I have a fondness for Abbey Park even though I don't get to go very often. My parents used to take me here alot when we were kids. Abbey Park is a mostly walled park first opened to the public in 1882. The river Soar flows through the park and is full of life - ducks, swans etc. The ruins of Cavendish House can be seen which burnt down in the 1600s. Activities for families - so much space for games, football, cricket etc. There is a large play area for kids of all ages which includes a large paddling pool(which was dry last time I went). There is a small gauge railway there and you can have a ride on the back of one for not much money. There is also a small petting zoo including rabbits, goats and an aviary. Abbey Park has very extensive grounds and you can spend a good deal time here whatever the weather. It's close to the city centre and also B&Q Depot and an ideal place to swing into for a quick trip or a long afternoon walk. There are two car parks as I remember- one is free and one is a council run and therefore expensive money-making pay and display. read more

Abbey Park is our favourite park in Leicester city. It has lots of paved paths so is great for little cyclists and skaters, and a wide range of planted areas and flowers. It is a very pretty park to walk through. In addition, there is the river flowing through with a little waterfall and plenty of ducks and swans to feed. There is a pets corner with goats, rabbits, birds etc etc. You can't actually pet them but you can feed them and it is a very nice picnic area too. A good childrens play area now for all ages, since the opening of new equipment earlier this year. There is a variety of slides and swings, a small climbing wall, football area and sandpit (looks a bit grungy but we've never found anything in there - it is just fallen and broken up leaves) The cafe in the middle looks nice and is Ok, but far naffer than it need be. It could be exceptionally lovely overlooking the river and grounds, but is like a slightly cruddy transport cafe with gruff and rough staff and dodgy looking food! Stick to hot drinks, ice creams and you'll be fine :-) There are often people playing cricket which is lovely to watch and we've been to lots of lovely events there which are worth going to. The variety of gardens are a real joy to see. On Sunday afternoons there is also a miniature steam train for your little Thomas fans to have a go on, for a small fee. You do have to pay for parking, though there is quite a lot on the street too which is free if you can find a space. Great Park in the city centre, really worth a visit. read more

Abbey Park is located right at the back of the Leicester College campus of the same time. I love this as I never really get to go to the park a lot but now it's literally right next door so I often have lunch there with my friends. The park was first opened in 1882 and is owned by the Leicester City Council. Divided by the River Soar the park contains ruins of the twelfth century Leicester Abbey and a sevententh century mansion as well as a gorgeous selection of trees and lakes. The whole park has a very Victorian feel to it and you could wander round for hours just admiring all the history that leaps from the park at every interval. There's also a few play parks for the children and a pets corner which is always nice to take young children to. There is also the Friendship Origin which houses some pretty interesting plants most of which have a Chinese origin. The model railway and boat club are also great attractions for a day out and the park regulary has a fun fair on its grounds and various celebrations for events like Bonfire Night or Divali. It's definately the heart of Leicester and full of enriching and beautiful activites for all to get involved in and is so refreshing to visit and feel like just for a little while that you are lost from the city. I have never had any bad experiences here at all though the park is prone to litter and the odd spout of vandalism. read more

Very nice park for kids and adults, peaceful and good variety of things to see within the park. Lot of paved paths, water, small bridges, greenery, etc. Various festivals held here. A good spot for photo shoots, if you can manage to find a sunny day of the year in this region :) read more

Great park near the city. Secluded and walled off so you feel that you are out in the countryside. They also hold bonfire night every year. Parking may be a problem, I don;t know if they have parking included in the walls. Near the city centre. Walkable, but would recommend driving there and parking in the nearby b&q. read more

As the name suggests, the park was once Abbey grounds, and the walls of the old Abbey are still there now, as is, apparently the grave of Cardinal Wolsey, who died here on the way to his trial at the start of Henry VIIIs reformation. Now, alongside the Abbey ruins, there is lots of open space, areas to feed the ducks on the river, a boating lake, a pet's corner, large play area, bandstand, chinese, sensory and traditional gardens, model railway which runs occasionally, and a cafe. It is such a large park that even on its busiest days, you can usually still find a quiet corner. There is parking, and access is generally good for wheelchairs/buggies. read more

my 3 year old loves abbey park for the middle of a city it is a great space its walking distance from the centre of town. lots of green lovely grass a large lake with lots of ducks and geese, that do love being fed. there is a lovely play park and a animal corner with rabbits, small birds and much more. the park is reaping in history of corse there was a abbey there. in the middle of the park a river runs through and there is a lovely cafe, even your dog can go in. many events are held here the fun fair bonfire displays mini marathons the model boat club meet there so much to do a great outdoor sopace i could go on but a visit is worth it. read more

I love Abbey Park, been coming here for years. Thre is much to do and see, there is a small japanese garden a model railway and paddle boats, so plenty to keep the kids occupied during the summer holidays. I like to walk my dogs around too, quite dog friendly and plenty of doogie bins, which on majority people use, which is good. read more

Awseome park. Its as good as they get. I have just one gripe - and Ill mention that now to get rid of it. The car parking charges and bordering on the ridiculous. Anyway the park. It has 2 main entrances, and both clearly state the time the park closes. I normally enter from the left where the halfords is, and take my children to the climbing frame area which includes slides, swings and those tyre things they love to lie on whey you push them. From there a walk past the water towards a very large ice cream cafe area, a stroll through a remarkably well kept garden area and then finally a walk round the water (which includes pedaloes for the family. The trains which the children like to sit on are great fun although werent working when I went the other day. Abbey Park has so much to do even after three years in Leicester I'm still stumbling upon it many hidden treasures while on lovely walks with my doggie. For example recently I found they had a petting zoo with rabbit and goats and being a country girl from birth its nice to have you own little heaven of green wonder and animals. Other worth mentioning treats is the small Japanese Garden, Model railway; boating lake with paddleboat and it's the place to go to for the funfair and firework nights. If all that excitement is too much stop of in the Abbey Park Café for drinks and lovely ice creams. read more

Abbey Park is beautiful. Recently a very close friend of mine had their wedding photos taken here and it was lovely. There are tennis courts, cricket pitches, pathways and a lake where people can hire peddle boats and have a good time boating around. The grass is always cut and well looked after. The park itself is large and there is a bridge separating the two halfs of the park. A river passes through the park and it is a beautiful scene. They hold a lot of events too and a lot of people gather round. I usually come with my friends to play football. There is ample space to play and the grass is always nicely cut. read more

Great petting zoo!!

This is a great park, I've been there thousands of times, through my childhood and adulthood! A good place if you do not want a long tiring drive, it's in the centre of the city and is pretty big. In summer the atmosphere is great, there is also a cricket pitch which is excellent. only down factor is that there is a parking fee of couple of pounds. Besides that a wonderful day out. read more
