I first found Josh on Instagram, I wanted him to do a extension to my tramp stamp so that it wouldn't be a tramp stamp anymore. I did a tribal up my back and down my thigh. He initially worked on me at his old tattoo shop and I've been going back to him consistently since and followed him to his new owned tattoo studio. LOCATION: In the old Arakawa's in Waipahu, on Waipahu Depot Street, inside, upstairs. PARKING: Lots of parking inside of the parking lot, otherwise there is street parking or parking across the street by the farmers market. COST: Depends on what you're getting. Go in for a consultation. DECOR: So, his tattoo shop is SICK! The walls are red and their furniture is black. Everything is clean and spacious. Lots of things to look at as you're getting inked. I've had a very sentimental tattoo done here twice. One was done before COVID shut everything down and it was done by Kala. He was very professional and patient with how important this particular tattoo meant to me. He was very welcoming and I believe he could feel my anxious vibe so he was talking me through the whole process about anything and everything; which alleviated my anxiety. Recently, I l took my son in for his first tattoo with another artist. I rather not mention the artists' name because he does legitimately good work, BUT I had hope my son would experience the same welcoming and friendly approach as I did with Kala with this other artist. Unfortunately, that was not the case which I kept giving the artist the benefit of the doubt. I paid the deposit a month prior for a specific time and the artist texted me an hour before the scheduled time to move it another hour. Cool. No big deal. Life happens! Then when that hour was coming up...my son and I were in the car and the artist had texted again to lmk that he needed another 10 mins. I felt bad because we were already on our way there and didn't want to show up and add pressure to the artist to prep. The interaction we had with the artist was sub-par. I don't expect the artist to show the same excitement or feelings as my son and I did on that day, but my son really put a lot of thought into his piece as it was a sentimental one and his very first tattoo! He barely spoke to us. Made us wait; no biggie. But only interacted with us if he had to. My son was both excited and nervous and I was hoping the artist would recognize that. He didn't talk to my son but once to ask if he was ok, but other than that no other interaction. So, I was pretty disappointed with his professionalism and his overall demeanor he was giving us was he was doing US a favor being there. Another blow of disappointment. I even attempted to initiate small talk; only to end up with closed answered responses. Made the whole experience awkward. I am all for supporting local small businesses and most importantly artist that are good at what they do! But even my son felt like the artist seemed annoyed with him during the process which honestly made me upset when we left. I wanted this to be a great first experience for my son and just the vibe we got from the artist was terrible. We didn't act rude and we respected his request to extend the time out to meet him at the shop. So I don't understand what his deal was that afternoon? I let this brew for a few days, but it needs to be said. I hate the fact that I'm only giving two stars, but I held this shop in such high regard based off my experience with kala who is awesome. I may have to find another shop if I do decide to get another piece done...which sucks...but i honestly felt let down by this artist and his lack of interaction with us. Even through the awkward session. I paid the amount requested and STILL gave this artist a good tip! Ugh! Im regretting it now! Again, won't state which artist, but I pray no one experiences what my poor son had to go through. read more

My honor roll, hardworking, and amazing teen daughter wanted a baby bear tattoo in honor of my mom who calls her baby bear. The only person I trusted with her is Xavier. Josh and Kala are both awesome artists. I've seen Josh's work up close and personal, some on some of my friends. I'd only met Kala the day that he did my piece. Josh assured me that he was an awesome tattoo artist and that he'd take good care of me. I would have sat down with Josh but he'd been booked up for a while. And seeing that I wasn't going to be in town much longer, he made sure to sit me down with Kala. Backstory: I'd noticed their work on IG a while back and eventually started to put some things together: Oh hey that's a cool design. Oh wait! That looks like my friend's piece. Oh dang! That is. Awesome. Oh that one too. Wow! Having seen his work in person I knew what kinda quality work he did. I contacted my friends who'd had work done by Josh. They quickly gave me his number and from that point on, I was texting to book my appointment. Session with Kala: I showed him what I was thinking of. It was a simple design but one that is meaningful to me. In fact, it ended up being a tad too simple. So, Kala added a lil of this and a pinch of that to my design to spruce it up a bit. Still simple, dainty and feminine, I went with his remixed design. I explained to him that I wasn't really restricted as far as placement was concerned but that of course I just wanted it to flow with wherever we put it. Initially, I thought of the inside of my wrist. Then I thought, what if I put it on my back? After using a stencil to compare and figure out the best placement, we went with the outside of my wrist. From an aerial view, you'd never know my piece is there. Even turning my wrist over, you'd probably not notice it. Awesome. That allowed me to maintain my "professional" appearance without having to worry too much about trying to hide my piece. Kala drew up the piece that he'd mastered for me, printed it out and made up the stencil. We tried it on a few different locations, and in different sizes before we decided the outside of the wrist would be best. Once he actually started to hit me with that ink, I felt like the entire piece only took 30 minutes or so. Awesome. He doesn't have an especially heavy hand. His line work is clean as is his station and supplies. He does beautiful work and I cannot thank him enough for the beautiful piece that he did for me. I'd like to go to him for more in the future. On that same day, Kala also did a piece for my lil one's godmother and my husband. Each piece was beautifully done, in a timely manner and with great skill. The line work on my husband's tribal portion was beautiful. I'd love to see more of Kala's work on my hubby as I know he is interested in completing an idea that he's been thinking about for years. Now that he's had work done by Kala, he seems to feel like he has found THE artist he'd like to do his larger leg piece. We'll see when we can make it back next. The Shop: Aftermath Tattoo Studio is a nice, spacious, clean, very welcoming lil spot. I THINK there are only 2 artists working out of this studio, Josh and Kala. I might be wrong but that is my guess. There is a restroom in their studio. There are a few sinks in their studio as well. They offer you snacks and some monster beverages. I like their waiting area as well as the sitting area that is comprise of sofas and a huge TV. Music is playing throughout the session and the guys are more than happy to chat with you. There are photos of different pieces that Josh has done. I'm not sure if Kala has his book of previous work out there or not. I didn't see it. There are plenty of books for reference as well by the door on top of the bookcase. It never hurts to take a look. You may find something that changes your mind about your tattoo idea. There is parking behind the building, free. A few days after: I have been receiving nothing but compliments on my tattoo. People have asked me if it is healed up already because it looks so good. Some people have asked me for the name of my artist and the shop name. People have asked if they could take a photo of the work. Regret: The ONLY regret is that we were not in town longer to have more work done, by either Kala or Josh. I can only hope that they will stay together and in the same studio for years to come so that I can return a number of times in the future to have more work done. Definitely, I recommend, with the highest praise, Kala and Josh for their beautiful tattoo work. THANKS GUYS!!! I'm so in love with my piece and so is my lil one. read more

Let me tell you about this badass place called AFTERMATH TATTOO STUDIO . I had the honor of experiencing the beautiful artistic magic performed by Josh Chinen. After stalking his IG Page and the studio's page I was assured that he was the perfect artist for my tattoo. It was so easy and conveniently arranged once i consulted with Josh via DM and in person. I told him about myself and my goal to accomplish my Polynesian tribal tattoo. I scheduled my appt and once I arrived he got straight to work by free hand drawing the design directly onto my body. It's was gorgeous Josh was so professional and his work speaks for itself. The studio is very modern in design and extremely sanitary. The atmosphere is classic and the mood is set with just the right music playing in the background to relax you during the adventure. Josh has a smooth light touch and he completed the work of art within the exact time frame that he had promised me. Even the guy that was there performing a tattoo didn't know why she left. Totally unprofessional..we won't be coming back or even recommending this place due to lack of professionalism.
