Ah, Affleck's Palace. How can I hymn thee? Let me count the ways...
I first went there when I was about fourteen, and just realising, possibly somewhat belatedly, that it was suddenly 'cool' to be 'uncool' and 'alternative'. It was a whole new world to me - people with piercings and tattoos wandered freely, just like normal people, and I distinctly remember walking around with my mouth open, staring at all the goodness surrounding me. Then I got lost, as I believe even long-standing devotees are wont to do, and emerged four hours later, arms laden with those rubber bracelets that seemed really important at the time and a large cushion in the shape of Miffy's head.
I have been hopelessly in love ever since.
It's a labyrinth, dedicated to all things esoteric and unusual. If you want a piece of jewellery not available on the high street, or a really beautiful henna tattoo (yes, that is the voice of experience speaking there), or a funky tobacco tin for your funky tobacco, or some amazing vintage clothing, then Affleck's is the place for you. Should you find that you're exhausted after being lost in there for approximately five days, there is a cafe... somewhere. I believe it's on the top floor - but then again, I also believe that Affleck's warps time and space as soon as you walk through the door, so it may actually be underground somewhere in Chile. It's hard to tell.
The shops themselves are run by uniformly nice people (unfortunately, many of them aren't prepared to haggle, which is a shame), who, if you speak to them nicely, of course, are hugely informative and helpful. They do have names, the shops, but there are so many little places selling stuff you'd never thought you wanted until you saw it that it's impossible to know them all. One of the more famous is Thunder Egg (whence came the Miffy head cushion), and there's also a Grin (or Grind; I've been reliably informed that it is either of these) for all of your emo attire needs (they also sell those really cool umbrellas with the pop-up eyes that small children have; I also now have one). There is also a bewildering and enthralling number of sex shops purveying the most startling array of - ah - toys.. that I have ever seen, as well as the more common hen party sort of thing. Of course, you're also covered for typical posters, CDs, and jewellery (including, I think, a wonderful bead shop).
It's also easy to get to from Market Street tram station or Piccadilly Gardens (or even Piccadilly Station). This being the case, I'd recommend everyone to come and check it out. You'll not be disappointed by Affleck's! read more
