Even though they now focus a bit more on multi-day tours, Jeff sent an insanely nice and informative response about the options in the area. This was super valuable because it was really difficult to find information on my own on the internet. To top it off, Jeff also recommended some alternative activities that might be fun. Communicating with Jeff was prompt, professional, and informative.

After choosing the location and date/time for Paddle Board the company got in contact with me in a short amount of time via email with all the information I needed. Chris responded to all of my questions very fast as well. What to say about Chris? She is fantastic! Very patient, calm, in touch with nature and knows what she is doing. She is the perfect instructor and I felt safe, comfortable and never in a rush! While paddling her husband joined us and both of them were friendly and provided lots of information on the area. When the lesson was over they gave me tips of where to go and I ended up at Sand Harbor (State Park) where i played volleyball on the beach and got a nice tan by a wonderful and breathtaking beach! Thank you Le Grand Adventure for the unforgettable experience! Wish you much success! Valeria

When I think of a Geology tour, that brings me back to when i took Geology 100 when we had a field…read moretrip to look at the fault line on Somerset (and I wasn't really sure what I should be looking for). Geology Tours Tahoe, feels like you're in a Jumani type of adventure with fun hands-on science learning and experience. Signing up for this I didn't know what to expect, as this is beyond my comfort zone, dealing with high terrain, and digging for crystals. But Dr. Montana Hodges made the event so fun in a way that even a non-science person like myself was really engaged. We traveled 45 minutes up a bumpy road with plenty of beverages and snacks that would have lasted a few days! Then we made it to our destination where we learned of the history of Crystal Peak, and how the Truckee river came to be and the various Prehistoric eras. There were plenty of tools to pick and choose from in a group of 7 of us. This definitely was a Sunday adventure to never forget. I was able to luckily find a crystal, so I felt accomplished. There are several tours that Montana provides that I would love to attend! She is very engaging and personable that I felt a connection to Science that I may not have had when I was taking Geology in College. It was neat to learn about Jurassic park, and how the dinosaurs were technically from a different prehistoric era than depicted. Also given the fact that Montana dedicated half of her day to take us on our high terrain excursion, and then had a long hours drive ahead of her the same day was beyond impressive! I'll definitely be looking to plan another Tour adventure and see what other learnings are in store!

I dunno--what were you looking for out of a drive up a mountain in winter to learn about people getting stranded for making bad choices about winter in the mountains? It seems like a pretty good metaphor for something. They (the signs and the local authorities enforcing them) threaten that tire chains are necessary during winter weather events (which was most certainly a thing that was happening during our trip), but they seem to give you a pass for AWD and snow tires. Bring chains if that's not what you're driving.

Chollar Mine Tour - A Glimpse into the Golden Age of Virginia City…read more Recommended by locals, I made my way to the Chollar Mine, once the 5th largest mine during the 19th-century Gold Rush era. In its prime, it yielded an overwhelming amount of gold--worth millions of dollars then and easily billions in today's value. Scattered across the grounds are authentic mining tools, giving visitors a sense of the equipment used back in the day. One highlight was the rock smasher, which the staff explained in detail. From the start, John and Gary gave me a warm welcome and patiently answered all my questions. Before we entered the mine, Gary provided a fascinating introduction to its history and operations--explaining how miners worked in 8-hour shifts, the intense conditions they faced underground, and how they coped with the heat from the geothermal groundwater. Equipped with a helmet, I followed the narrow tunnels where the ceiling is low enough to give you a bump if you're not careful. Along the old rail tracks used for transporting minerals, Gary demonstrated the rope-and-pulley system, drilling tools, and even how miners once relied on rats and candles to test air quality inside the mine. He also pointed out the split line in the rock that marked different mining outputs, giving a vivid sense of how geologists identified the veins. To make the experience more tactile, he even handed me some clay samples from the mine, so I could literally feel the earth that once hid so much gold. Unfortunately, visitors cannot go as deep into the mine as I had hoped--I wanted to experience the underground heat myself--but for safety reasons, the tour is limited. The cave can be slippery, and you'll often need to bend down to avoid injury. After the tour, Gary enthusiastically offered to take photos for guests, adding a personal touch to the visit. Beyond the tour itself, I learned that John now owns the mine, while Gary has written a novel that brings Virginia City's Golden Age to life. --- Final Thoughts The Chollar Mine Tour is more than just a history lesson--it's an immersive journey into the life of 19th-century miners. Thanks to the passion and effort of John and Gary, visitors can better appreciate the challenges, ingenuity, and culture of Virginia City's mining heritage. ---
