Whenever I've been to a recruitment agency, the people inside are generally pretty helpful. After…read moreall, they make money from finding you a job. I recently popped into Acorn because I was on my way back from a job interview in a place I didn't really want to work (I hate call centres) and figured as I was already suited, booted and looking generally employable, I would have a go. I was told there was nothing I could do in the branch and I have to search for vacancis myself online. That's not a problem obviously but in my previous dealings with agencies, the point of it was always that they did the searching for me, and then they pocketed an hourly rate from my employment. So went to a different agency where they actually did earn their money and do the searching on my behalf.

This employment agency is part of a big national chain. They have a good reputation in Cardiff and…read morehave secured several major temporary staff supply contracts. For example, the Welsh Assembly Government has an exclusive contract with Acorn and uses them for any temporary staff they need. In addition many of the local councils in South Wales use this branch of Acorn because they know that vetting procedures are strictly adhered to. The big attraction to a job seeker of registering with this agency is that it can provides access to some of the best employers in the area. Many workers, after working as a temp., find that they are considered favourably when a permanent vacancy with their host organisation occurs.

I've had some laughs here I must admit. One great instance was when a jobworth said he could not speak to the woman on the phone who requested his assistance as health and safety would not allow him to do so. And yes I did spend the next 10 minutes taking the mickey out of him. Seriously though, nothing is connected here and for the 2-3 months I was there I only signed on properly once, that was how many problems I had. Another time saw a woman who was offering me jobs in the North of Wales, wondering why I was saying no to them and then had the cheek to say she was having a bad day in her job. Her job that she was lucky enough to have after a recession and all. I was utterly sickened by this. She also gave me wrong advice on getting a driving license that I was only told upon leaving I was entitled too. However the woman I did get in the end was incredibly helpful and really did seem to care. She did everything she could for me before I left and really appreciated that there was at least one person that understood what it was like to sit on the other side of that table.
