My daughter is a senior in high school and is trying to get into college. She tried to take the SATs last year and everything was cancelled in 2020. She has applied to a Florida college and in order to get accepted, she needs to have her SAT or ACT scores in by the end of February (Florida is the only state NOT waving test scores at this point). The next SAT test is not going until late March, so we signed up ACT offering in February 2021. We paid the fee and got everything set.
The test was set for today (Saturday, February 6th) and Friday night we checked to make sure everything was ready - printed out the admission ticket, made sure the colleges to send test scores were set, and got a good night's sleep. My daughter woke up early and checked her emails to find an email from ACT delivered at 5 am stating that it was her last chance to set which colleges would get her scores. So, we got her set with a good breakfast and she arrived at the testing school on the admission ticket to find that no one had any idea about the ACT offering at the school on Saturday. There were four other students at the school looking for the test as well. Finally, my daughter pulled up her ACT account to see that the testing site was moved across town. Everyone made a mad dash for the new testing location. Upon arrival, they test proctors were behind locked gates at the entrance to the school and would not let anyone in since the "test had already started." My daughter googled a contact number so she could call the ACT office number in Iowa and, after being on hold for a while, got through to a lady who stated that the site changed FRIDAY NIGHT and no one was informed. My daughter headed home and picked me up, then we turned right around and started hunting for answers. I called the ACT office number numerous times only to get a recording that disconnects the call after saying that they were too busy to answer the phone and that I need to send an email and they will try and get back to us within 24 hours. The is the day of a national test and they have no logistics in place to help out if there is an issue.
We arrive at the testing location to a locked gate with no way to enter the school, so I start shaking the gate until someone finally comes out to see what is going on. I let them know that I want to talk to someone from ACT to get some answers and the only thing the lady behind the gate will say is that there are only "independent contractors" working the test and no one has any ties to ACT. Now, even an independent contractor gets paid by ACT, so by default, you are working for, and a representative of, ACT. I tell them they better find someone quick who can answer some questions and she walks off. The lady comes back and finally says that all I can do is call the main number in Iowa. Of course, I tell her that all that does is go to a recording that tells you to send an email and then hangs up on you.
So, now my daughter is in a position where she cannot take an SAT or ACT test prior to the admission deadlines of Florida schools (Florida is the only state that has not waived test requirements for admissions this year), which means she may lose a year of college since her scores will no longer arrive before March. Also, she can't apply to scholarships that require SAT/ACT scores prior to their deadlines in February.
I finally get the ACT call center on the phone and they basically tell me there is nothing they can do. All we can do is reschedule the test or request a refund. They also state that the kids are supposed to check their emails two times a day for the week prior to the test (that was not written anywhere). When I told them we DID check emails the morning of the test, they replied that we should have checked the account the morning of the test to see if our test site changed (again, no written notice of this).
The ACT testing company is incompetent and does not even have ACT people on site when the tests are being held. On the day of a "national" test they do not have the logistics in place to handle any issues that are caused by ACT themselves. They have no desire to help the people that are paying them money to take the test so that they can attend college. ACT does not care if they impact someone's future livelihood or financial ability to graduate college. I would like to warn people that the ACT is a worthless organization that needs to be avoided at ALL costs. read more
