I did an intensive research process to discover this daycare -- visited 5 in this area and called every single one in Chapel Hill region. This was hands down the best one. Community: The daycare is a co-op model, which means that parents are asked to volunteer to help with small projects and that the profits they earn go back to help fund the education of their caretakers. I think this really makes a difference for feeling like you are paying and investing in a community, rather than a corporation. Lower ratios: most daycares go with what the state mandates - 1:5 for babies, 1:6 for 1-2 year olds, and 1:10 for 2-3 year olds. Coming from another state; this is just abysmal. They start at 1:3 and then do 1:6 for 2-3 year olds. Anyone who has been in a daycare room when all the kids are there knows that this should really be the max. Price: it's a bit more costly than other daycares in the area, but it's worth it in my opinion. They do accept vouchers so you can look into that if you need. Location: maybe from a lot of people, but southern village is a great place. The kids can go on field trips to the huge park or this weaver street. Outdoor play: They do a lot of it and are very diligent about bug spray and sunscreen. They have a wonderful play yard with plenty of room, shade, and toys. They do water play in the summer twice a week. Potty training: they are very supportive with potty training and will sit your child on the potty every 30 minutes if that's what's needed. Drop off/pick up: not sure the earliest time you can drop off - maybe 7 or 730? Latest pick up is 530. Discipline/style: they are warm and gentle, but also good at enforcing boundaries. I've seen them engaging in more gentle methods like making positive suggestions for alternatives rather than just saying no. The structured scheduled helps kids know that putting away toys, sitting down at meals, washing hands, and going potty every hour are non negotiables.

Thankfully, CHDCC went above and beyond to welcome my daughter to the school and to meet her needs (and mine!) during that first week. Throughout our time at CHDCC, my husband and I have been incredibly impressed by the quality of the teachers and staff. Our center in D.C. had frequent staff turn-over and it has been such a gift to watch our daughter grow and thrive with a consistent, experienced early childhood professional. This teacher magically potty-trained our daughter in the first two months at school and supported her social, emotional, and cognitive growth each day. We were lucky enough to loop with her from the 2 year-old to the 3 year-old room, making for another smooth transition this year. Everyone at the center is warm and welcoming and I am always blown away by the fact that every adult in the building knows my daughter by name and looks out for her well-being. I am a huge fan of the play-based learning that takes place at CHDCC and love how her teacher differentiates instruction to cater to both the abilities and the interests of each child. I would highly recommend CHDCC to other parents and plan to enroll our second child in the infant room this year.

She…read moreis by far the youngest baby in her class; her classmates are all over a year old, and move up to a classroom for older babies next month, and then Greer will be all alone, so please send new friends for her to play with! I cannot bestow enough praise on Indigo. Last summer, my husband and I toured a few daycare centers, and Indigo blew away the competition, as far as we were concerned. The school practices the Montessori philosophy, which fosters a loving environment where children can grow and learn at their own pace, allowing them to spend extra time on the activities that interest them most. I found this much more attractive than your average (or above-average or even excellent) state-licensed daycare center (and I used to work at one several years ago, so I have an insider's knowledge), where the state's early childhood curriculum---and not necessarily the child's strengths and interests---rule the school. The director and teachers are loving and capable, and there is very little staffing turnover, unlike at the daycare center where I used to work, where conditions were unpleasant, and we teachers were rarely allowed to call in sick. I recall, in the short year that I worked there, nearly everyone---adults and children included---having strep throat, myself as well, and I am rarely sick. When Greer first started, her teacher, Ms. Michelle, was out sick for two days. You might think, eeks!, the teacher's sick!, but I considered this a very positive statement about the working environment at Indigo. If you're sick, stay home, get better, then come love on these kids. I think that's fantastic. Indigo Montessori and Wonderland Enrichment Arts are two separate entities that are located in the same historic building near Brightleaf Square in downtown Durham, that function as one. Wonderland operates from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., then it's Indigo from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. (which is when I pick up my bebeh), then Wonderland again from 1:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. These four-hour-or-less blocks allow Indigo and Wonderland to function with needing state accreditation, which means more freedom in their curriculum and lower costs and a more flexible schedule for parents and their kids. I drop my baby Greer off at Wonderland at 8:00 a.m., then pick her up from Indigo at 1:30 p.m. (I then work from home until 5:00 p.m.). In the summer (June through August), Indigo is closed, and Wonderland operates its own summer camp, with full or half day options.

In our opinion the treatment was discriminatory from a racial, ethnic, and gender standpoint. We do not believe that this school fosters the level of "inclusion" that they proclaim. Teacher Kim was lovely and kind and our daughter loved going to school and being part of the FPS community. Our experience with our oldest was the complete opposite. He was a 5day friend in Teacher Hannah's gathering and his experience was awful. He's neurodivergent and in therapy to support sensory sensitivities. We proactively offered support to his teacher before school even started. Our therapists observed his class on four separate occasions and raised their own concerns about what they saw. The classroom management was nonexistent and our son was ignored often, leading to dysregulation. At one point, he went outside unsupervised and at another point, he was wandering the hall when I overheard a child ask where he'd gone. His teacher responded, "I don't know and I don't care." Ultimately, we decided to withdraw him from FPS because they are ill-equipped to care for a neurodivergent child and his teacher called him bad to his face. We also withdrew our daughter because it wasn't the right place for our family. Our son has been processing his experience at FPS in play therapy and internalized quite a bit of shame during his three months as an FPS student. We're still very angry at his treatment. We switched our son to a local public school in a mainstream classroom. He's been there for more than two months now. He's had zero incidents of dysregulation. His teachers tell us that he's calm and consistently able to self-regulate. Every issue FPS blamed on him completely disappeared in his new environment, which leads us to conclude he was never the problem and that his teacher was the issue. Because of their treatment of our son, we cannot recommend FPS to any family, especially if you have a child who is neurodivergent.

Their curriculum can easily be tailored to the child so that if they're using an item to teach a lesson and your child's not interested, they can easily substitute something else that your child is interested in. The director and the teachers are fully involved and really seem to care about the children. They have wonderful programs in addition to the regular preschool activities for both the children and the parents. They stayed open late for a Zumba lesson and party for the kids and they've also done "Parents' Night Out" where they've stayed open late and had a get together for the children so the parents can have some time to themselves. I have been extremely impressed with how committed to the children and their education the teachers and director have been and fully recommend Childcare Network #58.

Every organization will have administrative snafus on occasion. Our daughter has been going to the school for only a little over a month, so we can't comment on the results but we can say that the staff has been most helpful in seeing to our needs. They have been flexible with appointment times and the weekly therapy sessions for the parents have been invaluable to help us understand where our daughter is coming from when she acts up. Our daughter was originally referred to the Bridges school, run by Wake County, after having behavior problems in her regular elementary school. The Bridges is a good program but it's based heavily on CBT where there are daily point sheets, detailed records, automatic level drops that the children can't make up for certain behavior and time ins and time outs. This works for many kids, but with our daughter it felt like she was being judged all the time and with the automatic level drops she would have no incentive to behave the rest of the day. It felt very rigid with no flexibility in working with the children. So after a year at Bridges, it was time to look at other options. At Lucy Daniels they are very flexible with the children and come from a position of compassion to work with the children to help them understand and overcome their emotional challenges. There is no judgement, giving the child the space they need to figure things out. This does not mean they get out of learning responsibilities but it is done with patience and understanding and support. For some children the Bridges system works, for others, Lucy Daniels. For us, we feel that Lucy Daniels is the place for our daughter. There is regular contact with the teachers to discuss the goings on in the classroom which helps keep us informed with how we can support her at home. Would definitely recommend Lucy Daniels to others.

My son has his own weekly therapy sessions as part of his support within the school, as do my husband and myself so that we are all aligned for his care and needs. The teachers have been creative and supportive of him throughout his time at Lucy Daniels. Throughout his entire time at the school the focus has been on meeting his needs where he is at, while giving him the opportunities to grow. I was honestly so surprised by some of the other reviews I've read here. We have relied on the support Lucy Daniels has provided us and our son for years and I really don't think he would have thrived as much as he has without Lucy Daniels.
