The wife and I stayed at the Carolina Inn for their wonderful Thanksgiving Day Buffet and in the couple of days we were here some places were closed, so what should we do? Well there was a sign on the sidewalk that mentioned the AAM and that it was always free. So what the hay?! The wife is Tar Heel Born and Bred and I am Wed, and she said she had not been in the museum since she was in school there a few years ago (lol). So we walked in to have a look and what some wonderful pieces and they were predominately of Far East Art and Culture and WOW! If you look at the pictures ( I tried to match with the description when I added them) you will see they were pretty amazing. 2 Floors of art the current show on 1, and 2nd floor of notable artist. What a way to take an hour + to enhance your life with art and what the artist may consider important in this moment in their life. Don't go in and just look, but examine the details of what ever exhibit maybe there, some works are just so amazing, the amount of detail. I Will tell you again, "it was Free!". We will be back again to see what they have to offer over and over.

This art museum is affiliated with UNC Chapel Hill, which means parking is always going to be a problem if you go during the week. We visited during Christmas break so we were able to park relatively close. They pack a lot of different exhibits, both temporary and permanent, into a relatively small space. You won't do a ton of walking, but you will be exposed to different types of art, from modern to European, Asian, Middle Eastern and African. Oh, and it's absolutely free, although you can leave a donation. There's also a small gift shop with some interesting items. Worth a visit if you enjoy art museums and have an hour or two to peruse the exhibits and read the educational descriptions.

This is a nice little art museum located on The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. Admission is free! I visited the Yayoi Kusama:Open the Shape Called Love exhibition. Other exhibits include ancient Mediterranean and European art, Asian, Islamic, and African artists. They have a really cute gift shop. www.ackland.org @acklandart

Like I said in my tip, calling this place a gem is an understatement. I liken it to a very miniature version of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. Inside is a very well laid series of collections partitioned by geographic origin and era. There are a few famous names, but instead of getting caught up looking for any masterpiece,  I appreciated the way the items were attractively showcased.  You don't need much time here, so all the more reason to include it when nearby. Oh yeh, it's free too.

It's worth a visit especially for interesting changing exhibits. UNC art students and other enthusiasts enjoy drawing in the galleries, yoga, music and dance performances and other art adventures. Donations are voluntary.

Looked a lot like paint ball art!

I can't think of anything negative to say about the Ackland Art Museum. We've been twice and will return again. So many beautiful pieces of various types, The docents (if that's what they're called) or guards (if that's the word) are very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Mr. Ackland is actually buried in the museum, and his story is very interesting! I think the painting(s) that caught my attention most this visit was a large installation that looked a lot like paint ball art.

Photo vision exhibit is quite interesting- a variety of photographic methods including fotescultura, albumen prints, lithographs and gelatin prints and more

But this place is quite expansive with several areas including wildlife, butterfly and insect garden, a train tour that takes 2 laps around (might as well get it for the $6 a ticket), and several outdoor play areas including a tree house and mist/water areas. Place was crowded, but there were still plenty of spaces available at 10:30 in the garage. If I lived closer, I might consider a membership to save costs, but I live too far currently to justify that. The cafe food was mid, and again too expensive. The pricing for me knocks a star off, but if you've never been and are prepared to spend a couple hundred bucks for the day on a family of 4, you'll probably enjoy!

There is a lovely wildlife area, butterfly garden, fun little train tour, an outdoor treehouse, and more. The price was quite high, but I imagine based on the number of staff and the animals that this location is quite expensive to maintain. The little gift shop was also great with lots of children's games, clothing items, toys, and more. If I was in the area I would definitely consider an annual pass. All of the staff were lovely from the train driver to the ticket takers. Fun location!

Duke Gardens is definitely one of the most beautiful gardens in Durham, if not the Triangle. Open…read morefrom dawn to dusk, it's welcoming to all. The best time of year to go in my opinion is during the Spring and especially during the Cherry Blossom season, which only lasts less than a week if not that. During that time, it can be super duper crowded, with people everywhere trying to get the perfect profile pic and/or selfie in. Weddings are held here and they have a beautiful area for it, along with a pond with lily pads. I have friends who have gotten engaged here, although if you're a professional photographer, you need to have permission. During the summer, they have a summer concert series on the lawn and it's so much fun. My friends I would bring snacks, wine, coolers and picnic blankets. Partaking in those concerts was one of the most fun parts of my summers, so nostalgic. Parking is a bit much (as it's sometimes hard to snag) but there are a few overflow lots to accommodate. One of my favorite parts of Duke Gardens it that you can also access Duke Campus across the road, and see the lovely Duke Chapel, and its beautiful cathedral. Once done, you can re-enter the Gardens and continue your trail. Such a lovely stroll. Once you cross the red bridge, you can also find your way to the farm, where there are animals, vegetation and lots of vegetables and herbs in a sweet garden. You can't really get too lost at Duke Gardens which I appreciate. Just keep going and eventually you will find your way back to the main fountain. Enjoy!

The gardens are especially notable for their beautiful Japanese-themed areas, featuring an abundance of Japanese Maples and even Fuyu persimmons, which I would have loved to pick if they weren't so high up (maybe next time!). There are numerous pathways for strolling, and the gardens regularly host events such as weddings, educational programs, and seasonal festivals. Visitors can enjoy both formal, carefully curated landscapes like the Historic Gardens, as well as informal, naturalized areas that resemble a backyard wildlife garden, perfect for relaxing, taking photos, or simply enjoying a peaceful retreat from the busy world. Overall, Duke Gardens is a must-visit for anyone in the area, an accessible, beautiful, and educational space that offers a tranquil escape and a chance to connect with nature.

This place is like a magical wonderland for kids! They have the largest art room I've ever seen--seriously, it's big enough to host a small art heist! And guess what? Everything in there is free to use with the cost of admission! I felt like I hit the jackpot! Plus, there's a rock climbing wall, which is a nice touch. Nothing says "family fun" like watching your kids scale a wall while you sip your coffee and contemplate your life choices! The place is decked out with fun artwork and quirky characters that make it feel like a playground straight out of a storybook. And they even have a treehouse! I half-expected to find a squirrel in a top hat serving snacks up there! Located in a shopping plaza, this spot is perfect for hitting up before or after errands. Who knew you could combine grocery shopping with a mini adventure? I highly recommend taking your kiddos here for a day filled with fun and laughter. It's a win-win for parents and kids alike--because a tired child is a happy child!
