I think the church…read moreis like a parachurch/conference facility/prayer room for those who have membership elsewhere. And it's probably great for that. You can get on their mailing list for upcoming conferences. But while actually attending there on Sundays (about 3-4 in a row), my experience wasn't great. In fairness, it was during the summer, when attendance is low due to people on vacation. Jackie Tyre, the prophet/pastor, was there only there about half the time. Visiting "prophets" came in to speak to us while she was gone. One particular "prophet" was very full of himself and talked about all that God had done for him, like getting him a beautiful wife (after his first died) and a nice house and car. These were apparently gifts from generous supporters. He made his new wife come up and raved about how gorgeous she was compared to how ugly he was (typical husband-to-fellow-men verbiage, but she really was attractive). She seemed fairly mortified to be in the spotlight like that. The congregation was mostly older ladies , alone, in their late 60s and early 70s (and a few families of various age), but raving about his beautiful new wife to a crowd with mostly widows and divorced women seemed to lack situational awareness. There was no spiritual tie in such as, "Maybe you feel overlooked by the world, but God adores you much more than I adore her," which would have been an easy way to encourage us all, even if we've been abandoned by a spouse (I haven't) or feel overlooked (most of us do at times). There was no ministry time. He and his wife disappeared immediately after the service and were only available in another room where they were selling their books. While I made an effort to connect with the congregation, I didn't find them very friendly. This is very typical in Atlanta metro, but still worth mentioning. Someone later told me attendance is better when bigger name prophets (like Dutch Sheets) visit. I should note, the room is huge and laid out so that it's very long (not wide and welcoming). The congregation on Sundays only filled about 1/6 of the space. Maybe people were skipping because they knew Jackie was out and random "prophets" like this self-focused guy were coming. I've also been told (after giving up on the church) that people are more friendly on ministry training night (Tuesday, I think).

I feel a little strange "reviewing" my church. So, rather than "review" it, I am going to point…read moreout the things you will find at Redeemer. Clearly, I like this church or else it wouldn't be my church! Redeemer is a big church - it has a very sizeable congregation and it is expanding. It is not necessarily a church where you will get to know everyone else who is a member unless you really get involved in lots of activities. Even then, you won't know everyone. I like this aspect because you can choose your level of involvement - sometimes you just want to lay low and blend in and sometimes you want to really get involved. If you do choose to really get involved, there are many opportunities. They have a lot of mid-week events, lunches after church on Sunday, young adult groups, youth groups, family activities and lots of music programs. The people here are very nice even if it is a little overwhelming at first because it is such a large congregation. But, you can choose the activities you want to do and control your level of involvement and most certainly meet some nice people. Their music is pretty impressive. There are several different choral groups and often have soloists, as well, who are extremely talented. They also have a very impressive pipe organ and a wonderful organist. It is enjoyable to listen to the music during one of the traditional or jazz services. They have two traditional services on Sunday mornings and one more casual jazz service. All of these services will offer Communion on the first and third Sundays of the month but the jazz service has a less rigidly structured format and more contemporary music (it's also a shorter service). Aesthetically speaking, this is a beautiful church. I love older churches (as opposed to new modern ones) and this one is really pretty - high vault, lots of wood, gorgeous stained-glass windows. There are many programs for kids including Sunday school and vacation Bible school in the summer. The church also supports several missionary activities as well as a community food outreach and Habitat for Humanity. The head pastor sends out weekly email communications with a devotion and a description of the sermon and events on the upcoming Sunday. And, as opposed to a lot of other "church food" that I have experienced in my lifetime, the food at Redeemer is really good (and they have a smorgasbord of breakfast snacks and coffee on Sunday). They also have new member classes starting all the time so if you come here and like it, you can be on track to become a member in no time at all. The church is located right on Peachtree in Midtown so it's very convenient for the in-town folks.
