For $25 USD each (between the 4 of us), we got a 4 bedroom private room. Though the place gave off a grungy, hippy vibe, the place all around was very clean. Service was awesome and very accommodating. There were a ton of other travelers staying here at the time we checked in, which was a little overwhelming at first, but definitely got use to a bunch of new faces always around. The part we loved most about staying at Hostel Elf was how open and chill everyone was who stayed here. The first night, we met a ton of people by just keeping our door open. There was a bachelor party in the room next to us from Hamburg, Germany, so with our door open, they came over to say hi, bringing their liquor over to share. They have hostel events scheduled every day (like a bbq or game night), which is a great way to meet other travelers. They're totally optional, but I highly recommend making one of them. We met so many cool people, which let us following a group from the UK to a boat cruise on the river. It was amazing. Great service, cheap nightly prices, very clean, friendly open environment, and even a open bar with happy hour. It's in a pretty great location, which was not far from the central station. Talk about a travelers paradise.

The hostel was a little tricky to find at first--mainly because I couldn't figure out where Old Town Square was. The directions they give on the hostelworld website were pretty good, but I would add that when you get off at the Mustek stop you should turn right at the New Yorker. Once you have acclimated yourself to the city you realize that the hostel is in a great location-- situated between Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. I stayed in a 5 person room and half the time I was there it was empty so I had the room to myself! (Keep in mind I visited in November.) There is a common area with a tv and some comfy couches, a kitchen area, and bathrooms on every floor. The downside to the place was that there was a women's bathroom on every floor except on the third floor where I was staying :( The place was pretty safe as you needed a code to get in and all rooms locked with a key. There was free wifi available, but on the third floor it barely worked- I figured it was the price I paid staying in a such a cool building. Finally, the people who worked at the hostel were great! Everyone was super helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The last night I was there I was even offered a wake up call in the morning-- which had I not taken him up on his offer, I would have missed my flight! Totally recommend!!!

Patience! - They only take cash - Only cereals for breakfast and a ham cheese sandwich - No air conditioning (like most places in Prague) - Towels not included - Toilet paper... Not the best quality. Probably the most unique part of the place is a full calendar of weekly activities costing between free and just 2-3 euro. Free walking tours, beer tours, pub crawls, free communal dinners, etc. - they really have thought of a lot, and the staff who guide it are really quite good. The accommodation is basic, as you'd expect and as is the point of hostel life (other than the community element, of course. It's a big place and feels more like a hotel (6 floors, quite broad as well). That said, each morning we awoke to hallway noise because the walls aren't so thick. Invariably when we checked, it was the cleaning staff chatting away on cell phones right in the main hallway - not other guests. This was the most annoying part of our stay and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. Communal areas are well apportioned and probably the best effort at forcing people to chat with each other during their stay. Food storage is easy to manage and there's plenty of it. Left luggage is easy as well, and right in front of reception for easy monitoring. Coffee is cheap, and breakfast it's included for just 4 euros for everything, all you can eat. It's very central, and as a result not the cheapest hostel you'll find - a twin room for 2, en suite, ran us 75 euro per night. But again, if you're hotel people looking for a good hostel experience, this would certainly be it.

If you are looking for a quite place to sleep surrounded by professional, intellectual adults where you can keep to yourself Madhouse is NOT the place for you. However, if you are looking to bar crawl, play the most inappropriate drinking games you ever have and make a dozen of friends in just one night this is the absolute best place in the world for it. Shout out to Kurtis, Billy, Kira and the rest of the staff for always getting the good times rolling! Just know what you're looking for when booking. If you want a party hostel, this is the best I have ever stayed at, and I've stayed at easily over a dozen hostels. But be warned that if you aren't looking for a crazy fun time you'd definitely be best off staying elsewhere.

The crowd is definitely college kids to late 20's so everybody is in party mode and the hostel does a great job organizing gatherings. There's family dinner every night (~3 USD), pregame before an outing, and there's communal areas to socialize in -- it's pretty coool since the staff also hangs out with everybody. They have a policy where they only accept a max group of 4 people to encourage everybody to socialize. Upon check in, you get a complementary beer and every beer after that is about 20 CZK. There's also nightly events which include a boat party, bowling night, and drunk laser tag. Usually after an event, everybody will go to a bar and hang out. In terms of location, its located right next to the train/bus, making it easy to commute to/from the airport and it's about a 20 minute walk to Prague Castle. Each room has a different mural and the beds/mattress are from IKEA. There's a cleaning lady which comes in every morning so it's pretty well kept. Overall, a great place to meet people with awesome staff. I highly recommend Madhouse if you're looking to meet people and partay.

And I guess the only reason I can't give one star is because it's a hostel and we should all know not to expect too much of them. The Good: - The room we had was spacious and nice. Had two windows and great airflow. It was nice to see one of these old Prague buildings from the inside out. - It's cheap! It was literally the cheapest hostel we found in Prague and is still relatively close to the tram-line where you can get to everything else. The Bad: - You enter and it smells like feet. Moldy, mildewy feet smell pervades the entryway and the common area. Typical hostel? I guess the staff was used to it. - Not to code? Well, honestly I have no idea what building codes are like in Europe but there were no constant-on hallway lights. Can't tell you how many walls we hit on the way to the room. And the toilet leaked so much in the bathroom we were standing in water. Bring some grippy flip-flops in there or you will slip and bust your ass. - Must have cash! You can pay for your room with credit/debit card if you want but they will charge you 4% to do so. Nevermind that if you're a US citizen you probably already pay a percentage to your bank for using your card abroad. Ans still, you need to have 200 CZ in cash as a "deposit". You'll get it back in the morning, but if you can't find your bank here, you'll pay a non-bank ATM fee for withdrawing and another percentage of that amount. It may be cheap but in the long run as the costs added up I wish I had looked at other hostel options first... and... The Ugly: - The front desk staff. Not sure where you guys learned your bedside manner and communication skills but it just doesn't make sense to me that a hostel or hotel would have such antisocial and downright rude desk staff. If you don't like working here and meeting and engaging with visitors GTFO. There are probably plenty of other folks who'd like to fill your shoes. Nuf sed.
