punches or anything like that, they're just simple moves devised to be effective. Their situational attacks and counterattacks are realistic and useful. The classes go at a great pace, and they have specialized classes to develop certain skills (fitness, combative striking, etc.). Let me tell you: Nothing could have prepared me for their Fitness class. That was the most intense fitness class I've ever taken in my life. It was gruelling, effective, and fun. Despite aching all over for the next few days, I still can't wait to go back :D They also have seminars, like women's self-defense (which was awesome), knife and gun seminars, etc. Be warned that it's not some laid-back place where you can get away doing half the work. You should be there because you want to train. That's the environment, and all other class members are diligent and work with you to improve. tl;dr: I've been to few schools before, and this has the best instructors, facility, environment and classes.

That's what I was first reminded of when I first signed up my son here. Master Kang and his instructors motivated the kids and cared about making them better. Shortly thereafter, my older son (who initially swore he had no interest in martial arts because they make you do push ups and doing the same thing over and over again was hard and annoying) asked to join his brother for classes. Being heavier set and having quit multiple other martial arts training before, we didn't expect him to last more than a month but we proceeded. In a couple of months, not only was he still taking classes with his brother but he is even more engaged to do so. His kick height has doubled where it was before, his confidence has increased, he's more respectful and he's pushing himself harder and I credit the instructors and Masters for this. Seeing both my kids' improvements, my husband and I decided to sign up and learn with our children and unlike what we initially feared, we feel quite at home and Master Kang gave us the opportunity to take part in something important to our kids which became important to us too. We now all challenge and encourage each other to do better and I can't say any other martial arts gym have ever had our entire family as engaged as Master Kang's! Try it for yourself!!
