Porta potties conveniently on the way to the lake. They have push trailers to get the boats down. The lake was beyond gorgeous. The price was set right $38 for 3 hours. This is the perfect activity to experience Maine. So where this company really shined was the staff going over and beyond for our family today. I had the tragic luck of dropping the rental car keys into the lake a mile out from the launch site. I could not see the keys in the dark water. I luckily had my phone on me and the attendant was quick to help. He said they have a rescue boat and they could come and help. The owner of the company and his employee Andy came in a motor boat to save the day. Andy offered to jump into the cold water and try to find my keys. It was too dark for him to see very far in front of him with the googles but I was beyond appreciative for his efforts. My panic set in as I was now stranded in the middle of nowhere with two kids and no idea what to do. They patiently waited for me to contact the rental company to figure out next steps. They offered to pull the canoe back to the front so we could figure out our rental situation. When we got back Andy pulled our canoe in, which usually you have to bring in your own boat. Again, over and beyond. Later, the tow company let us into our vehicle to get our personal items but I still had no way back. I downloaded Uber but I could not find a ride. I asked the tow driver if he could drive us and he said he wasn't going that way. The owner of National Park Canoe offered to drive us himself about 20 mins back to our motel and saved our day again. I could not appreciate these Angels more. Not only are you receiving a great experience at National Park Canoe; you are supporting a small business that has warm, kind, generous souls that deserve your business. I cannot thank these men enough for helping in any manner they could think of. Thank you thank you. We didn't actually touch a kayak until 1 hour after the tour was supposed to start. So unless you are mentally challenged and/or have the patience of a saint, skip the intro if at all possible. Once we got out on the water we had a perfect day and a beautiful kayak tour. The gear is all relatively new and, if not, very well maintained. No gripes there. If you have kayaked a lot before or own your own kayaks you will be severely annoyed at the pace of the introduction and tour, but I can't entirely blame them as they are catering to the lowest common denominator as far as experience and athletic ability. And there aren't many other outfitters (if any at all) that leave right from the main dock in the harbor.

My partner and I visited the Acadia area for Labor Day weekend - during COVID so no surprise that…read morethe whole world had also descended upon rural Maine that weekend. We hadn't made any reservations for activities ahead of time, so the morning we decided we wanted to paddleboard, I was a bit nervous in case all the businesses in operation were already booked up. I called 10+ places with no luck, then stumbled upon The Activity Shop's number. Turned out to be our lucky day - The Activity Shop is located ~1 hour outside Acadia, so they didn't seem to be inundated with tourists. The owner (I think), Chris, worked with us on the phone to figure out the details of our reservation - and he is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He took the time to explain everything - the best area to paddleboard, when to go to avoid low tide, safety tips, etc. The place he recommended, Blue Hill Harbor, was devoid of other tourists and amazingly gorgeous - we felt like we owned our own slice of paradise. The boards we rented were high-quality. They seem to only offer full-day rentals which can be a bit pricey ($65 per board) but I liked not having the pressure of having to return the boards within a certain amount of time. We played around as long as we wanted and when we were done, we could just leave the boards by the dock and let the Activity Shop know we were done - super easy. Definitely recommend The Activity Shop if you are looking to rent kayaks / canoes / paddleboards near Acadia - a much better experience than the tourist traps in Bar Harbor!

My wife and I decided to go with him because he was a lot more flexible than his competitors, Old Quarry. First of all, Peter basically catered the tour to our needs. Second of all, his prices were worth the small group attention. Third, Old Quarry has a terrible website and Peter's is great. We have both kayaked before, so we wanted something half-day that would provide a short intro and then get us into some small coves. What we got was wonderful. First, Peter went over sea kayaking safety and the game plan (To be honest, this part needs to be shortened up, but I think that will happen organically as the season progresses). Then, we took the boats down and put into the water at Naskeag Point. We kayaked around and went to Sellers Island for lunch. Peter told us all about the islands and about this cool kayak trail they have where you can camp for free on these small islands. We wandered some more after lunch and started heading back. We asked Peter about his experiences on El Camino - he has some amazing stories! When we got back to his house, he let us shower and stuff before heading to our B&B up the road for dinner. You can book rooms at the house and we would have done this if we'd known about it before we booked our other accommodations. It was really a lovely trip, and we hope to pass through again someday.

I am not an expert, but his equipment was top notch, which made the paddling easy and our experience more comfortable. I had been worried that our younger son would lose steam, and he was usually out ahead! I can't recommend Peter enough and we hope we are lucky enough to do another trip with him at some point.

Rich took our family on a full day tour of Bar Harbor/Acadia. The kids are ages 7 and 9 and he…read moreadjusted the content of the tour based on the likes and dislikes of my kids that I described to him over the phone prior to arriving. We started the morning on 1+ hour hike through a spruce forest to arrive at the edge of a cove. Seals were in the water and birds in the distance. We literally didn't see a single other person on the hike which is incredible given that it was high season (August). It was a testament to Rich's knowledge of the island. We did visit Sieur de Monts Spring and did a flat loop walk on the long boardwalk trail which was also fairly deserted given its proximity to the tour buses pouring tourists out in front of the nature museum there. Lastly, we made a visit to a tidal pool where we spent a solid 2 hours in the water looking under every rock for starfish, crabs, sea anemones, sea urchins and snails galore. Rich knew each species and explained the good and the bad (green crabs -- invasive, not good; Jonah crabs - native, good) Rich did all of the driving and it made for a relaxing exposure to Bar Harbor/Acadia that we would've never been able to do as quickly on our own.
