After 32 small-group sessions over eight weeks, she passed the 3rd-grade Oregon State reading test! As a parent, seeing that growth in such a short time meant more than I can put into words. She also learned to write her name and lowercase letters in cursive--something she was incredibly proud of. What makes Teacher Glenda special is that she doesn't just teach children how to read. She uses engaging nonfiction materials that build background knowledge and understanding. I watched my daughter grow not only as a reader and writer, but also in her knowledge of history and the world around her. On our very first day, I happened to know another family whose child was attending. Without any prompting, the father shared how much Glenda had helped their third grader. I am updating this review in response to the school owner's public reply…read more Our then 7-year-old child was accepted based on Activate's admissions criteria--the same criteria the school continues to publish today. We did not mistake Activate for a therapeutic school, nor did our child need one. He attends a general education classroom. The owner's response reinforces my original concern. Rather than recognizing overwhelm and dysregulation through the lens of neurodivergence, sensory processing, and nervous system regulation, he characterizes our child as having "behavioral challenges" and publicly suggests that my child required a therapeutic school while discussing our experience alongside children he describes as "violent, destructive, defiant, or runners." This response clearly illustrates the problem I am trying to point out. He pathologizes the neurodivergent children he claims to understand and serve. Our child became dysregulated in an environment that was not working for him. Instead of examining the environment, relationships, or adult response, the child was blamed. Regulation is foundational to learning. A neurodivergent child struggling to regulate in a learning environment does not automatically have a behavioral disorder or require a therapeutic placement. I did not write a review at the time because I did not yet have the language to describe what we had experienced. Now that I do, I believe it is important for families to have this information when considering placing their vulnerable children at this school. Some children can have wonderful experiences at Activate. The experience was traumatizing for our family. Both things can be true. Based on our experience and Greg's responses to my concerns--both when the situation happened and now--families should not expect reflection, accountability, or collaboration when things don't go as planned.

There is a sense of genuine interest in the children's progress. Many of the tutors there have been there long-term, and all of them I've seen there seem nice including the owner Noriko (not sure of the spelling). In addition to students primarily speaking English (of course), the needs of Japanese speaking students are met there, too. Kumon is a system, a process, and as such you may have similar results at any Kumon center. However, I can only speak for this location and I highly recommend it for its people. Regards, Neil
