Completely brown, all juice had left it and it was bit like eating hard brown sawdust. When I enquired whether it was standard practice to overcook the beef to this extent (as it is in Canada, where that is required by law) I was told it was corporate policy. I ate half and gave up as it was a pretty terrible experience. I will not grace their premises again. Perhaps other food is better but I suspect most of their proteins will similarly be ruined by their corporate policy. Waste of an hour of my life to drive over here. They were out of the first two bottles of wine we ordered (although they charged us the price of the wine we were going to order for the more expensive replacement) and they were out of one of the desserts we ordered. We usually had to wave down our servers and had to ask for water multiple times before getting some. This place only recently reopened so it deserves some slack, and hopefully it will improve. Regardless, the food is still darn good. Starters: -Prawn and avocado stack was absolutely delicious -Mushrooms on brioche were a bit salty but tasty -Baked Camambert was delightful, with various rolls and nice cranberry relish Mains & sides: -All the steaks were cooked perfectly and full of flavour -The duck was also really tasty, although a bit over-cooked -Butternut squash and onion rings were fantastic -Beans with onions and bacon were ok Dessert: -Banoffee pie was yummmmm -Eaton Mess had mixed reviews -Hot chocolate came with M&Ms and was nice

This has been one of the best pubs we've been to this far in Britain. Obviously due to its…read morelocation, you would only likely stop here if you are visiting nearby Highclere Castle (assuming you are an international visitor). There are several dining rooms, with a larger one in what appears to be an annex. They must have tour groups that come through as they were clear about out needing to finish before a certain hour (that was fine with us as our tickets to Highclere Castle were for entry within the hour). There were a number of items on the menu that looked good. It's basically all traditional British pub fare. Since it was Sunday, I think there was a special roast menu. I opted for the daily pie (chicken and ham) and my partner got the trio of roasted meats. Both came with vegetables and huge roasted potatoes. He also got what looked like a popover, which I later found out was Yorkshire pudding. Service was good! The place has a very friendly atmosphere. Looks like it is a place the locals come for a pint or for a bite to eat.

I have never been treated so rudely in my life. The place was nearly empty when I went for dinner. Despite that a young male server looked around the empty room, looked at me and then sat me in a hidden corner at a tiny table that was clearly not meant to be for customers. After about half an hour I eventually got up and asked a bartender if I could put an order in. She was confused because she had no idea I was there. She confronted the jerk that put me at that table for not telling her that he sat a customer, and for purposely putting me at a bad table for no reason. He started laughing and gloating that he could get away with what ever he wanted and that he didn't care about her feelings or his job at all before he walked away. She felt bad but still didn't do anything to improve the situation. I wonder if he is related to the owner because he clearly didn't want to work, or even be a good person. After all of this happened the service was still practically non existent and I still payed the full tab even though I was treated horribly. I will never go back here. Ambience: The pictures online look great but the reality looks run down and on the verge of a mold outbreak.

Forget the science-experiment food--this is just really good pub food that actually tastes like something you want to eat. It's not fancy in a stuffy way, just solid, well-done dishes across the board. Honestly, we didn't miss on a single thing. The drinks were a highlight too. I ordered the Hemingway and it came hidden inside a hollowed-out book, which sounds gimmicky but somehow totally worked and was actually fun. We almost skipped dessert, but ended up popping into the ice cream shop and I'm glad we did. Simple, high-quality, and exactly what hit the spot after a long meal. If you're in Bray and want a meal you'll genuinely enjoy eating, I'd skip the show across the road and come here instead. We also wandered upstairs to the lounge for a drink afterward--the old wood beams and leather chairs made it easy to stay longer than planned.
