He makes you feel as if you're his only patient taking whatever time is needed to answer any questions and keep you informed of the treatment plans. My husband came to the center unable to walk because of spine surgery and with a diagnosis of a blood disorder.  As a result of Dr. Thorpe's thoroughness, it turned out that there was no blood disorder.  The usual blood tests provided inaccurate results. The physical and occupational therapists were equally caring and skilled. The therapies had him walking and slowly becoming self sufficient. The nursing care cannot be praised enough.They were always responsive to his needs and often checked in just to see how he was doing. Our care navigator, Ms. Enitan Macarthy worked to maintain quality care and made the transition home seamless. This started with a 3 fusion neck spine, Inova Alexandria Hospital then Inova Mount Vernon (IMV)…read morethen Alexandria Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center (ARHC). At IMV I had one-on-one with PT (physical therapy), OT (occupational therapy) and SLP (speech language pathology) therapies, eight days, 21 hours. If I am wrong and the first day did not have any therapies then there were "only" 18 hours. That is real rehabilitation. ARHC is not rehabilitation. There were seven full days, the first was Friday and and absolutely no therapy on that Friday. All ARHC therapies are half hours. l add two more just to help things so there are better; that's 4 hours. To make it "fair" I'll chop off one IMV day to get them equal; that's 15 hours. ARHC is 27% compared for the same numbers of days. Rehabilitation? At ARHC I do not know if there is any SLP at ARHC; I did not get any SLP. The PT and OT staff are pretty good but have an environment not easy. Most have two or some even have more than two patients and few patients are just sitting on a chair. The "gym" is small and and the equipment very few, not good. Two exercise bicycles, a new one where the hand bar and pedals have no connection, strange and never to use again. An older and much better but the LEDs all gone so the therapy used their cell phone and tells a few things while someone else is doing something slow and more time. Most of the time were with 3 pound dumbballs, watched and counted but after twice done almost alone. The balance board was also good with the therapy placed to catch if I stumbled or let me between two rails. I've had bowel problems. That cause was not the ARHC staff. The problem was that after the mess it took more than 10 minutes to not get help with the red button. There were about 30 feet from my door with about four staff were chatting real loud (if not screaming) and I left my door not wearing any pants going to the other end to the desk at the hall end. Someone caught me real fast (not physical) and got back to fix it. That helped clean me up but it took more than a day to get the toilet and floor "reasonably" clean but not really clean. The food was the worst I have ever had. To be honest I am very picky and that does not mean that I what I like is what most people do like. But how could every patient get exactly the same thing that every one gets? How well do almost everyone think cooked food that is barely warm is OK. Some do actually have warm parts, but only in the middle and bottom on the plate, or you learn that you can get your plate heated in the microwave with those who bring and take the food. I like oatmeal cereal, when I cook it as the box says and use some milk and sugar. I tried them several times and spit them out. They were mostly cool not warm, sticky, tasteless, some lumpy, other times ground to nothing. I like scrambled eggs; these were OK and I ate all even if not warm. I ate about 20% of what I was willing the entire time I was there. The last full day I had a dizzy like never before and they put me in a wheelchair. They use a cuff and my heart was about 80/50 or 50/80. They sort of said I needed to eat if I wanted to live. I think that's enough. george.shaffer@comcast.net

I chose this location because it was 10 minutes from where I live. I was assigned to Bonnie who's one of the hand therapist. She immediately made me feel very welcomed. She has a great personality and just made me feel comfortable working with her. She listened to everything I had to say and reassured me that what I was feeling was typical in terms of what I was going through (carpal and radial tunnel syndrome). She explained everything we were doing in detail and always ensured I had everything I needed. After a few weeks I stopped therapy, had surgery, and chose to return to MedStar NRH Pasadena because of the wonderful experience I had. I once again started working with Bonnie and had, what I felt, was a continuation of the best care I've had. I still come here for physical therapy due to a shoulder issue (I'm all sorts of broken) and still work with Bonnie. I've gotten to know the front office staff and they are always so professional and nice. I really look forward to my appointments because each one has been such a pleasant experience. Knowing that one day I'll have to end my therapy does sadden me because I've bonded so well with Bonnie. If you're looking for physical/occupational therapy where the staff truly cares I highly recommend MedStar NRH Pasadena. I was attempted to have my father admitted into their skilled nursing care facility and they kept…read moretelling me that a 2014 workman's comp claim was halting his admittance as it was documented as his primary care insurance. I spoke to Medicare who confirmed that this claim was NOT his primary insurance. I also spoke with the workman's comp commission, who faxed them all of the pertinent information for him to be admitted. They still swore this was his primary insurer, which it is not! He was hit while driving a work truck and they awarded him a lifetime award for his knee injury, which is out of his control. The only way to have this removed is to have my father engage in a negotiation settlement. He is in the hospital and has been pending discharge for days! How can he engage in a settlement when he needs to help! 48 hours of efforts for them to tell me NO and for them to be unwilling to help- TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! Imagine someone without resources trying to navigate this difficult process, they should be ashamed-- they are supposed to help others, not make it worse!

We had problems with both the staff and the administration. Most of the nurse assistants were very nice and helpful but they are overworked & short staffed and my father would often be neglected by them. I would have to go find someone to assist him in urinating, etc., and that often turned into an extensive search as often not a single staff member was in sight. I am a male and one of the nurse assistants, a black lady named Sarah, made sexual advances towards me on several occasions. She would grab me in a bear hug and rub her body up against mine and attempt to kiss me on the neck. The first time it happened, I just pushed her off me and thought she got the message. The second time it happened I complained to the Social Services Director, a lady named Maureen, and told her what had transpired and that I was offended by it. Maureen was very rude and actually made a joke about it and said that was how Sarah shows affection. Sarah continued to work there even after this. Also my Dad had given Sarah some peanut brittle for Christmas and after it was gone, she started bugging him for more. She was relentless to the point where he really became upset by her persistence. I also complained to Maureen about this but as in the other issue, she just brushed it aside. I had elected to do my father's laundry instead of having it done on site by their laundry service. My father's clothes started disappearing and to the point where we lost about a dozen articles of clothing. Apparently even though I had notified them I would be doing the laundry, his clothes were still being picked up, taken to their laundry area and then mysteriously disappearing. When my father finally left the facility and came home, I wrote Heritage Hall a short letter regarding his missing clothes & that I would like them back but they never responded. Plenty other facilities to choose over this one and I would certainly not recommend Heritage Hall.
