I attended a 4 week city and guilds course (painting and decorating) in january 2011. The course was excellent and well worth doing, I also thought that the instructors were first class. Probably one of the best construction training centres in the Uk. read more

I've been meaning to write this review since my very first week at Able Skills, and feel a bit guilty about not doing it sooner, as I have always been very pleased with the high calibre of training and professionalism of all at Able Skills throughout. I embarked on the 'Gold Card' electrical package including the important 2330 and 2356 qualifications just before it became a Diploma. I finished my 2356 NVQ in October, though that was down to me not doing it sooner. Clive my NVQ Assessor processed it very quickly as soon as I handed it in, though he had been checking and guiding my collection of evidence, photos and written work through out. Right from the very start I knew I'd made the right choice for me of where and how to study - classroom based, and especially in terms of the advice they gave me on qualification pathway. When I was looking around about getting qualified as a spark there are a lot of companies out there selling different packages, its easy to get confused and pay a lot of money for a package of just the smaller qualifications by distance learning thinking you have got the same as being fully qualified and not getting good value for money either. The excellent good value clean self catering accommodation that Able Skills provides too also helped me choose them. The way the course was structured also meant I was able to keep working enough shifts to earn a reasonable living. I had the same teacher through all (except for one week) of my level 2 and 3 and 17th Ed. , building regs quals etc. There was a lot of snow over the winter I did my training, but my teacher was always there, and Able skills was always open what ever the weather. All the teachers and instructors (Including Steve the technician) were always friendly and enthusiastic, often giving their own time at break times, even if they weren't my actual teacher at the time, whether it to be explain some theory or go through something practical in the 'bays' downstairs. Even one of the plumbing teachers gave me some great advice about a problem I had with my boiler! Although I had done some data cabling work about 10 years prior, the electrical training was a career change for me from nursing/care work. Though the theory and practical was so well taught to such a high standard that I personally was able to learn enough to start doing some minor installation work (including new circuits) by my self as I was finishing off level 2. Though I did make sure I took out my own insurance and buy a calibrated multifunction tester so I could test my work and could then issue proper test certificates. We were taught to do things properly and be cautious throughout. We were also taught good theory to enable us to apply it and understand our installation work. I did my 2391 Inspection and Testing quite soon after I finished level 3. I was going to wait a while, but due to the fact that a lot of the regulations and theory (and safe procedures) were fresh in my mind (and we had a very good teacher) this helped me pass the difficult theory exam first time. I think they have now changed the 2391 qualification into two parts to make it easier. I guess what I am trying to say is that for me it was well worth doing the testing and inspecting qualification, it has certainly helped keep me employed in interesting work and with more responsibility and even when I have worked on large projects I've been the one doing the testing and inspection / commissioning above others that have many more years experience, but not a 'test and inspect' qualification. So far I have really enjoyed my work, for me it has all been sub contracting, but usually direct rather than through an agency, it just seems to have turned out his way and this has also given me the opportunity to squeeze in some of my own work (this is when I have used what I have learnt in training the most) and I haven't been out of work yet. On whole I have always got on well and had a (sensible) laugh with all the people I have worked with, and always made sure I learnt from / picked up a little knowledge from everyone, be they another sparky, supervisor, BMS engineer, contracts manager, designer/consultant or company director. So far I've worked on retail shops (small and very large stores),major airports, a Ministry of Defence project, a new 'recycling' power station, and done some local Council House rewires ('house bashing') too, making some good friendships along the way. I guess though the main reason I wanted to write this review though was after my initial experience of going through the minefield of available courses and training providers, and hard sell of unsuitable expensive options (one dodgy company even sent someone round my house!)... ... is to choose your course(s) and training provider carefully. I'm glad I did! PS I forgot to mention I passed my AM2 at Dartford too! read more

I thought that I would support Able Skills as I have just come to the end of a fantastic period of training, learning to be an Electrician. I have been at Able Skills for a year or so, on and off and have undergone various training courses which are needed for me to succeed as an Electrician. I have completed the C&G 2330 at both levels 2 and 3; I have my 17th Edition, have done C&G 2393 for Part P purposes and also C&G 2392 for Inspection and testing. I want to do the C&G 2391 at some stage but I'm going to wait a while and get some experience before I have a go at this particular Electrical course. My main reason for writing on here today is because I am a woman who has made the decision to switch from a lifetime as a Civil Servant to a career as an Electrician, something that has taken many years for me to decide upon. I was extremely nervous about starting the training, even though I had been down to look at Able Skills beforehand. When I went to look around, I hadn't made an appointment as I had been told on the phone to just turn up!! But when I got there I was made welcome, given time by everyone I met and was advised on all of the options that I would have available to me and was also given a tour of the workshops and classrooms. I think my nerves were more about changing career so dramatically rather than attending the Electrical courses. My experience at Able Skills has been brilliant and I am confident that this is the best decision I have made in years. Not only have I learned a considerable amount about being an Electrician, I have learned how to cope in a male dominated environment (I was the only woman in the class) and thanks to Able Skills other company called OnTime Services, I have learned about working in real life situations as I was given the opportunity to go out with qualified Electricians and work alongside them doing real installs and not just fetching and carrying and making the tea (although I did that as well). Some of the work I did has been assessed by their assessor Kevin and this will be evidence towards my NVQ. I just need to secure some more work in order to finish this but I have a few things lined up and am confident that I can achieve the NVQ before the Summer next year. Personally I can't thank Able Skills enough, they are busy and have a lot on and need to get through a lot in the time allocated but if you are a good and keen student which I am having committed my life savings into this, then you will get on. Everyone has time for you, the instructors are great and I have made some real friends from the guys that did the courses with me. My special thanks go to Richard, Paul, Alan and Jim and also to Steve the technician who made sure that everything run smoothly in the workshops lovely fella. Overall, thank you to everyone at Able Skills who helped and encouraged me to gain my Electrical Qualifications. My posting today is really to encourage women who want to go into construction to be brave and take that leap. I don't know if every training establishment is like Able Skills so if you can't find one where you feel comfortable, take my personal guarantee that Able Skills will look after you. read more

Having decided in 2009 to retrain, I looked around the internet at various training centres and chose Able Skills. I turned up unannounced one day, as invited to do so on their website, and met Gary, owner of Able Skills, who showed me round the subjects I had expressed interest in gaining skills in. I found him very helpful and he talked me through various courses, before leaving me me with a brochure and directions to their other site (which teaches carpentry, amongst other things) about 5 minutes away which I also wanted to visit. Both Gary and the instructors I spoke with were friendly and willing to spend time talking about the courses and the centre which they were clearly passionate about; they outlined the knowledge and skills I would gain without any pressure to sign up on the spot.I went away and a couple of days later decided to enrol on a City & Guilds level 2 plumbing studies course, followed by a week of short regulation courses, then gas training. As this was a course that had specific start dates, and that was just over 5 weeks in the future, I decided, since I was not working at the time, to fill that 5 weeks with a C & G multi-skill course, which gives you the basic skills (and a qualification) in 3 disciplines, I chose plastering, carpentry and bricklaying. When I arrived to begin my plastering module, we all went through the obligatory Health & Safety induction, then very swiftly moved on to practical tasks, straight in at the deep end, which is great as you don't want to spend too much time studying how to do something, you want to get stuck in. My instructor Brian clearly had a wealth of experience and was very patient with me as I had no prior experience and much of it was ending up on the floor! He and Spencer, the other highly-experienced plastering instructor who took over seamlessly when Brian unfortunately could not continue through ill health, both clearly found it very amusing that a lot of the muck was ending up on the floor and in my dreadlocks, but were very encouraging and persevered with me until by the end of the 3 weeks I was producing work which I would be happy to charge for, let alone pay for.Now able to render and to skim walls and ceilings, I moved on to carpentry, where there were 4 instructors, Bill, Paul, Blake and Mark. More H & S induction of course, all the instructors drill this into you as the centre is extremely safety oriented. I was able at any time to ask any of them for guidance and help and since they all taught the whole breadth of my course at various times, they were always able and willing to help; even though Mark was actually teaching kitchen-fitting to students in a different section of the workshop at the time, he still took the time to teach me how to correctly use a routing machine as he passed by me. I found it very useful that so many instructors were on hand as each had slightly different ways of doing things which led, I felt, to a greater insight.Simon took me next for bricklaying, more H & S relating to the hazards of working with these materials, and again, by the end of the first day, I had produced my first wall, and even had some photo evidence to prove it. Evidently highly skilled and experienced, and with a great sense of humour (although by the end I was sure I'd heard a couple of his jokes once or twice before!), by the end of the 2 weeks Simon (and Paul from carpentry, who was also an extremely competent bricklayer) had imparted the skills required for me to amass an impressive portfolio of evidence in what was a challenging and rewarding subject. For my plumbing course, my instructor was Toby. The class size was 16, which made it a little warm in the classroom when we covered the dozen or so chapters of theory (including, yes, health & safety) but in the workshop, the group was fairly spread out and settled down into various sub-groups of varying ability. I found Toby, and Jim, the other plumbing instructor, to be excellent teachers, and their knowledge and patience ensured that I, and a couple of others who struggled with one or two elements, got up to speed by the end of the 8 weeks. In fact, apart from three students who dropped out in the early stages for personal reasons, and another who clearly never put in any home study, everyone passed within the time allotted.Roy took me for the week of short courses (Unvented, Water Regs, Energy Efficiency, Solar Thermal) and the 3 weeks of gas training). Roy is clearly someone who has been there, seen it, done it, and had many anecdotes which illustrated why certain regulations are there and why things must be done a certain way. His unique manner of teaching kept us all interested during what was a very intensive four weeks of class-based theory and everybody passed with the required 100% mark. Ian, the other gas instructor, was also very helpful, and like all the instructors at Able Skills, could be borrowed for a short time if anyone had a question and Roy was with another read more

When i first signed up to take a series of courses level 2 2330 eletrical installation , level 3 2330 and the 7176 wire ring regulations i was very unsure of how well i would do, I'm dyslexic and have ADHD so i find it very hard to concentrate and struggle with maths and english. At school i only managed to pass two GCSE's and that was with extra lessons! But on commencing studies at Able skills i found Paul's (our instructor) unique and refreshing approach to teacheing a great help, happy to answer any questions we may have (even if it meant repeating him self in my case!), no matter how basic they may be. He really catered to our individual needs. Even in his lunch or morning tea break taking up his free time to help me and anyone else who may find elements of the course difficalt. The same can be said of all the staff at Able skills friendly and happy to help. Im happy to say after just 14 weeks I'm a full qualified electrician, having passed the exams you would undertake at any long term college courses. Put simply i would recommend Able skills to anyone who wants to start a career in the lucrative trade industry. Thanks again Able skills Harry Leadbeater read more

I am writing as i was one of the select few to take the new C&G2357 course with able skills i felt that i have learnt a tremendous amount within this 20 week course which i have felt has run smoothly throughout i would just like to congratulate my interlectual teacher Richard and say that all the team such as kevin steve and paul have been such a big help along the way. and a special shout out to angela who helped me organise payments and was lovely throughout. I'd just like to wish them all the best along the way thanks team, I had no reservations about training with them as they came across so helpful at first and they carried this through all the way to the end of my course. i would recommend these to anyone thinking about retraining or purhaps upgrading thanks again Carl. read more
