It has taken time to reveal the extent of the damage to his heart. We put a lot of hope in this being the perfect school for our 4 kids. Great leadership - my favorite celebrity pastor on the Board. The best theology. Challenging academics. Strong community. We could not find a school like this anywhere else. What could go wrong? The kids. The kids here know exactly how to appear as Christians and give right answers and charm adults to win the coveted "Best Christian" awards. But they step on each other to elevate themselves rather than lending a hand to lift each other up. It is a very competitive place in sports and academics and cut-throat socially. It is NOT a wholesome place. These kids are on their phones absorbing and propagating the exact same messages you are hoping to pay for a Christian school to get away from. There are family names at this school and their kids could get away with murder and they know it. If your child is one of their hapless victims, the school would just tell you to pursue Matthew 18 and say reassuringly, "Sin is everywhere." The bullying among the kids is the worst I have ever seen or heard of. It absolutely totally broke our 5th grader and he was only there for a few months. He had been very sheltered his whole life at a small Christian private school, so when he got to this school, the boys in his grade quickly took advantage of that for their own entertainment and mocked, degraded and brutalized him until he believed them - that he was indeed a gay a** pu***. This actually may be the most expensive private school you ever send your kid to, because the messages he absorbed here about himself and the therapy he needs now are exorbitant...there is no end in sight and we are praying for God to do a miracle in his life. But the kids would not be empowered to be the way they are without the adults at this school enabling them. All the adults smile and pretend like everything is fine because they are horrified at the idea of confronting one another or offending any of the "important families." They are all cowardly people-pleasing addicts who care more about maintaining their own spot-in-the-pecking-order than putting that at risk to protect and defend a child who desperately needs a hero. I can't not write a review because I sure wish we'd been warned before entrusting this place with my children.

In March of 2013 CMS announced a $400 million education upgrade and plans to reopen Oakhurst Elementary as a K-8 STEAM partial magnet school in time for the 2015 - 2016 school year. The core focus at the newly branded Oakhurst STEAM Academy will be on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math... aka STEAM. Since its been given the "partial magnet" status, there is a percentage of first priority available seats to children living within the outlined neighborhood boundaries which include Chantilly, Amity Gardens, Commonwealth Morningside, Echo Hills, and Oakhurst. All other children attending Oakhurst Elementary will have to enter via a lottery. The official school mascot is the Oakhurst Rockets and the school colors will be light blue and light orange. Oakhurst STEAM Academy will feature a Science and Robotic Labs, Lego Walls, a even a 3D Printer!!! The re-opening of Oakhurst Elementary is a very welcome change in the neighborhood and will serve as the staging ground for CMS to improve the education of the next generation of Charlotteans :)

The children are surrounded by different cultures, ethnicities, races etc. My children have gone here since 1st grade. My son has moved onto the 6th grade so lil sister is still here. The ladies in the front office are very nice and helpful. Beware. If you shouldn't be there or look outta place... They will be on your head & I love it. PARKING can b a bit tricky at peak times. Overflow DURING school can be done in the bus parking lot. The office is in the entrance. Very clean office. Hallways. Cafeteria. I visit my lil lady often (for lunch or classroom visit..... Unannounced) and always see custodians wiping and sweeping. When school is out, it will Always be a pick up line onto Monroe Rd. a few teachers will be out to assist. When you're Almost there they will ask you the child's name Walkie Talkie to another teacher in which will get your child up and ready for pick up!! An off duty officer will be out to hold traffic for cars comming in & out!! They are/has been CMS School of Excellence!! TTFN

Painted and has inspirational quotes on the walls. They have this one day every year called "Leadership Day" in late March. Totally student- led and shows how great each and every one of their students is. They had first graders singing the National Anthem, Kindergarteners sharing "Leadership Notebooks" where they put academic and personal goals. GREAT SCHOOL!!
