This happened again last night after arriving in Corsica - and feeling hungry for one of my favourite foods- Mussels! Or, as the French call them- moules frites. We ended up at Chez Alain just as a magnificent sunset was being painted on the horizon. The menu had two pages of Mussels- my son and I went for plates of Indienne and Corsoise. I usually dislike hyperbole, and I would not blame you, reading this review, for raising your eyebrows now. But these mussels at Chez Alain are to die for- because when you eat them you will think you had died and gone to heaven. And that is all I have to say about Chez Alain in Corsica.

I walked here from St Francois beach and had a pleasant lunch on the outdoor patio. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, outdoor is smoking friendly so just be aware of that. I ordered the seafood salad, which was delicious and so different in a good way from what I'm used to back in the USA. I finished off the meal with an espresso which was rich and creamy even by French standards. Service was a little slow but extremely friendly and it was the lunch rush so I don't fault them.

The restaurant is located at the beach with a generous parking area. Which is needed as the restaurant is packed after 9 p.m. The menu includes the typical local fish dishes as well as the beef dishes. The meals are exquisite. Alone the mashed potatoes which came with our fish were the best we had in a long time. Also the selection of (local) wine was quite large and tasty. The waiters are really friendly and competent. And - not so common on Corsica - fluent in English. One downside which is unfortunately shared with all restaurants in Corsica (or at least with all beach restaurants) is that all of them allow smoking in the whole restaurant. And it seemed that all locals smoke. There was not a single table without smokers (except our's obviously). But as this was true for all restaurants I did not include it in my rating.

Dinner #1: Complimentary ANTIPASTI MISTO SALUMI E FORMAGGI (platter of local cured meats, cheeses and bread). All the fish and seafood dishes were fresh and cooked to perfection. SPAGHETTI ALLE VONGOLE (spaghetti w/ sweet little clams); FRITTO MISTO CALAMARI E GAMBERI (calamari & prawns deep fried in light batter); PESCE ALLE GRIGLIA (grilled catch of the day). Meal ended with a delicious Sardinian dolce called SEADAS, a crisp airy pastry filled with sweet soft cheese and drizzled with golden Sardinian honey. A perfect end to the meal and worth ordering even if you're so full you swear you couldn't eat another bite. You can. I promise. Dinner #2: Fresh caught SPIDER CRAB 2 ways, first course was a simple yet divine crab broth with crab roe and fregola (small pasta similar to couscous) followed by the main course of fresh whole crab. The pure white crab meat was sweet and soft like a salty sea mascarpone cream. As delicious as it was I could have just eaten a whole pot of the crab soup and died happy. Gloriously happy. Dinner #3: MAIALINO ARROSTO (roasted suckling pig). This was the single most delicious meal of pork I have ever tasted in my entire life. Salty-crisp skin that shatters between your teeth like glass and rich, moist, tender meat that melts like butter. The suckling pig we ate that night fulfilled its life's purpose when it arrived in maestro Lino's kitchen. I cannot over-emphasize how perfect a meal it was, accompanied only by a platter of mixed grilled vegetables. If you eat only 1 meal in Sardegna, let it be the maialino arrosto at Lino's trattoria!!! Dinner #4: TRUFFLES!! Meal began with ANTIPASTI MISTO (heirloom tomato dressed in olive oil and aged red wine vinegar, assorted cheeses, olives, bread). 1st course was room temp POACHED EGGS with gloriously runny golden yolks and grated *black* truffles. 2nd course was warm poached eggs with grated *white* truffles. Most decadent poached eggs of my life. 3rd course was al dente TAGLIATELLE tossed in olive oil, butter, and more grated truffles! The simple pasta seasoned to taste with salt & fresh ground black pepper was a perfect showcase for the rich, earthy flavour of Sardinian truffles from Laconi City. Just when I thought I couldn't eat another bite, Lino placed a 4th dish on the table: BRAISED BABY GOAT RIBS.... with shaved truffles! Not only do I adore goat, but this was the most tender, succulent goat meat I've ever tasted. The ribs were plated in a pool of bright red-orange drippings which initially made me a bit apprehensive. By the end, I was using the last crusts of bread to soak up the glorious fat drippings and savour just one last bite before surrendering defeat. We finished our last meal with espressos and an ice cold shot of MIRTO before rolling ourselves up the hill to bed. Not only is the food delicious but Lino and Marlitha make guests feel as warm and welcome as family. Even their adorable dog Daisy filled the empty spot under the table where our own pups usually sit. Despite speaking limited Italian, we were honoured to share a glass of wine with our hosts and enjoyed several animated evenings of conversation, proving that excellent food can bridge language, culture, and country. It has been over two years since we ate at this restaurant, and I still fantasize about it…read more We stumbled across this gem on a casual drive to Grosseto-Prugna and decided to take our chances. Lady Luck smiled on us that afternoon--apparently she, too, had just eaten there--as we settled into a meal that can only be described as divine. I started with the Corsican salad, which was sprinkled with ham and coppa divinity. If I hadn't been so thoroughly famished I would have stopped there and died a happy man ... but then my stomach DM'd me to say that we weren't done. We were seated near the wood burning fireplace, where the chef would bring cuts of meat to cook like it was the 18th century. A Rome, fais comme les Romains! I had a steak (medium-rare) with all of the trimmings, and what I recall to be some sort of cacciatore style sauce. The service was slow, deliberate, and thoughtful. The bread was piping hot and delicious. Nothing was rushed, because there's no rational reason on the planet to rush a meal like this. The heavens want you to slow down, put your phone away (mine turned itself off out of respect), and take in the smell of the fireplace and the feats of culinary magic wafting through the air.
