I found out about Black Bob Bay from my 1st grader who went here while on a field trip at Ernie…read moreMiller summer camp. She came home gushing about this very cool pool that had a lazy river - she had me at lazy river. Black Bob Bay is located within an Olathe City park and it's honestly one of the cooler pools that is owned by a municipality that i've been to in the KC area. There is an expansive pool for grown ups and kids, along with a baby pool, a kid friendly pool with a water slide and tons of water features, and a lazy river. 4/5 and not 5/5 for three main reasons: 1. there isn't a great system in place to make sure folks don't hog the tubes for the lazy river. It's sort of a free for all and on a busy day it's akin to the hunger games to snag one. When I got to the area where they kept them and a dad was trying to hoard the final three, I gave him a look and he did give me very sad looking one so I could go with my daughter. I really wish they'd manage this better by maybe giving time limits or not letting single adults take the double tubes when they are going solo. I saw so much of this and it was such a waste of resources on a busy day. 2. they need to find a better way to keep the ground cooler - if it's putting more misters around or something else, I'm not sure, but I am sure my feet nearly burnt off trying to get from the pool to the lazy river. 3. The adult swim/ random pool closures was a lot. We were there for maybe an hour and a half and I think we had to get out at least two times for more than 15 minutes each, which seemed a bit extreme. Overall this is a fun pool. It could be better, but it's a good value and we would return.

The whistle blowing is downright obnoxious. It seems like they're just looking for a reason to reprimand someone. For example, "no floaties in this part of the pool but totally fine right next to it." Mind you, my toddler had been swimming with floaties in that section for 30 uninterrupted minutes. This place looks like a blast but we won't be back.

Two kinds of slides, interactive fountains and fenced in. -Lap Swim area - even during peak hours, they maintained a few lanes for lap swimmers. -Normal "pool" areas varying from 3ft to 6ft. -A "lillypad" challenge. Put your ego aside because the kids will kick your butt, but it's super fun. -Diving boards (low and higher - I think apx 3 m) -Aqua wall (like a rock wall) -two slides Note: What I love about the slides, they have double tubes so you can take your little one with you. This policy/allowance SAVED THE DAY -Lazy river So why is that important? Because you can keep rotating through the various activities and really enjoy a good, long time there. I'm a long time Johnson County resident and live not far from this pool. I used to bring my…read moregrandkids for years and had a membership. This is the first time I've been back in probably four years. We tried out there twilight hours for the pool, which are from 6 PM to 8 PM. It seems to be the least busiest and also it's not blazing sun, and there's more chairs to choose from with umbrellas at that time. I brought my 12 year-old granddaughter, my eight-year-old granddaughter and my six-year-old granddaughter. They had a great time in the pool, but there were several things they were disappointed by. They wanted to go down the lazy river in one of the Floaties and even though there weren't that many people they did not have very many Floaties to use. Also, they had the slide closed down that you go down with on the Floaties. They did have a good amount of lifeguards who are paying attention. I think the one negative it seemed like there were no adults on the premises, it was all teenagers. Now I will say that the teens were doing their job and we're not messing around and very attentive. But I do believe they need an adult to handle unruly people or people trying to sneak in to the pool without paying. There was a line to get in at the 6 PM twilight hours. And everyone was waiting patiently, but there was only one teenage boy at the checkout. There were three adult women in their 20s, who clearly went around the line and snuck in the side door and were bold about it. I do believe that the young man saw them and just didn't want to deal with them. When I got up to the cash register to pay, he was friendly and he asked if I was a resident of Shawnee and I said yes, and he asked to see my drivers license which I have no problem with. I think that's a good thing but it's still irritating that he knew they had snuck in and did nothing about it. I paid by Apple Pay and then I got one lifejacket for the smaller granddaughter and the other granddaughter who is a brought her own. I found a seat easily and watched the kids enjoy the water. The pool seemed clean and fresh. The bathrooms were another matter, the women's bathroom was a mess, and I tried to put my purse in a variety of lockers on the outside that did not work. I finally found one that worked with my lock that I brought so that I could swim. I enjoyed the pool as well and most people behaved themselves. There will always be some kids that they need to blow the whistle on about rules that need to be obeyed for the safety of others. And the last comment I have was, I was sitting in a chair by the lazy river, watching the grandkids go by and there were what appeared to be older teens. There were two girls and one boy. The girl punched the boy and proceeded to call him racial slurs in a negative connotation, (she was the same race). She kept hitting him and he did not hit her back and he just tried to hold her wrist to prevent it. The lifeguard clearly saw what was going on and did not blow the whistle or say "Hey, stop that or you're going to have to leave. " He clearly just turned his back on it and did not want to deal with it. The other girl was embarrassed and saw everyone looking, and she de-escalate the situation. So that was concerning to me because what if it was a larger crowd that got into an altercation around all of the children that were there. I absolutely know that the lifeguards could not handle the situation and they would have to leave their posts which then leaves the swimmers at risk. They need to definitely have an adult or several on the premises, particularly a security guard to make people think twice about their actions.

This review specifically speaks to their Kiddie Pool Play Time, because that's what I use. The…read morefacility has a competition pool with lap lanes, a separate leisure pool with water features geared more toward smaller children, and a separate, cordoned off spray park. On one hand, I do appreciate, as a person with two small children, that they have time that the kid side pool with a zero depth entry is exclusively reserved for babies and toddlers a couple of mornings a week...but, it is a narrow window of time (9:30 - 11:30, and then you have to leave, so they can open the full pool at noon). The biggest problem I have is that the lap pool is fairly frequently used for hosting swim meets, and when that happens, the entire facility is closed to the public (which usually happen to be on a day we were planning on going). I wish there were somewhere else to host swim meets...it seems unfortunate for the neighborhood on hot summer days when the neighborhood pool is not accessible. The spray park is okay, but it is part of admission, whereas other parts of the metro have larger spray parks in public parks like the one that surrounds this pool, and are free of charge. It's a bummer, because this is in my immediate neighborhood. But I'm usually better off going further to a public spray park that is available to my little kids more than just Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday for a couple of hours.

The kiddie area included two small pools, one of them had more of a zero-depth area with fountains. They only had one lifeguard watching both pools, but no children were allowed without parents and the maximum age was six and no more than three kids per adult so the kids were being monitored pretty closely. At least I know mine was. For only $2 it's a great way for kids to beat the heat. If only other pools would follow their lead!

There is green space and walking trails, tennis courts and a playground, shelters and areas to explore. But there are also consistent reminders of the thoughts and legacy left to us all by the late Dr. King. The playground is a recently renovated space done in partnership with the '15 & the Mahomies' Foundation, the community-focused group backed by the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes. Safe, new equipment with a soft surface makes for all kinds of playtime fun for the littles. Getting outside, with cooperative weather, has always been a wonderful way to spend family time and this playground offers exactly the kind of fun atmosphere in which to enjoy that time. The area is lined to the south with paved walking paths and sidewalks, plenty of space and very accessible. You are just a mile or so from the Plaza, the UMKC campus, and more. This is a green space tucked in a beautiful area with lots of historical and cultural significance. We should all be so fortunate to not only use the space but remember of the legacy of the man who inspired its name.
