We wasted a lot of time sticking to their "process" and they refuse to implement any changes we would suggest. Personally i like them team, but they are pig headed and stubborn about a process which is not effective.

Neither of us had any experience of adoption beforehand, so we really had to be walked through everything. The staff of Adopt, and Lisa especially who was our adoption councillor couldn't have been more helpful and supportive. At every turn they were there to answer questions, boost our confidence when the process seemed to be taking a long time (just the nature of adoption, sadly), but when they really came into their own was when it came to the adoption itself. Being at a hospital waiting for a baby is a situation that nothing can prepare you for, but the staff of Adopt were always there. We could have called anytime and they would have been ready to advise; we really couldn't have asked for me. What's really great though is that even after our adoption has finalized, and we have the most wonderful son, they continue to be available, supporting our birth mother, and giving us further advice about how to make open adoption work in practice. I really can't recommend them highly enough.

From matching and finalization to attaching with our kiddos and becoming a family of five, Devon continually blew me away. Thoughtful about the source of behavior, equipping us with the "right" language to use and tremendously targeted actions to develop our family dynamic, she shepherded us through our first year with grace, wisdom, positivity and professionalism. With her years of experience, she considers - and seems to intuitively understand - each family member and how to bring us together. Devon's warm and professional nature left us always feeling able to be wholly transparent in feelings and challenges. After every interaction, we would leave with greater understanding on the why, thoughtful next steps including the language to use and confidence that our family would continue moving forward. We are not the first, nor the last, and this perspective makes everything easier. I can't recommend Devon highly enough - we were honored to have her as our FFA social worker in the process and thrilled to be able to hire her independently after finalization to continue to help us, as needed, in the years to come!

Issues like attachment, PTSD, and delayed emotional development are challenges for every adopted child, but few knowledgeable guides for adoptive parents are available. And raising an adopted child is in many ways counter-intuitive. Example: raising a bio kid who has experienced consistent attachment is about nurturing independence; raising an adopted child is about fostering dependence. Kids with attachment disorders often make no sense at first glance. Their behavior can be completely mystifying and our natural impulses exacerbate the problem rather than healing it. This is where someone like Devon comes in. She has helped us understand child development, and the variations on it that occur in a traumatized or adopted child. She has been our steady guide in healing and raising our beautiful son, enlightening us in areas we didn't even know existed. Without her, to put it bluntly, we would have botched the job. We learned about Devon from our social worker, who had been her colleague for many years and considered her an expert in attachment. We attended a free class taught by Devon, for adoptive parents, and our eyes opened to the patterns we were seeing that differed so much from what we understood and expected. Since then we have worked with her at various stages of our son's development, and have been grateful every step of the way for her deep knowledge and support. Besides her expertise, we love her practical and non-judgmental support. She works with real people, real kids, real families, and encourages us to feel good about ourselves, rather than to strive for some perfect model that no one can achieve. She considers the whole family dynamic, every person of which is impacted by these issues, and she has reminded us to take care of ourselves and each other on this journey, as well as our little guys. She's also fun and grounding -- let's solve this one bite at a time and enjoy it too. We are profoundly grateful for having Devon in our lives.

We now have been finalized with our daughter for 3 years and are ready to expand our family again through fost /adopt, but we decided that we wanted more input than we were allowed to have with the county. My daughters sister (who was also in foster care) ended up in a great home and that all came about through A Better Way, so we decided to look into their program and have begun our pride training classes. Since this is my 2nd time going through pride training (my last training was more than 5 years ago) initially I was not at all excited, but I have to say that I am really enjoying the classes. Being that I have been a foster parent, a concurrent planning placement parent and now an adoptive parent I am quite familiar with how things work, what the kids go through etc... and A Better Way does a really good job of balancing giving out that information (and not scaring people) along with presenting the lighter side of fost/adopt. I am very eager to finish the training and get to the next and so far so good. I would recommend a better way to anyone considering fost/adoption.

What's with the negative Yelp reviews?!…read more Jewish Family & Children's Services (JFCS) is an absolutely amazing organization. They offer services to a wide range of individuals in need regardless of their religion, ethnicity, race, age, disability etc. If you are in financial trouble, need a temporary place to stay, or a warm meal they are willing to work with you. They are a truly special non-profit that takes pride in serving the community. I volunteered with JFCS a few months ago after I learned about their Canine Corps program. This is a special program where you train your pooch to pass a test in order to become a canine companion. Once they are trained, the pups visit seniors and other community members. Because let's face it, who doesn't love the company of a pooch?! I worked with my pup Rosie and attended training classes, but unfortunately she did not pass the test :( Rosie is quite the class clown and is easily distracted by the other doggies. I would love to keep working with Rosie so that she can eventually pass the test. Masha and the crew at JFCS are amazing and I would love to work on another project with them. They offer additional volunteer opportunities with holocaust survivors, seniors, adults with illnesses or disabilities, children, and emigres. You can also volunteer to work shabbat dinners, shop for the food pantry, tutor, deliver meals, and the list continues! If you're interested in volunteering there are a wide range of opportunities available to you. I love this organization and I really wish that more people were aware of all that they do. I highly recommend attending one of their events and volunteering with them. Although my pup is not yet a canine companion, we had a great experience attending the training sessions and learning about all of the services that they offer. If you know someone in need or want to lend a hand, do yourself a favor and contact them. You will not regret it!

This isn't the case. JFCS offers services to anyone in need, from therapy/counseling, to support groups, adoption services, all kinds of help for seniors, services for emigres, and much, much more! They are VERY LGBT-friendly, offer excellent training to their volunteers, and the staff is appropriately discreet. So what is my experience with JFCS that leads me to be such a huge fan? I saw a therapist through JFCS for a while, attended a Bereavement Support Group after my beloved grandfather passed away (this particular type of support group is offered as a FREE service!!), and now offer my time as a volunteer through the Seniors at Home program. So, I've been both on the giving and receiving end of JFCS and have only good things to say about this particular organization, which gives so much to so many people and done their part to save so many lives! I heartily recommend their services to anyone, and especially encourage people looking for a meaningful volunteer experience to consider becoming a companion to a senior citizen through the Seniors at Home volunteer program! It was bittersweet, but they were all packed away in a storage container in my closet, taking up space. Yet, childishly I was very heartbroken with the thought of throwing them away. I did a myriad of internet searches and was surprised that neither Goodwill nor the Salvation Army would accept gently used stuffed animals. It was then that I found Kendra and Project Night Night SF. What a wonderful idea! It was an easy process involving cleaning (washing) the items, packaging them and dropping them off. I was pleased that they were accepted and that they fit the criteria size-wize and condition wise. Plus, they would be used for gift baskets to comfort children who really need extra TLC. Sadly, I don't think that they accept used items any longer, but I'm not 100% certain. Plus, they provide you with a tax receipt if you would like to list as a deduction.

Anyone who has a child, or remembers their childhood knows how important having a special lovey is! We all had them, a blanket and stuffed animal, something that we just couldn't bear to part with, and still lives in that box on the closet shelf. Well, Project Night Night reaches out to those who need the comfort of their lovey the most. PNN is dedicated to promote the well being of children (and parents for that matter) who are in a transitional phase and experiencing something that the majority of us would never have to- life in a shelter. Through the distribution of "Night Night Packages" which include a blanket, a stuffie, and a book the organization is able to promote warm and fuzzy feelings in a not so ideal situation. Kendra, the executive director, is INCREDIBLE. Through a little thought and a lot of help she turned something that is an assumed given for children and created an organization that reaches out across the country bettering thousands of children's lives. Project Night Night collects donations of books, blankies, and stuffies throughout various locations in the city, so it's super easy to help out! Check out ProjectNightNight.org for more information, to get involved and to hear from those who have been touched by Project Night Night. :)
