I will start off by saying that I'm a recent transplant from California. Generally, our DMVs are…read morevery crowded and staffed with unsmiling, often unhelpful people, with few exceptions. Lines and wait times tend to be very long. Making my first trip to an ID DMV, the bar was set very low. I made an appointment at this location, because though I have a Star address, we're in an unincorporated area and part of Canyon County. My appointment was at 9 am this morning. I showed up a little early, all of my necessary documentation in hand. I was greeted by a smiling and friendly woman that cheerfully informed me that, because of my making an appointment, I moved ahead of 13 people already in line. So far so good, right? I sat down, but didn't have to wait more than 5 minutes before I was called up to window 1. A very nice woman helped me. She received all of my documentation. The only hitch was the possibility that I would be asked to provide a newer, more clear birth certificate because the "D" in my middle name, David, was not visible, due to wear and tear of my document. However, what my birth certificate shows clearly is "avid", so I'm not too concerned. I was directed to go the the area of computers on the other side of the relatively small room. She gave me good instructions for taking the written test. I sat down, had no issues, and was required to get 34 out of 40 correct. I achieved this after the 37th question, and didn't have to answer the last three. I went back to the nice woman at window 1 and was issued a paper copy of my new ID driver's license. I'm to get my Real ID driver's license card in the mail in about 14 days. Easy peasy. I can't speak for the other DMVs in the Treasure Valley, but the one in Caldwell is aces.

I've had a car sitting I signed a document said it was sitting and I didn't have insurance but it's sitting and they were good with that. But why are they searching databases to see if we have insurance. When there's no crime committed I'm not stopped by an officer. Legally I don't have to hand over anything unless I've committed a crime. I'm being accused by the computer that I don't have insurance. I don't need insurance if the car is parked. I'm trying to figure out their reasonable articulated suspicion. For sending me this nasty letter threatening to take my property I paid for. Overly illegal search done by a computer that accuses me of violating a lie never broke. Why are we wasting all this taxpayer money sending letters out. When nobody committed any crime. You need to stop someone alongside the road that's violating the law not make up laws as you go

Moving from California to Idaho meant I finally had to register my car here before my out-of-state…read moreregistration expired at the end of the month. I called the Franklin office to find out what I needed, and the woman who answered was incredibly pleasant and helpful. She explained that because I'm still making payments on my vehicle, I could only register it for one year instead of two (if you own your vehicle outright, you can register it for up to two years). She also let me know I'd need to bring my current registration, driver's license, and the actual vehicle for a VIN inspection. She suggested making an appointment online before coming in. I figured I'd be waiting several days for an appointment, but to my surprise, I logged onto the website around 2:00 p.m. and was able to book a 3:00 p.m. appointment that same day! Since I wanted to stop by Trader Joe's afterward, the Meridian location made perfect sense. I arrived just a few minutes after 3:00 p.m. The office is tucked away in a corner next to a kids store, so I was a little confused at first, but thankfully I rely on my GPS for everything. Once inside, I scanned the QR code from my appointment at the welcome kiosk, received my number, and found a seat among about 20-30 people in the waiting area. I had barely been sitting for a minute before my number was called. I honestly thought, "Today must be my lucky day!" Travis helped me with my registration from start to finish, and he was fantastic. He explained everything clearly, answered all of my questions, and even helped me with my personalized license plates. The plate combination I originally wanted wasn't available, so he suggested another option that I actually like even more. Now I can't wait for my new plates to arrive! This was my very first DMV experience in Idaho, and it couldn't have gone more smoothly. The office was clean, the process was quick and organized, and Travis provided outstanding customer service. If every DMV experience were like this, no one would dread going! Welcome to Idaho, indeed!

So considering the dreary days these folks have to endure I'm inclined to give a high rating just for showing up to work every day. I was stunned at how many people they process every hour. There is a smaller, "express" DMV just a mile or so away. Almost every client I saw was very young so don't know what's going on in Boise. Their processes are highly automated and reasonably efficient. They get you in and out fairly quickly and with a minimum of fuss. The staff are clearly not happy people but I'd chalk that up more to their environment than anything else. Once they punch out and hit the bar with friends they could well be the life of the party. The Ada County Sheriff has done a very good job building an efficient operation so kudos and five starts for that.

The staff was extremely friendly, respectful, and helpful throughout the entire process. Everything was well-organized and moved faster than we expected. Important note for those moving from out of state (especially California): This office only helps with driver licenses and ID cards. They do not process vehicle registrations. For that, you'll need to go to: Ada County DMV Meridian Branch, 1769 N Lakes Pl #100, Meridian, ID 83646 Also, if you're moving from California (and possibly other states), be aware that you must take a written knowledge test on the computer, even if you've been driving for decades with a clean record. Overall, this office made what could have been a stressful task feel simple and welcoming. A big thanks to the team for making our transition to Idaho so smooth.
