But don't get me wrong, the centre still boasts a large collection of big stores such as Poundland, WHSmith and Iceland, which are all greatly needed for the Northfield locals. It means that they don't have to travel elsewhere for their necessities. The overall aesthetics of Northfield's precinct are very outdated and generic, however, the actual shops themselves are varied when compared to the usual shopping centres of Brum. It's the independent shops that make the centre different, and there's a great collection of clothes stores for all ages and genders, from the men's shop Little Italy, to the girl's clothes accessories shop Miss Bizybody. I was quite surprised at the actual size of the centre, and expected it to be much smaller for the area (considering that there's quite a few shops on the Bristol Road outside as it is.) The centre is a great find, and is definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

For me it is not the best place to go clothes shopping but it is great for Poundland, Superdrug, Peacocks, Iceland, WH Smith amongst many more. I love wandering through the forecourt and shop, admiring the great selection of cut flowers in a whole miriad of colours. You'll be spoilt for choice with the range of flowers from the unusual & exotic to traditional country flowers, but don't worry there are always plenty of staff on hand to advise you - they're so helpful and have been very patient while I keep changing my mind as to what I'm looking for! I've bought flowers for all sorts of occasions - including Christmas, birthdays and colleagues' leaving presents - and they're always gorgeous and very reasonably priced for the high quality you get. They also have a selection of readymade bouquets and stock all sorts of extras like potted plants, teddies, chocolate, champagne, balloons, vases and fruit baskets. The Flower Centre takes telephone orders every day from 7am until 10pm (except Saturdays when it's 8pm), although the shop itself is shut on Sundays. They deliver in south Birmingham, and are part of Interflora so can arrange for flowers to be delivered across the world. It's located on Bristol Road South opposite Northfield Shopping Centre (which used to be called the Grovesnor). There is free short-stay parking along the road and plenty of paid parking in the shopping centre. Whether you're in a hurry to pick up flowers, want a floral display for your wedding or are looking for a gift, this shop is ideal.

They cater for a variety of events and even boast about how they can deal with occasions on a short notice, which I think is useful for those times when you completely forget a birthday or an anniversary. As well as flowers they all sell accompanying gifts such as chocolates and champagne. I think that this is a lovely touch as then you can give someone more than just flowers. When I have been in it has only been to purchase a simple bouquet, but I have always found the staff friendly and very attentive. I have always been a happy customer. This place is definitely worth a visit!

This independently run…read morestore is situated directly opposite Aldi Supermarket on Bristol Road, Northfield Town Centre. The inside of the shop is nothing fancy time looks as though it has stood still here for a long time. However, the shop is packed with nearly every conceivable household item you could imagine (excluding furniture and appliances). If you are familiar with Latif and Sons in Birmingham City Centre, think of this shop of a condensed version of the same type of store. Another way of describing it is as 'Northfield's General Store' - everything from kitchenware, cleaning products, garden, diy, computer and automotive accessories are in stock at very reasonable prices. I managed to buy a bunch of last minute Christmas presents here this last year and I had never thought a shop on Northfield could offer such choice, quality and value. The couple who run the shop are lovely too; very friendly. Also, If there is something you are after and they don't stock it, they are happy to source it for you. Often I have bought items from larger stores and supermarkets only to find the same products sold here at a cheaper price. I now usually pop in and check here first if I am after something in particular before shopping around It saves the disappointment! Definitely recommended, especially if you are setting up home and need a local, independent shop to buy the basics!

It's a much better shop than chain toy shops like Toys R Us and places like that because it doesn't stock the latest bestselling toy, concentrating more on tried and tested toys and games. I would definitely rather browse Roys Toys than any massive multi storey toy store. It's almost old fashioned inside with metal shelving, beautifully laid out in a higgledy piggledy way which adds so much charm to the shop it's untrue! Here you can buy Barbie, Hot Wheels, Furby, Sylvanian Families, Top Trumps and everything really that has been loved in years gone by for a new generation to discover. I love this aspect of the shop because it means that not everything takes a multitude of batteries to use, also I love the fact that my daughters' can play with similar toys that I knew and loved as a little girl. The prices in Roys Toys are what you would pay in any other toy shop, which surprised me actually as it has such a quirky feel that I had assumed I would be paying a premium to shop in an out of the way toy shop like this. They cater for people with a variety of hobbies and much of the shop is dedicated towards people who collect model trains, use art and craft materials and there is even a section selling Scoobies to get young children into artsy hobbies. The more expensive models are situated in glass cabinets, which is only reasonable as some of the trains in particular are worth a lot of money. The staff are excellent; they obviously have a love for the toys and are comfortable with children which enhances the shopping experience for the kids. They are happy with kids playing with the display models and I didn't feel that my children were being nuisances when they asked to see specific toys, there was never any pressure to buy anything and the gentleman who served us made sure my kids' were 100% certain they were choosing the right things. I will continue to shop at Roys Toys and will definitely be doing quite a bit of my Christmas shopping here this year, the service is fantastic and all of toys are of the highest quality. I can't fault the shop at all.

Domestiks is an ex-catalogue shop in Fairfax which is known locally for its excellent range of…read morestock and fantastic prices. From the outside it doesn't look very big, but once you get through the door you'll soon realise it's a massive shop which holds absolutely loads of stock. The main things Domestiks sells is clothing. It's all well arranged by style and size, obviously because it's an ex-catalogue shop you have to take pot luck of whatever they have at any one time but there are always a very good selection in sizes 8 to outsize. I think the childrens clothes in particular are excellent, there is a brilliant choice in the baby clothes right up to stuff for the more discerning teenager. I regularly pop in to buy my 17 month old daughter some stuff and the items available are of the highest quality and very up to date. The ladies clothes are superb too; smart suits, jeans, jumpers, swimming costumes and summer dresses jostle for space on the rails. Everything is clearly laid out in size order and I find the sizes to be very accurate so I can go in and pick something off the rail and be confident that it will fit when I get it home. There isn't much choice in mens clothing to be honest, but I assume this is because men don't buy so much from catalogues hence less stock returned. My fella did buy a very smart suit from here recently for a works do we had to attend, the suit was marked up as costing £115 in the catalogue but he paid only £40 for it and it's in brand new condition and even had the little plastic clips on the suit jacket cuffs which suggests it hasn't even been tried on! This saving is typical of Domesticks, on smaller clothing items you can expect to save a few pounds but it's the more exclusive items that are most drastically marked down. They also have baskets of socks, tights, underwear and t-shirts which generally cost around £1 - £1.50, it's worth having a rummage through these baskets as there are often some brilliant savings to be found. As well as clothes Domesticks sells a range of homewares, toys and shoes. I personally don't think the shoes are good as they always seem to be very old fashioned and some of them don't really look new. The toys are great though and I often go in before Christmas and birthdays to see what I can pick up for the kids'. Just this morning I went into Domestiks and bought my baby daughter a rocking horse which originally would have cost me £75 but had been reduced to just £25! Bargain, and she'll absolutely love it. You can buy a small selection of watches and clocks here, they are all very nicely priced although I don't really have anyone to buy these things for - my 12 year old is coveting a Playboy clock for her bedroom so I might just go and buy one of those before Christmas. I'd definitely recommend Domestiks to anyone living in South Birmingham who can get to Fairfax, the sheer range of clothes makes this my first port of call whenever I am going clothes shopping because the savings to be had are amazing and the range of clothing is at least as good as any other clothes shop!
