Our daughter has done this as a week-long day camp (at Bement Summer Camp) twice now. Each year was…read moresimilar but the daily activities changed. Regardless, she LOVES this program! Plenty to challenge older / more experienced kids, but also moving at a pace the younger crowd can keep up with. Last year, her favorites were kayaking and caving. This year, raft-building and caving. She starts each day excited for a new adventure, and comes home worn out and so full of stories. The guides have all been fantastic - knowledgeable about the trails, history, and environmental topics; good at setting expectations about the day's activities and rules; and great with kids of varying abilities. Caving may be the best thing about this program. Our family hikes & paddles regularly, but caving is best done with a guide who's done the cave before and can set expectations realistically. When our daughter comes back from the caving days, her clothes are wet and filthy, she tells stories about impossibly narrow and tight passages, and she grins the whole time. It's such a great experience and has really expanded her enjoyment of our outdoor adventures. My only request is that the guides would give parents a list of where they went, complete with recommended parking and recommended routes - so we can try these things too! Well, except the caving. I'd want a guide for that!

We brought my son's 6th Grade class here for an adventure and no one left disappointed. You could…read moresee quite a few of the class were tentative as they entered the cave but once they got inside all of there faces lit up as they began to explore. Our guides were Anna and Benjamin and both were great with the kids. They told us stories and taught us all some facts about how the caves were formed, what was down there, and how they would look in the future. We explored some of the larger areas of the cave and also some of the tighter passages. It was peaceful, challenging, meditative, and fun. It's also worth noting the care Anna and Benjamin took to make sure that everyone had a pleasurable and safe experience. They were supportive to push us to get a little outside of our comfort zones but were equally supportive and attentive if someone felt they had reached their limit. It's been two days and the class is still talking about the trip. I plan to get as many of the kids and parents together to do this again some time in the near future. I do not have enough words to express the gratitude I feel for this experience.

Easily more than five stars. Ten stars. A billion stars. A galaxy of stars and supernovas and quasars rotating in a vast and endless universe. You get the idea. This company is awesome. Jennifer the owner has staffed her company with the most incredibly friendly, down-to-earth people you'll ever meet. Our guide, Charlotte, was fantastic. Wise beyond her years, professional, knowledgeable, easy to talk to on the stretches of lazy river in between rapids, and an inspiring, true leader. We did the Deerfield River Fife Brook section in Massachusetts, which was about ten miles (normally 7) and two hours. The minimum age is 8 with most rapids being class 2 and one class 3, so it's good for beginners and/or kids. All of the staff are great with kids. My son is 9 and had a great time. They also offer the Monroe Bridge section with mostly class 3 and 4's which has a minimum age 15. The cost also includes a meal afterwards, and I had the salmon with salad, noodles and cornbread. Delicious and the perfect way to end the day. Can't recommend this place enough, and hope to see their other locations someday as well.

We took a beautiful afternoon tour along the Housatonic River our first day at the Berkshires for the week and what a great start it was. We got to learn and see how the beavers create their dams and mud piles, as well as see turtles that were hanging out on the tree limbs along our way. Hillary was also gracious enough to provide cold bottled waters and while apples to snack on, which was a nice pick me up! Though the tour was only supposed to be 2hrs it went a little over about 45min and we didn't feel rushed at all as the current was sort of strong and since my husband and I had shared a canoe, we had to coordinate quite a bit - especially going back to shore. Overall I would recommend this tour to my family and friends and really appreciate the kindness and bubbly attitude these two ladies had I share. Thank you!

Gave us waterproof packs for our phones and valuables, cold water bottles, and apples (which are great snack on the river). You can tailor the tour for the length you prefer, and Hilary gives you basics and tips for rowing. This is a long historic slow flowing river and perfect for our first kyack tour. Lots of interesting habitats, flowering plant life, and animals (fish, painted turtles basking, beavers on shore). Went in July and no mosquitos or blackflies. I would like to go back for the evening tour to observe the beaver families in action.

Zoar Outdoor…read moreis located on route 2 in Western MA directly across the street from the Deerfield River. Very beautiful area. After a brief safety video and briefing, we were given our rafting kit, loaded on buses, and brought up river to the raft slip, this was about a 30 minute trip north west. The raft trip ended across the street from where we started. An easy exit, we got out of the boat, returned our kit, and walked across the road to watch the video, and purchase souvenir photographs. We had an excellent day on the river during our 10 mile trip. My 14 year old son and I did the Zoar Gap trip which took most of the day with an hour break for lunch at a nice riverside picnic ground in the mountains. You can bring your own food( appropriately packaged) if you would like. They store it in a water proof bag and stow it on the raft. If there is even a hint of rain or you just don't want to get completely soaked, bring a three season jacket or rain coat. Also, you will be out on a river dress accordingly. NO open toed shoes! This includes flip- flops. You can rent shoes and wetsuits. If you have any medical issues like allergic reactions etc. I would either bring your own Epi Pen kit and medications with you, and stow it in the water proof bag, or possibly think about finding a less isolated outdoor experience. Be warned, white water rafting can be physically strenuous. The only issue I had was the lunch that was provided. Not that it was bad, it was well packaged and pre-made( not to order). If you have food allergies or don't like mayonnaise bring your own food. Zoar Outdoor is not really able to accommodate food allergies or pickey eaters. Mayonnaise was on every sandwich. I don't know why. They could just have provided packets on the side but they there were none available. My son hates mayonnaise so he only ate the chips, pickle, and cookies provided which got him through the remainder of the trip but not exactly a great lunch. One man we were with had a dairy allergy. I'm pretty sure he was not able to eat any of the food. I'm not sure why he didn't make sure a head of time if he could eat the food.I wish I had known the sandwiches had mayonnaise on them a head of time. Not a huge deal, we got over it. The trip was super fun! I would love to go again and will definitely choose Zoar Outdoor again.
