This place is exactly what we imagined before we left for Ireland. Over 200 years old and great great great service. Brian the owner does a reception every evening for 30 minutes explaining the history of the hotel and the area around Clifton. Best lobster I ever had and lovely cooked to order breakfast. Dermott and Rico were superb servers !!!! They still use skeleton keys for the rooms. Book this hotel for multiple days and do yourself a favor !! Jim and Janeen Kirby McKinney Texas

Hotel in a lovely setting ontop of a hillside overlooking Clifden. Hotel was a historic home built in 1832 and operated as a for an orphanage for about 100 years before being purchased and restored by the local management team to make into a luxury hotel. It's an easy walk to the city center for nightlife and pubs. Loved the complimentary tea and scones at 4:30pm each day and the champagne at 6:30 with a little story. The breakfast daily was a full Irish buffet and very good The staff were wonderful and so is Froda the friendly African Gray parrot in the lobby. PS Laundry service available at a reasonable price of 12 Euros for a bag of clothes delivered back to your room. PSS they have reasonable priced Smaller rooms available on AirBnB which come with the same amenities but realize they are tiny functional rooms

Amazing! Simply amazing! The castle is quaint and lovely. The staff friendly and attentive ! The food exquisite ! The pear and blue cheese salad was light and refreshing! The fish of the day was a baked cod with a dill Bernaise sauce which was buttery and light with lovely dill flavor! Monika our waitress was so pleasant. The strawberry sponge cake was so light and filled with strawberries and Irish cream. Delightful with a cream anglaise and a butterscotch sauce to die for! Beautiful atmosphere with lovely live piano music! A real treat! Brian the owner a real lively character and entertainer! Best meal we've had in Ireland! Thank you

Great location in Cliffden. An old manor transformed into the hotel. Such professional service in the old fashioned way. Welcome tea and scones in the afternoon and a glass or two of Champagne and a history lesson in the evening.Dinner is discounted for guests and I enjoyed the Lobster Thermidor. Quaint four poster bed in a spacious room. Breakfast was superb with a terific selection from the continental buffet snd more than ample cooked variety breakfast.

I cannot put into words how WONDERFUL this place is. It was our favorite place we stayed in all of Ireland. The view from our room was amazing and overlooked the cute town below us. The staff are so sweet and make the experience tailored to you personally. For example, at the nightly dinner provided (which was delicious!), they take the time to put a little mini flag on your table from whatever country you're visiting from. There is also live music every night by a man who has the voice of an Elton John angel. Located in the small town of Clifden (County Connemara) this place is a MUST when traveling up the west coast of Ireland.

We booked through Authentic Ireland, so we are on a tour around Ireland. We love the antic style, it really adds to the experience. Brian is an amazing host, food is amazing, the town is beautiful. I highly recommend this castle to anyone!

Staying at Abbeyglen Castle Hotel was a true treat, and the highlight of our trip to Ireland. The entire staff was professional, friendly and helpful. The views are beautiful, the extra amenities unexpected and gracious, and the town surrounding the castle is the perfect place to grab lunch, coffee or go out for great music. We loved every moment of our stay, from the beautiful and delicious breakfast, to the riveting history of the castle's development, and the late night piano playing in the lounge by the hotel owner. If you have a chance to hike or drive Sky Road, definitely do it! The view is only secondary to the Cliffs of Moher, and worth the time. We will never forget our stay, and we look forward to returning in several years for an anniversary celebration of our honeymoon.

Built in 1832 the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel is situated on the scenic Sky Road in Connemara less than a five minute walk to the town of Clifden. It is perfectly situated as a great base to explore Connemara and take a trip into Galway city. The grounds of the castle are lovely and have tennis courts, fountains, a lovely patio area with tables and chairs, walking trails, a mini golf / pitch and put course as well as a helipad, should you decided to leave the car and take the chopper. The castle is ivy clad with big wooden doors, everything you would expect from a castle. Inside is full of charm and authentic touches, dark wooden panelling, elaborate art-work on the walls, lush plush decorative carpets, thrones, dark leather armchairs and sofas as well as huge chandeliers and real turf burning fires throughout the public areas. As you enter the castle you are greeted with one of these real fires and by Gilbert, an African Grey parrot that hangs out by the reception area and chats to guests and whistles at the ladies. He is a very charming parrot, almost as charming as all the staff who are so welcoming, helpful and funny, full of Irish wit and humour. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they will be the highlight of your stay. Downstairs is the lobby area with fires and sofas, the library with books, games, more fires and comfy sofas and the bar which also has a turf burning fire, lots of cosy seats and tables and a grand piano smack bang in the middle. There is also another room with a big screen tv, pool table, card table and another piano. This room is a good size and great for functions and watching sporting events with guests. There is also a wall of fame which is adorned with framed photos of the many famous people who have stayed in the castle throughout the years. There are triple bedrooms with a double / twin bed and a single bed on the first floor. The second floor is where you will find a conference room with computers and large desk and the fabulous restaurant where buffet breakfast and dinner is served. There is also a very cool smoking area with big screen tv, outdoor heaters, and a fish tank! You will find lots of these quirky things throughout the hotel. I stayed in two rooms on the second floor, one with two single beds pushed together to make a double bed and one with a full sized double bed, although it may have been a king sized bed it was so big but I am not too sure. The rooms at the back face out on to some secluded greenery area and the rooms at the front look out over a stream and offer views of Clifden. There are many different types of room on offer including ones with canopy four poster beds, ones with a separate living are, rooms are available in the turret of the castle, loads have claw foot baths, and one has a double jacuzzi. I had the pleasure of been shown around each type of room and I can say that they are all striking and inviting and look fabulous. The rooms I stayed in had the following: double / twin beds with lots of pillows and lovely crisp sheets, extra bedding in the wardrobes. They had two beautiful antique chairs and table as well as two bedside tables with a lamp on each one. Each room have a big screen tv and dvd player, kettle, teapot and tea and coffee and milk and sugar. There was a huge desk with mirror and chair great for writing and setting up a laptop. There was a great hairdryer in the desk and there was an iron, ironing board, trouser press as well as a safe and a big wardrobe with plenty of hangers and shelves. There was also two full length mirrors in each of the rooms I stayed in. They offer a laundry service too and the bags are in the room. There was a nice long bath, although not very wide, and a good shower above the bath. The sinks were nice and big and there was a huge mirrored wall with shelf space for all your cosmetics. Shaving plugs are also on the wall as well as a magnifying mirror. There were lots of towels and a shower cap, soap, shower gel, shampoo and drinking glasses. There were lots of lights in the room and a lot of natural light due to the big windows, however the curtains were big and heavy enough to block out all the light and making the room nice and dark at night time. The rooms where I was were very quiet and I only heard other guests going in and out of their rooms in the morning, but I am a light sleeper so I usually hear this in hotels. The beds in the rooms I was in were a little on the hard side but as I have a bad back this was perfect for me. I found my room and especially bathroom to be very clean and my room was cleaned every day of my stay. The whole hotel was very clean if a little shabby but shabby in a very chic kind of way, this is a castle that is nearly 200 years old. However many of the rooms have just been refurbished including new showers and carpets and whilst I was there more working was being carried out on the carpets in the public areas.

The Abbeyglen Castle Hotel is a complete treasure & one is made to feel like royalty as soon as you step in the front door. It is beyond beautiful here. The staff from the front desk to the owners Paul & Brian Hughes are very present & very sociable. Ensuring that every aspect of our stay exceeded the last half hour. Complimentary Champagne on arrival with warm open fires and traditional Irish music playing in the background. Complimentary afternoon tea & scones and a view to die for. This castle is magnificent and boutique like in nature. It has free wifi, Two helicopter pads, excellent outdoor covered smoking facilities & an excellent restaurant with top notch food along with a wide & varied buffet style breakfast with everything you could imagine on the menu. The bar at night is full of people sitting listening to traditional Irish music and ballads. Performed no less by the owner Brian. By the way, this man knows your name as soon as he meets you and does not forget it. They have a residential parrot in the foyer who talks!! Our stay was unbelievable and we will absolutely return here to this gem in the heart of Connemara.

This is one of the most chill places I've ever had the privilege of staying. The rooms are small but incredibly comfortable despite the dodgy plumbing. We booked in for three nights on a bed, breakfast and dinner package with 3 other couples on the bank holiday weekend in June. We had a blast. The food is magnificent. The breakfast alone sets the tome for the day and dinner is a delight. Nothing fancy. Just good wholesome food, beautifully presented and with well drilled and attentive staff. Relax at any time during the day in several day rooms with coffee or booze more or less on tap. Live music at night in the bar after dinner leading to a sing song ranging from Irish ballads to ABBA ensure a relaxing, no hassle weekend. During the day, there is so much to see and do in the beautiful Connemara countryside within easy striking distance of the hotel. Must see tourist destinations such as Kylemore Abbey and chic food trucks such as The Misunderstood Heron in nearby Letterfrack have to be experienced. Experience also the grounds in the immediate vicinity for a bracing walk in the afternoon or even a dip in the sea right next to the hotel. For the less adventurous, the hotel, has a heated outdoor swimming pool as well. Given that it was an all-in package it was incredibly good value in my opinion. Highly recommended. Will definitely return. It's a minimum 4.5 hour drive from Dublin so need at least 3 nights to get the full chillax experience.

Following a one night stay which was paid in full on check out, they put a hold of an additional €280 on my visa card the day AFTER we paid, and 8 days later I still have no access to my €280!!! I booked the Alcock & Brown hotel on the 13th of May for myself and 13 others. Each room was to be booked individually as this was not a group booking. I reserved a room for my husband and me and also for my friend and her husband, on my visa debit card. When reserving the rooms (over the phone) I specifically asked that my card not be used for these rooms unless we did not show (or cancelled outside of the cancellation terms) as we would be paying by a different card as would the other couple. I was explicitly told by the hotel that as long as both rooms were paid for either on check in or check out that there would be no action on my card. We arrived on Saturday the 14th of June, the other couple paid for their room at check in on their credit card and we paid for our room on check out on my husband's credit card. However, when I checked my bank account on the Monday, 16th of June, there was an outstanding charge of €280 (the cost of the two rooms) on my visa card. I contacted the hotel immediately to enquire why they had charged my card when both rooms had been paid for before we left. I was told that my card had not been charged, but a hold had been put on my card for the total of the two rooms on Friday the 13th of June as a precautionary measure, and would be released in 3-5 days! And that this was common practice for most hotels. I have never before come across this, with any hotel. I could understand if we did not show up on the day taking the payment from my card, but not putting a hold on the money the day before we were due to arrive, especially not having told me that this would be done, and having told me that my card would not be used if payment was made in full by check out. The hotel told me they would try to put the transaction at €0.00 to clear the hold, they called back to say that this didn't work and would put through a transaction of €0.01 to try and clear the hold. However, they did not contact me to say that this didn't work, and the following day when my direct debits went through, my account went into debit, and one of my bills was almost not paid. This was very embarrassing for me, and I contacted the hotel. I spoke to a French man on reception, who could not have been nicer and was extremely helpful and apologetic. He took my details and was to contact Declan (I think he is the manager), who I had dealt with originally, and ask him to call me immediately. When I still hadn't received a call by lunch time the next day, I rang again, and this time spoke to a lady at reception. I had to go through everything again with her, as Declan wasn't there again. She was very nonchalant, repeatedly telling me that this was common practice with hotels and that I will just have to wait for the hold to be released. I explained that I was not happy with this and would like to speak to Declan. She reluctantly took my details and told me that she would call Declan, but didn't know if she would get through as signal in Clifden area is bad. A while later, the same lady from reception called me back, to say they were sorry about the inconvenience, but kept insisting that as they hadn't taken the money out of my account and only put a hold on the amount that it was all perfectly fine as the money was still there, either way I do not have access to these funds. She bordered on very rude, and told me that Declan would not be contacting me, as there is nothing that they can do and I would have to contact my bank and sort it out myself. It is now Monday the 23rd, 11 days since Alcock and Brown Hotel put a hold on €280 on my visa card, and I still have no access to this money. Another direct debit came out today, I'm not sure if it has gone through yet as there was not enough money in my account. My account has gone into debit, for the second time in a week, and I will also be charged for both of these. I have had to ring the hotel 3 times, I have a minimum of two charges on my account for going into debit and I have had to call my bank, another cost. My bank informed me that Alcock and Brown put a pre-authorisation hold on my card for the €280 on Monday the 16th of June, the day After the room fees were paid!! The pre-authorisation hold lasts 10 working days, which means I will not have access to my €280 until the end of this week. The entire situation is a disgrace. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
