I was in the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic District School Board system when I was younger. I was in a…read moreFrench immersion program at St. Marguerite d'Youville in Hunt club, with half my subjects in English with one teacher, and the other half in French with another teacher. At this time, the school has students from junior kindergarten to Grade 6. We were taught all of your standard subjects, like math, science, geography, history, music, art, and gym. We were also taught English, French grammar, Catholig religion, and sexual health. The sexual health education relied heavily on the Fully Alive textbooks, which were suited to the students' grade and age group. They also offered a Program for Gifted Learners (P.G.L./PGL), when children would be recommended by their teacher to take an aptitude test, and if their scores qualified, they would spend every Friday at another location, learning more advanced and creativity-focused material and activities. There were also a lot of interactive and mentally stimulating games and activities, many of which were really fun. We also had two recesses and a lunch break, which, of course, was everyone's favorite, since they let us kids play and take a break from all of that learning. The teachers and principal were more than memorable, some for better reasons than others. I had teachers that were terribly strict, far too nice, picked favorites, picked their noses, you name it. All in all, I had a really great elementary school education under the OCCDSB, and I only wish others experienced the same.
