PHENOMENAL. I have one of those Skrillex undercut hairstyles - you know, the shaved side of the head shenanigans. It's also asymmetrical...but everything was self-done by me in the mirror so it was a bit of a mess. For awhile I had been wanting to find someone who could shave a cool design in my head, and a quick Yelp search brought me to Afrocentric, the only place where I actually saw customer photos like what I wanted. I finally decided to take the plunge in early June on my birthday. I called around 4pm, and was told that Chenntel would be able to take me at 4:30. I walked in and got a few quizzical looks as the only white person in the place, but Chenntel recognized me and waived me over to sit at her station. She asked me if I just wanted a design shaved into the side of my head, and I said "well, actually I really don't like how my hair is cut in the back here...I wanted it to look more dramatic but it all got kind of flat and boring. If you could make it more dramatic that would be awesome. But I am growing it out so please don't cut too much." And Chenntel like the mind-reader she is went to work. She spent a loooong time fixing my hair [I pledge never to cut my hair at home again...because every time I do when I eventually go to the salon I get a lecture and someone has to fix all the hacking off that I did] and added tons of layers but left the length that I wanted. She also shaved a cool stripe design into my head as requested! Afterwards she decided to wash my hair to make sure it was cut how she wanted, and she gave me a deep conditioning treatment. Then she said she wanted to put in some volume, so I got the whole rollers & sitting under the heat helmet shebang, and then she curled my hair into this ultra sassy style. Somewhere in the mix I mentioned that I was supposed to drive up to Huntington Beach because some good friends were throwing me a birthday party, and she was so helpful. She gave me the best rockstar treatment possible while being as quick as she could to get me out and on my way to my party! I mentioned everything to her and how appreciative I was and she said that she tries to make everyone who sits in her chair feel special. She definitely succeeds at that and I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants a movie star treatment at normal prices. You know I'm kind of a cheap-ass if I'm cutting my hair at home, but coming to Afrocentric is definitely worth it and will be my new regular spot. ALSO: No personal experience with any other barbers but holy smokes every client I saw walk out of the shop looked SO fresh. Everyone's lines were even, edges were clean, and fades were crispy. ALSO ALSO: Bring cash! read more

Derrick the Barber is wonderful. I was a walk-in on a Monday morning and he cut my hair right. Whenever I'm in town and need a touch up, I will go back to Derrick. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! This place is extremely unprofessional and Lamar is incompetent. The shop is unorganized and dirty. My fiance went for a trimming of his afro and Lamar cut the majority of his hair unevenly and he took all the length off. My fiance had beautiful luscious hair about 5 to six inches in length. By the end of the session he barely had an inch of hair. It was the worst experience of our lives. We should have walked out the moment we walked in. The vibe is extremely negative here. The barbers were not welcoming. They were aloof and Lamar did not take pride in his job at all. He was complaining about the number of clients he had...If he didn't want to work, he should have stayed home. This place is a travesty. read more

The old dude can't cut kids at all wayyyyy too rough and I won't be back there. I was on vacation and wanted to get a San Diego cut from a black barbershop. Cedric the Entertainer looking dude was the only chair open. I should've waited for the first chair barber to finish. No where to park, man I picked a lemon of a shop. Oh boy and the cut was suppose to be a shadow fade and it looks a cancer patient haircut. I'm done. Never again. read more

I'm new to the area and was recommend this shop to carry my 7 year old son for his haircuts. When I arrive there I was greeted by the owner of shop Lamar. I found that the all the barbers are friendly barbers. Normally my son is very nervous around new people. But the one barber I decided to go with Brandon made my son very comfortable. Through the haircut asking him question on how he like school and what do he like to do. My son open up and enjoyed the experience. After it was done my little man look very handsome with his new haircut. I would recommend this place to anyone and I know my son would to. Thank you Brandon.. read more

Will never go there again. Derrick was rude as hell. I walked in at 1:30 asking for a haircut. The place didn't close until 4pm. All he could think of was getting lunch so he rushed through my hair. I didn't like how high my hair was so I asked him to cut lower. He wanted to charge me double for that. I'm a customer, man. Threat me like a customer. read more

I like this place. I usually cut my own hair (that's what guys with short hair do), but every once in a while you wanna go and get it done right. Its funny cuz I would tell my friends I'm looking for a "black barber shop" and they would always ask me "why does it have to be black?" I've just always wanted to check one out. I've been there three time. Prices are reasonable. They've been in business for a long time. I like that the owner is right there cutting hair with the rest of them. Most of the time its empty. They do take appointments and walk-ins. Hip hop music playing with a movie on. I most recently went to get my beard trimmed and shaped, and it looked freakin' good! Barbers are real cool and friendly. I recommend this place. Marwan doesn't lie. read more

Found this place using Yelp when i was in dire need of a hair cut in San Diego. It's pretty hard finding a barber shop that can cater to black hair. Super Cuts is never an option. Walked in and got a great haircut and shave for a good price. read more

Afrocentric Barbers - Barbers Near Me - San Diego, California

We were looking for a new barbershop home for our (11 year old) nephew's afro care and found Derrick to be available. While he was the only stylist on duty, we waited patiently, watching how precise he was with the two customers ahead of us. We knew he would give us the same attention. Some shops drag their feet between clients, but Derrick was just ready to go when it was our turn. "D" showed Derrick the style he wanted from one of the several posters, and together they made a plan. I was asked about the length at one point and suggested he and D decide together. It was clean, precise and perfect on all sides. We expect to make this our regular spot from now on. read more

I will give this place one star. DO NOT GO TO CHENTELL !!!!! I WARN YOU!!! This woman chopped off my beautiful hair that was a lovely afro(Angela Davis style). I am an au naturale woman... As in kinky hair. She gave me an edge up , like a man. I cried out and asked her , "why did she cut my hair like I a was dyke?" My hair was cut uneven ,and when I asked her "what texture of hair does she think I have...?"she, said I had trick or treat hair, because I had so many different textures. " She later persisted to dye my hair, because she wanted to make the "butch" hair cut more feminine. Not only did she dye my hair blonde... when I asked to be a warm chestnut brown hair color, she recolored my hair to correct the mistake. Needless to say I was a leopard at this point. Then, when other barber's sat idly by and watched as she butchered my hair . Another hair beautician inside of the store asked me," if I had read a yelp review about her other atrocious hair catastropes?" When the beautician asked me this question, CHENTELL yelled, "I F*CKING do this for a living." I looked at her crying and said, "why are you so mad and yelling...I am the one that looks like a butch leopard?" Not to mention, I had an interview in 4 days. She ended dying my hair for a 3rd time. Back to the closest color to black... I still had spots of orange patches in my hair, where she neglected to color my hair. She had the nerve to say she wouldn't charge me for the haircut, but she CHARGED me for the dye job. I ended up calling the owner of the barbershop the next day threatening to sue. I also texted Chentell and said I would take legal action...HERE'S THE KiCKER though ... the Chentell that butchered my hair was not even the woman i was supposed to visit. The correct Chantelle that should have done my hair had relocated to a different shop. So I was texting her and threatening to sue if my hair was not corrected. ..and the ORIGINAL Chantalle that should have serviced me, offered me a free color and service to possibly conjure up a decent hairstyle. Oh, and the owner was there the whole time!!! I thought he was a regular barber until I had to go back to his shop to get my hair cut even. He cried and asked me not to sue him. He gave me a full refund from my last visit. THIS SHOP SHOULD GO DOWN IN THE DUMPS. If you go to any barber in the shop , go to SLIM!! When I say barber mastery!!! He is great...and educated in his craft. read more

I never go to barber shops for the reason of barbers not feeling welcoming. I came in and got exactly that . I walked around for a good minute and never got greeted nor acknowledged. I had my hair cut and it was not a fade I would expect from barbers . At check out she tells me to go to the liquor store to take out cash instead of my debit card . I am charged to withdraw money there, it was just not a good experience read more

Last year I moved from San Diego and one thing that is always hard to find is a good barber in a new city. Of course when I flew to San Diego yesterday to visit, the next day I was there. Derek (we have the same name) is my barber of choice and he always does a great job that I NEVER look in the mirror when he finishes. It's kind of a compliment to the barber letting him or her know your trust their art. I would definitely suggest him or any of the barbers in the shop. Great atmosphere, great location, and good people. read more

Brandon has been cutting my hair just about every week for about 10 years and he's never disappointed. He's been cutting my son's hair for about 7 years. After we leave the shop, people swear the barber used a stencil on my son's hair line. The owner, Lamar, runs a very professional shop with a great atmosphere, hip hop in the background and sports on the numerous TVs. Cost: $20 for adults, $15 for kids, bring cash. I recommend making an appointment, but walk ins are accepted. Always tip your barber. Good lookin out B! read more

Afrocentric Barbers - Lined up by Brandon - Barbers Near Me - San Diego, California

I was trying to find this place the other day and came to find out the address listed wasn't correct. They're actually located down a couple blocks. When I walked in, someone was passed out asleep on one of the barber chairs and there was an old man that was just starting at me, but didn't say anything. Puzzled if he was just somebody's lost grandpa, I asked about getting a haircut and I ended up getting one from him. He messed my line up and I ended up getting razor bumps on the back of my neck. In all the years I've been going to barbershops, I have never gotten razor bumps till now! read more

I give this place 5 stars. It's been years upon years since I've went to an actual barber and I came into this shop with a ragged mop and left with the perfect cut. Lamar is good with the clippers. I'll be coming back for all my cuts while I live in Diego. read more

I've been going to this shop since it was down on Broadway WAY back in the day. Every barber in there is great, but my man is Mr.Lamar, the owner. Comfortable, friendly environment. They give you exactly the look you want and do a great job of it, at very fair prices. Street parking can be a little challenging at times, but it's worth it. read more

I go here to get my hair cut to a 1, a lineup and my facial hair cleaned up, and the most I've ever paid was $20...that is considered a STEAL. I usually get it cut by the same guy (I'm not sure of his name, but he's younger, from the south and funny as hell) and he's probably given me the best consistent cuts In San Diego. If you go during the weekday in the morning, there's usually never a wait. read more

I just got a haircut today by the gentleman who was closest to their lounge area. I didn't catch his name but was pretty tall and skinny. He was very cool, made interesting conversation and the haircut I would rate at a 7/10. Very disappointed by the price though. I know it's not his fault but I bet that the location has to do a lot for the price being that much. By far the most expensive cut I have ever paid for. But of course I gave him a tip for the job he did. I probably won't be coming back and it is a shame because of so close to where I reside. Besides that, the cut was decent and will recommend as a last minute location. read more

A community barbershop just can't help but find a home when the right neighborhood is discovered. Originally downtown for 13 years, Afrocentric Barber made a move to North Park, where it knew many of it's clients already hailed from. Now customers can get the quality cut they have come to expect without the hassle of traveling down town. And what a move it must have been. Not only are the people happy, but the barbershop is now incredibly spacious, even with the various t.v.s and couches spread out across the room. You definitely won't have to worry about not being comfortable at Afrocentric Barbers. And comfort, the ability to welcome people in, is something that owner William Lemar knows a lot about. Years back he served his four years in the Navy, working on the U.S.S. Ranger; what he says amounted to a floating city. And during those days he was responsible for whatever hair came in; he couldn't refuse service or say he didn't know how to cut the hair in-front of him. Nowadays that Navy training has translated into anyone being able to sit in his chair and request their cut. Recently, not wanting to confine his customer's options solely to the barber's chair, he let a salon move into the rear of the shop, complete with aestheticians' stations and personalized space. So now nobody has to go without a personal look to suit their needs. read more

Worst haircut ever. Okay, so I just moved down the street from this place. Needed a haircut, the closest place that specializes in clipper cuts should do right (have short hair)? Uh... wrong. I stroll in and am greeted by this older gentleman with fairly thick glassess. I think: okay, at least he's got experience. I ask for the usual high fade, not complicated at all...this dude butchers my hair. To the point where I just ask him to make it one length all around so I can get the hell out of dodge. Then, I go to pay with my debit card but they tell me that they only have one barber on staff thats authorized to run debit purchases and she's not even there. Awesome. I have to go to 7/11 to get some cash out. This was by far the worst cut I've ever received. And that includes when I used to have my friends cut my hair back in college. Maybe the other barbers have some skills, but beware of any barber shop that keeps a dude like this on staff!!! Be careful. read more

I have never walked out of a barbershop feeling dissed before. And the funny thing is he did a decent job on my haircut. But when I asked him if he could give me a razor shave he just looked at me like i was crazy. I didnt see what the big deal was because he is a a barber and any halfway decent barber knows how to do a straight razor hot towel shave. He told me i dont have enough facial hair worth shaving. So let me get this right; im asking you to perform a service which will only increase your profit, and you dont want to do it? He did sort of half-ass shave me with the edger but it did not come close to what I asked for. Then while i was sitting in his chair a young lady walked in and asked if she could bring her son in for a cut around 3pm. Again he gives her the "b--ch are you crazy face" and was all cross with her. The lady stopped herself from telling him off because she realized dude was just a crabby old man. When he finished my haircut all he did was brush off the hair and take off the apron and stare at me. I paid the man $17 dollars for a basic cut and poor custumer service. I was dissappointed with the customer service, the price, and the quality of service. But maybe my expectations are too high as i used to be a barber. read more

This place is horrible. If your a dude, DO NOT LET Chenntel CUT YOUR HAIR. She will mess it up real bad, and try to trim your beard and do a bunch of other things you didn't ask for and charge you at the end. My hair looks like shit and I need to find another place tomorrow. read more

I had never been to this place and had a great first experience!! I have super curly but thin hair that gets really dry and dead looking fast (I am mixed black/white), so I needed a trim bad. Chenntel not only got rid of my split ends, but she also moisturized and washed my hair and taught me a new moisturizing regimen that has my hair looking healthy and shiny. I felt like she was really familiar with my hair type which was awesome (and hard to come by). My boo also got his hair cut by a different barber there, and he's looking good! Also, we had to take our daughter with us (she's almost 2 and obnoxious), and I was worried that they'd be annoyed that we brought her there, but they weren't at all. So overall, it was a very comfortable experience, our hair looks great, and I'll definitely be back! :) read more

My wife and I recently moved to San Diego from DC and were just driving around checking out different neighborhoods when we spotted Afrocentric. Since I hadn't had my haircut since we moved, we decided to give it a try. It was great that they were open on Mondays, since many shops are not. We were greeted by Derrick as we walked in and he took me right away with no wait. The haircut he gave is excellent and the price was right. The shop is big and clean, with many tv's--though I found talking to Derrick to be engaging and entertaining on its own. I'll definitely be going back to have Derrick hook me up again. read more
